How much did you get paid to write what we, the people, knew was coming anyway. Republicans , Democrats. Independents and those of The Social Reform Ticket all share in the blame for the collapse of our economic system and basically our way of life., The land of the plenty; of opportunity for all; of freedom for every man , woman and child; free speech; and capitalism has changed already. We have laws in place and agencys that watch and regulate how things are done, but with outdated views and expectations. The people of this c ountry have become so cynical, mean spirited and greedy that fairness has been taken out of the equation that adds up to healthy capitalism. It is not supprising that they don't want to change. Yeh! Some of them pulled for Obama, but they secretly thought that he would stay in the safe lane, the middle lane. We, the people, need to stay focused and remain patient. We know that it will take one or two years to see any progress. The President needs to stay the course and remain the captain of the peoples' ship. We can vote some of the ones out, who want to play politics above the country's healthin 2010. President Obama needs to keep reaching out to all elected parties and he needs to remain flexiiblle, but firm. We, who don't have a million dollar nest egg put away, need to realize that we are all going to have to give up some things now in order to maintain some of the things needed like Social Security, Affordable Health Care, Quality Education for our children and An Increasing Job Market. We, the people, need to stay informed and bring your ideas to the table. Just because we were not elected to an office, does not mean that we do not have great solutions to offer our President, that can make a positive impact in our circumstanses.

No one filling the job of President after Bush/Chaney can possibly win in the Washington DC Pit of nonsense governing. Obama has taken steps but as Ron Paul says 'It will work itself out, there is no quick fix'. Right now we need to pick up the Spirit and hold the criticism to a minimum. To quote Ben Stein 'Velocity of money exchange will improve when the population THINKS things are turning around'. Let's go there now.

As a small AMERICAN business owner I am scared to death. We've been in business for 5 years without a layoff until a few months ago, now we're at about half the employees we use to have. I think we need to spend some resources figuring out how to help build business IN America and put people here back to work. Spending the stimulus funds on low income programs, health insurance, unemployment benefits and other such areas is important - but if you find a way to keep people employed, wouln't this decrease the need for so much funding in these other areas?

I wish people would stop trying to turn Obama into the next "Black Messiah." I don't judge anyone by their color, I judge them by their actions. To date, Barack Obama has (a) seriously hurt the economy of Nevada by taking pot shots at Las Vegas. (b) extended the Futa Rate that was set to be reduced to .06 in 2009. What this means is your employers now are paying higher payroll taxes, Who do you think will pay the price for that. (c) Wants to open negotiations with Muslim Terrorists Groups. Although, I applaud President Obama's sincerity, the fact is, he is too inexperienced in International politics and these groups are too unstable for that kind of response. (d) in a secret letter to the Russian Government was willing to lower our military shields for concessions regarding Iran. (e) is instituting earmark spending policies that our grandchildren will be paying for. President Obama plans to spend money that isn't even earned yet. What kind of responsible accountability is that? All of this in less than 100 days in office. Many of you decry the last eight years of President Bush and his 400 billion deficit. Let's see how you feel about paying over a Trillion Dollars in Deficit that President Obama is projecting.

The Pres is not going to be able to fix this mess anytime soon and to think otherwise is absurd

    1. We know that the economy is bad... but the President and the media don???t need to continue with the same ole wow is me the sky is falling crap. People who are scared spend less money. FACT! Our economy only functions properly when people have jobs and are spending money. FACT!

    2. Let touch quickly on the Obama inherited this deficit bandwagon. The DEM have been the majority since Jan of 08... Hello!! Now I'm neither a REP nor a DEM, but I can???t stand to hear people regurgitate what they've heard. The war that we shouldn???t have been in and the bad lending policies that the banks were conducting are what got us in this mess people. PERIOD!

    3. Let the Union Driven auto dealers, banks with a bad history of policies, insurance companies with a bad history of policies and everyone else who got us in this mess Crash and Burn. How about using all that money to help out the next generation of companies to get a good start and make sure they are structured properly... this will be trillions cheaper for our grandkids. I really can???t believe that the government is still giving money to the same guys that got us in this mess. At least cap all of their freakin corporate salaries at 100K...and tax the crap out of them... PLEASE!!!!

    4. Before Obama was elected, I saw that he was reading a book call "The Post-American World". That is really starting to scare the crap out of me now. Is the goal to spend all of our grandkids tax money, SS money, savings and screw up the American credit line before they even have a chance to grow up and have jobs??? What!? Are we really going to be a nation who answers to Chinese tycoons?? How long until the dollar is worth a peso?? At this rate of borrowing Chinese money and spending it on BS, maybe 10 years!! Seriously People!!!

    5. I pray that we don???t totally remove God from our country... that will probably be the last draw. We as Americans who are "One Nation Under GOD" need to remember the steps that were taken by our grandfathers and GGGGrandfathers to ensure "Freedom and the pursuit of happiness". Lets step back and remember what really got us here in the first place... and I'm not talking about the financial crisis that were in now, I'm talking about what made America the greatest nation in the world. Thinks about it people.

I think everyone should let the President do his job. Bush had it for 8 years and look at the mess its gonna take time to clear it up. I think he has a fresh new outlook and Ideas so quit complaining and let him work.

    • Posted By: rick1958 @ 03/10/2009 7:31:49 PM

This man don't have a clue about what to do. No we won't get instant fixes but if we have eiight years of Obama there won't be anything left of America.

Who cares!!! All politicians are crooks and never have the interest of the middle or lower class in mind. These are the majority footin the bills and payin their outrages salaries. Everything has become so inflated it's nuts! No one person in politics is willing to stand up and do the right thing because the may loosing the backing of "someone important".

I think we should pray for the president. After all if he looses don't we also!!!!!!!

Obama dropped the ball, and lost all his credibility with me, when he stood by and watched Pelosi and Reid cram the "Stimulus" Bill down the throats of Americans. I have never heard of a legislative body being forced to vote on a Bill that no one had the opportunity to read Such blind obedience is becoming the Hallmark of the Democratic Party. Obama would have deserved the bogus popularity allegedly shown by a majority of Americans, if he had taken his now infamous scapel and trimmed the fat from the Stimulus Bill and the new 410 billion budget which contains over nine thousand earmarks. The American people can be duped, but they do not remained duped for long. Soon, Obama's popularity will wither and he will be seen for the farce that he is.

Where have you been for the past ten years? What about the Patriot Act? It was crammed down our throats (as you say) without anyone reading or regarding its contents. I think President Bush did the same exact thing when he asked Congress 'to pass this important peice of legislation' and ask Congress to not even read it. Unfortunetly, it contained many blatent attempts to decrease citizens rights (esp. when you look at roaving wire taps and release of records). This is the same thing that has been going on for years; government fatcats lining their pockets, pork barrell spending, and a total disregard for the American People.
"We have frequently printed the word Democracy, yet I cannot too often repeat that it is a word the real gist of which still sleeps, quite unawakened, notwithstanding the resonance and the many angry tempests out of which its syllables have come, from pen or tongue. It is a great word, whose history, I suppose, remains unwritten, because that history has yet to be enacted." (Walt Whitman, Democratic Vistas, 1871).

Is Obama becoming the Ryan Leaf of politics? A great, talented guy, used to only praise, who chokes facing criticism and the big leagues at the same time?

  • Posted By: JakeJohnson (future President) @ 03/10/2009 7:31:19 PM

Funny thing is, you Democrats who refuse to look at facts and go with you gut feeling instead think "W" and all the Republicans in Congress are to blame for this debt.. WRONG! It's actually the people who signed the Equal Housing Bill (Proposed and signed by Democrats). This can go back to the Clinton years when the Republicans actually WARNED the Dems this would happen.

I agree that most Americans believe President Obama is doing a great job. Unfortunately, who is fair to judge that he is not doing a great job? Everything he does is and will be criitcized and that is sad. I respect that President Obama made it very clear concerning the state of our current economy and the plans he has to get us out. One fact is certain and that is it will take time for things to get better. Let's give him our full support and as Americans do our part because no man can change "this mess" by himself.

You know, the comments reflected in your article remind me of a story that my father often told about Satchel Paige, one of the first black pitchers who was allowed to play in major league baseball. It was a story of how Paige's chances of getting in a game (and ultimately winning it) were many times tied towhether his team was losing. In a short, if they were winning, he didn't pitch. In any event, it was after one of his many such victories, that he was asked by a reporter, "When other (white) pitchers are called out to the mound, they run from the dugout. But you, on the other hand,... when you're called in, you walk out to the mound, and seem to take your good time about it. Why is that?" In response, Paige is reported to have said, "Ain't no sense in rushing into hell for nothing."
The point being that it's a damn if you do, damn if you don't situation.

Given the unprecedented nature of the crisis that is before us, how can you predict that the "blunt spoken" style of, say a Pres. Johnson or Clinton (or Bush??) is what is needed? When were any of these individuals in a situation such as this? And given the utter uniqueness of a Pres. Obama, someone who's story and ascension is itself totally unprecedented, who are you comparing him to and how can you even begin to speculate that how he has chosen to approach these challenges is off the mark or in no ways is effective?

In a nutshell, you need to slow yo' row and stop with the all-too-easy predictions of doom and gloom. Since none of us, and I mean none of us, knows what we're looking at, let's truly hope for the best and give Pres. Obama the same benefit of the doubt that this country has historically given to others in his situation.

After all, is he not, as you have suggested, a very insightful and accomplished individual?

It is congress, the democratic congress that have the power to spend money not the President, Bush or Obama. The polices of Dodd and Franks started the ball rolling thru Fanny and Freddy Mac by letting people get mortgages that did not qualify. This was done to ensure the votes for the Democrat's. The media refuses to hold there feet to the fire. All Democrat's say is it was the Bush administration and not on Obam's watch, well it was on the Democratic Congress watch which the media fail to report

He is doing a horrible job. He has been doing nothing but spending to push his socialized agenda. And what an embarrassment he was with the prime minister of England. England gave the United States wonderful thoughtful gifts that were priceless in value. Obama gave them a box set of 25 movies that can not be watched in England. He is now the laughing stock of England and Europe for his actions. Our media is not reporting on it I wonder why? England is our strongest allie; Obama is a complete and utter failure.

I have to agree with the other two posts. Everybody was so dead set on making history by putting a black man in office that they forgot to really look at credentials. I have nothing against blacks, whites, hispanics, or any race. I Just believe that before you put someone in an office that they had better know what they are doing and not just blow smoke. I don't see any help coming out of the stimulus packages. I see hundreds of thousands of red blooded americans losing their jobs every day. As for the auto industries, well suck it up cut the pay and You over paid executives getting your million dollar bonuses and not caring about us little guys who are losing in everyway everyday, GIVE IT BACK. All I can say is the people have gotten what they voted for, A black man in the presidents seat every though he has now IDEA of what to do. Good luck america and may GOD BLESS us all.

Bush got the American people in this mess. This is his fault, take his riches and share with the poor. He's goiing down as the worst president ever!!!!!!!!! We all need to give Obama a chance, because there are not to many men or women who would want to take over the spilling mess Bush left. We all need to stick together through this mess.

When you surround yourself with Tax Cheats and and a crazy-eyed Pelosi no one not even B.Hussein Obama can do a good job. He's not smart enough to figure out the obvious. One day he thinks that he's Lincoln, another day he thinks he's F.D.R. and his wife thinks that she's Jackie O. Now we have a husband and wife in the White House with Multiple Personality Disorder. What kind of desicions can anyone expect out of that chaos?

No wonder my Dad canceled his Newsweek subscription fifteen years ago. Newsweek has turned into pop culture trash that is enjoyed by people who read on a 3rd grade level written by people who write on a 3rd grade level. All the criticism is coming from people who got fat from the trough of Bush. How is it wasteful to invest in our nation? I guess it is better to blow up and rebuild other nations?
