What ?? Did you people never read about the socialist propagand machine? It is very much alive and well living in the left wing media such as Newsweek and the white house. You shall all one day very soon look around and wonder how and when you lost you freedom. Shame on you who forget what thousands have died for. Please - step over the border and force your simple minded solcialist elsewhere.

hey old fart, which civil liberties are those we already lost? (I am not sure what a civil liberty is). I must say Bush did know how to kick ass but how after 9-11 how he didn???t clamp down our southern border is beyond me. Also, he was not very conservative in his domestic polices. Spent way too much and the weak republicans allowed him to do so. Shame on them and that is why they are out of congress. But on the flip side, these Dems make the past repubs look like penny pinchers.

Michael Steele: "I'm trying to Move an Elephant Covered in its own Muck"

That Sounds like a Perfect Description of Both Rush Limbaugh's Fat Decadent A! and the State of the Republican Party, to me.

This is why it is over for the GOP. the far left democratss formed their own parties (socialist - communist or what ever fantasy you want to believe). Unfortunately... the GOP got taken over by folks who couldn't muster any quorum among their ignorant notions of economics and patriotism and thats what you got now. Economic and moral fascism led by fat drug addicted amoral slobs or elli mae and jethros christian bullies. in a few short words YOU BLEW IT! 9 years with 2/3 of the power and even 4 years with 3/3 of the power and what is your legacy? the good fairy of free enterprise will fix everything. It didn't work for Reagans voodoo economics and it really failed when you got complete control. So... Rush and the real fools ought to form their own party or come out of the Libertarian closet (another fringe lunatic group kin to Communism in the other extreme direction -- one ignorant dupe is as good as the other) or move on.
Maybe nobody noticed it... but McCain beat all the firebreathing foolish ignoramuses of the Liimbaugh circus and did it quickly. I think it was because those left in the middle (which is the left center now) of the GOP had enough. Too bad he turned around a picked another Limbaugh circus member and Rove darling.
We don't want them any more in the Party... don't you get it. But go ahead and run them,,, we have all seen through the hypocrisy of everyone and Mr Frum... take the advice I would give McCain "if you want to save any sense of decency as a human, you will abandon this party like so many of us have and join the democrats... then you won't have to be embarrassed over and over by your so called "base" which is no base at all... it is just the usual percentage of fools in every society and they haven't had power since the last group like these got hold of the German nation in the 1930's.
Rush Hannity O Really and the rest are just the Joe Campbells and Lindbergs of supercilious voluptuaries of those other times. They can only point fingers as they have no other substance.
Rest In Peace... your party was only saved by Democrat turned republican in 1940 and the only reason you weren't dead in the water after the America First years is those pesky reds played into your paranoia.
When you are a Republican, as I was... you can truly wear a t shirt that says "I'm with Stupid". But not anymore... anything is better than what you guys did when you had the chance... which was nothing.

nothing wrong with rush nothing wrong with the republican party. they are right on politics, right on business and right on america. speak on rush. tell us what's happening in this god forsaken country. shake that liberal cage until those frightened little cowards wet their pants.

Seldom have I read something written by someone with whom I disagree on so many issues, that has made me think so hard. I believe this gentleman has the good of the country at heart. I will continue to seek out his thinking... I am a liberal; but this writer reached me today.

  • Posted By: NAXISMOBILE @ 03/07/2009 8:30:53 PM

Frum, you are nothing more than a scumbag liberal socialist. You might as well move to china and joint your communist friends.
You are nothing more than another one of Obama's democrat goons trying to cover up the damage he and Pelosi are doing to generations not yet born. Rush is right and you are wrong; the presidency is a stewardship not a dictatorship.
Obama in one month has signed off on a bill that spends more money than anyone has in the history of the world and all you can do is try to blame Rush since you can't blame Bush anymore. You sir are truly a pathetic piece of work that deserves to be put in his place.

My my, Frum liberal scum? How far does the lunatic-right-fringe go? I'm afraid John Birch and Megellan together couldn't find you on the map.

    • Posted By: chris s. @ 03/07/2009 9:56:22 PM

In just a few weeks, it has already become Obama's fault. The last eight years, really? Let's blame Clinton, while we're at it.

  • Posted By: ikie12pts @ 03/07/2009 9:58:10 PM

The Republican party is down to Rush...spouting and spitting his venom and Ms. Palin, who doesn't know that Africa is a continent. All of this is good news to me. I love it. If the party goes with either, it will be destroyed.

  • Posted By: buckeyeduffer @ 03/07/2009 9:57:00 PM

I cannot agree more. I am ready to pull the plug on the GOP after 50 + years of voting a straight GOP ticket. This incendiary loud mouth is only looking out for his own welfare, (read ratings and salary) and has likely extended the terms of the current liberal leadership more than any other single event. What a shame. I have kept my kids allegiance Republican to date, but unless the GOP shuts Limbaugh and Savage down I am done defending the party.

  • Posted By: overskill @ 03/07/2009 9:56:39 PM

Your writing is very good David. I really enjoyed your book on the 70's. I think it would be a good idea to downplay your '08 support of Giuliani. I couldn't believe Giuliani in the South Carolina debates when he exclaimed that he had never heard of the concept that 9-11 may have been caused in essence by blowback. I think supporting someone who was that divorced from reality, out of touch with mainstream thought or internet chatter really diminishes your credibility and judgment. As most Canadians, I hope Obama succeeds but I listen occasionally to Rush, more like a Belichek watches Jets game films to check out the opposition. Usually within a few minutes, I find Rush unlistenable and a caricature for the type of American the rest of the world finds insufferable. His three hour daily info-mercial gets stale very quickly as well as his incessant distainful branding of any divergent thought.

Well first of all never confuse rupublicans with conservatives our fiscal calamity is proof in the pudding!!!
Republicans are very liberal about giving our money away to other countries that may follow our ideology (but it never works out that way)..... republicans hate the idea of spending a penny on Americans!!! Republicans are anti- American!!!!! Democrats are conservative when it comes to giving bribery money to militant countries that may fall in line with our ideas (republican ideas) but they are called liberal because they want to better the lives of Americans!!!
Limbaugh is Adolf Hitler with a bunch of stupid nazi's (Republicans) going along with his bs....

At this point Rush is a toxic asset to the right. He is leading the republicans over a cliff and that's fine with me.

  • Posted By: Soonerkev @ 03/07/2009 9:52:24 PM

Obama's first payment went out to those fine brown shirts known as ACORN. Their energetic gansta' style of politics will get him reelected. He has already promised over 51% of the voters a chunk of the treasury. There won't be money for second go -round.

  • Posted By: blarsen @ 03/07/2009 9:50:13 PM

Rush is the rights most toxic asset. He makes the democrat's job a lot easier. As long as Rush keeps talking, the left will keep winning elections.

  • Posted By: RecycledSip @ 03/07/2009 9:49:29 PM

The 2010 and 2012 elections will not be about Rush Limbaugh: They will be a referendum on whether the policies enacted by Barack Obama and the Pelosi-Reid Congress have made the lives of individual Americans better or worse. All of this talk about Limbaugh is a red herring, used by Democrats to try to distract people from the horrible economy and the things that Obama has done so far to make things worse. It seems to be working, at least among the MSM.

  • Posted By: burns82 @ 03/07/2009 9:48:53 PM

Mr. Frum, I am sorry that at the beginning of this article you felt the need to tiptoe around what a complete disaster this guy and his followers are for the party. You got it right at the end though. Reagan, Buckley and dare I say Nixon wouldn't be caught dead with this loudmouth miscreant in public. There's a reason he is a radio talkshow host that doesn't actually have to DO anything and not a leader or an executive--he would never get the opportunity. I guess that's great for him since the money's better in hate radio than leadership or industry.

  • Posted By: nmrabbit @ 03/07/2009 9:21:35 PM

Dear David, How many times did Newsweek have Obama on the front cover compared to McCain? Like you said, Rush is a Radio Personality --But not the leader of the GOP. Several times you left out the previous sentence to claim your point. Now, I don't like Rush. Newt is a master polititian and a very good teacher of economics. President -Blah!
But, you mark this down. 1917 Marxs, 1932 Hitler, 1960 Castro, 1999.Chavez. 2009 Obama. Do a study on mass hypnotizm. All of these used it. Every economist from high school to PHD will tell you ---you can nnot spent tax dollars to get out of a reccession. No one in history back through the days of Rome has a country succeeded at it. It is pure socialism. I have voted as Independant --for the canidate since 1957 in every city, county, state and federal election that was available to me. Some Demo some GOP. Quit bashin the crowd and go after the players.--IE--Congress-President.
Obama has broken every promise he made to us voters. Who is going to pay the taxes for all this money? The rich! Ha! Ha! No lobbist on the Govn. Payroll Ha!. Ha! No earmark! Ha! Ha! Payoff Big donors! OH Yes! He will go down in history as The Great Illusionist!

    • Posted By: swestcopy @ 03/07/2009 9:29:29 PM

Obama the equivalent of Marx, Hitler, Castro? Exactly the extreme, over the top venom that Frum is decrying. Good luck in the next election with that line :)

This is a good start. Thanks to David Frum for taking on Rush Limbaugh. That's more than the so-called leaders of the Republican Party has done. But Rush is not the only problem for the Republicans.

For years and years, the Republicans have used fear and demonizing to win elections. They have offered up nothing to enhance the lives of regular Americans, except for the rich.

Their rhetoric is ugly and is hard to stomach. I came to this country as an immigrant more than two decades ago. I believed in a lot of what the Republicans purport to be their core values, but they never practiced. I believed in hard work, and education. Growing up in my native Liberia, my father, a self-taught man stressed education for all of us his children, and we all aspired to be the best. It was the same for a large number of families in our tiny nation. And so, in many respects, we believed in what the Republicans preached.

But when it came down to living those values, it is all rhetoric, in my view. Republicans who preached family values, have had several marriages and divorces. Yet, they rail against gay people, who just want to live their lives and be left alone.

In their ranks, hypocrisy ruled the day. While many preached against gays and voted against any rights for gay people, some were closeted gays, while you saw some of their children coming out of the closet. Newt Gingrich's sister is gay. Dick Cheney's daughter is gay. Phyllis Schaffley's son is gay. And there are so many more.

Then they preach against abstinence. The governor who preached the loudest did not even know her daughter was doing anything but. To her credit the young girl has debunked the idea.

Republicans want to blame immigrants or minorities for the problems that ails this country, and they do it with such mean-spiritedness.

Since president Barack Obama announced his candidacy, we've seen some of the vilest and ugliest words used to describe him, some coming from elected leaders.

So you see, the problems the Republican face today, Mr. Frum, is much more than Rush. He and Hannity, Levin, O'Rielly and the others use their platform to push the fearmongering. But for them the bottom line is their bottom line, lining their pockets.

Maybe it will be left to people like you, Douhat and Andrew Sullivan to fight for the soul of your party. Today may be a good starting point. Good luck.

Frum has made a well-reasoned argument--within the confines of his Conservative agenda. That agenda he believes is right for America. I must loudly disagree. I bet, so will so many other Americans. Until Conservatives recognize the full reality of the shift in paradigm in America that led to Obama's election, they will not get far in opposing him but will for a much longer period be consigned in the political wilderness. David Frum forgot one important part of his biography--that while in Canada he belonged to a white supremacist party that was opposed to many human rights concerns of ordinary citizens, especially minorities. Finally, Frum makes the outrageous claim that Conservatives were always right. Need I say more other that to point to the current economic crisis as a sterling example of the failure of Conservative prescription for our society. Even Reaganomics failed woefully: Reagan left behind a huge deficit. Democrats almost always come to power to mend the tattered economy Republican administrations leave behind.
