Once upon a time, Eric Carle wrote a children's book that was so comfy, it came with its own cocoon. Turns out that cute little bug went through a very big metamorphosis.

As a professional speaker to parents and professionals who serve children, I recently spoke in Iowa on how to raise a reader. One of the books I recommended was Hungry Caterpillar. A big THANK YOU Mr. Carle for your contribution to the world of words for children.

What a wonderful tribute to a special man, his life and work. Happy Birthday (80 years young) to Mr Carle and 40th to the Very Hungry Caterpillar! We are so fortunate to have Mr. Carle in this world and all the joy he has brought to children and adults alike. I suspect there is also a wonderful woman behind this man. Thank you to Mr. Carle for sharing a glimpse into his life and for your insightful and informative article. Well done! Cathy

I read TVHC as a child, but never really appreciated until a few years ago. From an emotional and creative standpoint, you could say I've become that caterpillar after years of starving myself. There's so much I want to know and experience before I build my own cocoon and go to sleep. And after that--the unimaginable life of the butterfly in flight.

I have shared every Eric Carle book with my children, now ages 20 and 17, and my kindergarten classes for years. Knowing his memories of his childhood and particularly of his kindergarten year, inspires me to give my little ones a warm and wonderful experience in their time in kindergarten. Thank you, Mr. Carle, for sharing your talent and imagination through your books and for sharing your life experiences. You are truly a blessing to children and an inspiration to parents and teachers everywhere.

I cry every time I think of the caterpillar; I've always thought the poor little thing was lonely, and now I see it was!
