it is sheer injustice to discuss the concept of venetian art and say grazie to titian and paolo and still ignore GIORGIONE -
the most ORIGINAL AND MODERN VISION to emerge from venice ever, from juduth in hermitage to the frescoes in casa giorgione -there is no other venetian painter who is more contemporary then giorgione .
from the sexual subtlety of dresden venus to the pathos of the warriors in gentlemen in arm,our in uffizi ,giorgione demonstrates an edge over the rest of italian artistes that is only foiled by the great caravaggio inhis spiritual inquests .

his obscure origins are rather vexing but not his triumphant art ,like the three philosophers in kunst historich in vienna to the wisdom of three ages in man in firenze ,he is unmatched in his vision of an ageless vision of modern art as for me the modern in defined as something which cannot be imitated and will always remain origonal and that is the magic of giorgione .
you discover him in kunst historic in vienna ,in dresden and then in florence and you are stunned that you never heard of this great genius before as he makes titian look like a juvenile ,though i admire both titian and paolo verones too ,but giorgione is just the most gorgeous painter i have ever seen with a vision of diverse new themes and subtlety of expression and understanding of light other then the milanese genius of caravaggio .
i do appreciate this article but i am annoyed that the writer ignored giorgione ,i hope newsweek will be able to do another series on the genius of this rather anonymous genius who died so young and yet gave so much to art in his brilliant short life span .
