Although my comment is months too late from the posting date of the article, I have been a so called "bone thief", and can tell you from experience that dinosaur skeletons shown to those in power do not even make a small blip on thier radar screens. Most of them are only interested in new finds and getting a "paper" published that they can attach thier own egos to. As one that found, collected, rebuilt, and mostly loved the dinosaurs that I sold, I can say with all honesty I did it for the love and wonder of the fossils themselves. I have shown the professional paleontologists where there are complete dino skeletons and have been told, "It's just another Allosaurus", or , " It is only a Stegasaur". The areas that I took them to still show no sign of being collected, investigated, or otherwise. When the government brought thier case against me, I thought they also must have the same love of the fossil that I had....I was saddened to find out differently.

If you want to talk about thieves, lets start with the Universities and museums!

Here thefts involve stealing large specimen sandstone rocks from private *locked* yards. The thieves will remove fence panels if they have to. With a flat of pansies, culprits sell them as part of a new landscape entry for housing developments; some will cut them up and use them as those jurassic-era-looking stone veneer homes and stone walls. Hundreds and hundreds (that have been part of our property for 30 years untouched) have all been carried off at night. I am sure those who steal make a great profit. It's pretty sad but thieves don't care. There is no respect for anything belonging to someone else (or anyone else's property) in general these days. Guess the public well-being is being/will be affected by major theft too.
