I thought I'd never tell my Muslim parents that I'm gay. Then a terrifying encounter gave me no choice.

    Doctors have said homosexuality is caused by an imbalance and can be fixed with hormone therapy, but gays would rather soldier on damaging their rectums and living miserable lives....

      First of all, homosexuality is not an illness; therefore, it cannot be cured. Trust me on this one. I checked with the Center for Disease Control. Second, being homosexual isn't about sex, it's about love. Gays and lesbians seek from their companions the same thing heterosexual people seek from their significant others: unconditional love and acceptance for who they truly are. Unfortunately, most people in today's society, when thinking of homosexuality, see two men or two women in bed together and that's all. They won't see past that.

      I, personally, am heterosexual. I don't understand that much about homosexuality. Maybe I never will. But I know this: no lesbian or gay ever just suddenly awakens in the morning and decides that they want to be ridiculed and ostracized every day for the rest of their life because of their sexuality. It is not a choice, and for heaven's sakes, CERTAINLY NOT A DISEASE!

        It is a disorder, a hormone inbalance. Not a huge deal but people should be aware. It is not a natural state, it goes against both design and evolution. That being said humans are always pushing the boundaries and limits, raising the bar of what is acceptable and if some choose to go off in that direction then fine.           Tell me something. You're a man or a woman... Did you choose to be that? Are you seeing someone or are you married.... Do you love that person? Did you choose to love that person or is it an emotion that you can't control. Not everything is a choice. And ask any homosexual person you know, and they will tell you they did not choose to be gay. They did not choose to be discriminated against. Why would someone choose that? And honestly if it was a hormone imbalance, with as many teens that come out to their parents and then are forced into therapy for it... Don't you think there would be far fewer gay people because of a legitament treatment for such a disorder?

          But there isn't. Because it's not.

        I don't bother anyone I just laugh because I know the unbigoted truth about why gay people are the way they are. It is just a deviant sexual urge no different that that of a pedophile or an animal abuser. It is a demaning act but really it hurts no one when it happens between two(or more) consenting adults. Have fun with it. :)

            I'm just5 saying people like to do freaky stuff, even heterosexuals and we should just take it for what it is. Remove the veil and move on. If that is what turns you on then just do what makes you happy and don't spend so much time trying to make it acceptable to those who will never understand. Just don't hurt any animals or children. :)

                It's a power issue.

                If acceptancle of gays and lesbians becomes widespread, then the importance of the Biblical verses mandating that gays and lesbians should be put to death diminishes, and I think a lot of these people feel Christianity diminishes as well. I'd completely disagree, but power issues can be hard to discuss with people, as they're a prime candidate for mental blocks that prevent people from seeing themselves clearly.

          I'm a medical student. It is far more complex than just a hormonal imbalance, so stop spreading lies. Anyone who thinks that homosexuality is a choice must be bisexual because if they were truly heterosexual they would know it is not a choice.

If you are born with autism, which is an imbalance, then did they choose to be autistic? What hormone would be the cure? and if so why do you not see it advertised on TV alongside Viagra? Maybe that Sham wow guy can sell it when he gets outta jail for acting all heterosexual-ish with that hooker friend.

      Please, please, offer me some quantitative data from a reliable journal that backs up this statement. Fool! The APA, AMA, and ANA all dispute the fact that homosexuality is a disorder. They denounce ANYONE who attempts conversion therapy. So, if doctors, psychologists, and nurses all disagree with these statements, where are you getting your data? Let me guess, from some unresearched pamphlet from an ultra right-wing Christian group. If they can't convince the masses by twisting interpretation of the Bible, they turn to making false claims about genetics and biology. Curious, isn't it?

    Homosexuality is an abuse of human sexuality and a sin against God and mankind. Sex was designed by God to be a celebration of life within the marriage life long commitment to result in the continuance of the human race and for the pleasure of a faithful heterosexual married couple

    To compare homosexuality to being black or any other color of skin is a blatant lie and simply an attempt to justify sinful behavior.

    It is a sick attempt to avoid personal responsibility for one's life and decisions.

    Homosexuality in the end is and is an addiction.

    How else can you explain human beings engaging in behavior that can kill them or cripple them for life.

    If homosexuality is so normal as the homosexual community wants the rest of the world to think why do they have to go to such outrageous lengths to demand it. Why do the homosexuals and their supporters treat those who chose not to accept homosexuality in such a hateful manner.

    Without artificial means being used to produce life (babies) the natural consequences of the world turning to homosexuality is the end of the human race.

      Actually that seems to describe some forms of religion (especially some types of Christianity) far better than it can homosexuality.

      Consider the idea that a person can be a murderer, rapist, and torturer, but if they "accept Jesus as their personal savior Jesus" all is forgiven and they go to some place called heaven. Talk about avoiding personal responsibility for their own lives and decisions. If they really accepted responsibility they would openly qdmit thier sins, take their punishment and then ask their god to send them to eternal punishment. Instead many of them use their "conversion" to try to get off or get paroled.

      Engaging in risky behavior has nothing to do specifically with homosexuality.

      They do not care if you like or approve of homosexuality. What they have problems with is when you try to use your views to deny them the equal rights that they are entitled to. Homosexuality in general in no way harms you. Same-sex marriages in no way harms you or society.

      But no one (except fools) makes the assumtion that the entire human race would become homosexual. The percentage of homosexual has apparently remained fairly consistent throughout time. somewhere between 7-10% of the population. Since it is not a choice but a biological process that percentage is not likely to change. Therefore there is no threat to the human species. In fact there is a chance that it is nature's way of trying to prevent overpopulatin that humanity has messed with through artificial insemination and religious idiocy of having too many children.

      You're post, like many others, is based on the belief that homosexuality is a choice. As for human beings who engage in behavior that can kill or cripple them, I'd love to know how it cripples me? As for it killing me, I could receive the same STDs through other means than homosexual sex. My grandfather died of AIDS from a blood transfusion. I know many people who have caught STDs through hetero sex. My sexual preference is just as dangerous as yours. Except I don't have to worry about complications that can arise from pregnancy.

      While I do not expect you accept my homosexuality, I do expect for you to accept that you do not control my life, and that your religion of choice does not control my life. While you are welcome to practice your beliefs in your own life, do not force them on me, and I won't try to make you sleep with someone of the same sex.

      The world will not turn to homosexuality, again because it is not a choice. Much like the color of your hair, having one leg shorter than the other, or the color of your skin (yes, I'm saying it) is not a choice. It is something you are born with. Why would I choose to be gay in a world that has bigoted over-religious jerks like you in it?

Believing that we are nothing more than the product of evolution, from a lower form of biological mass to a higher form, any genetic disposition to engage in a sexual relationship that would not advance the species would have been lost millions of years ago.           Except that most gays and lesbians fully appreciate the nature of their actions. Their actions harm no one and are completley natural.

          Actually homosexuality has been accepted as normal throughout history until montheism raised its ugly head and its man-made god and laws took hold of a fair part of the world. Since throughout history there has never been anywhere near a majority population of homosexuals (but there has apparently been a consistant percentage) the species has never been threatened by the natural process of homosexuality. Since no one has ever said that homosexuality has been or would ever be the dominant sexual orientation only a rube would use that as an arguement against it.

          You claim that in cannot be genetic because it would not serve to expand the population. But what if a population grows the point that it needs to have some sort of control placed on it? Some inhibitor to slow the growth. Homosexuality could be a direct step in evolution as such a form of population control.

          Second, I do not know if pedophilia is a choice or not. However, it does not involve to consenting adults. Perhaps it is genetic, and due to the ill effect that it does have on a non-consentual minor, the adult should be locked up. But, being genetic, it would explain why there are so many repeat offenders in the system. But while that has a direct victim to the action, the child necessary for it to be pedophilia, there is no victim in a homosexual relationship.

          As has been pointed out many times, animals throughout the world engage in homosexual conduct. As humans are the only beings who can have the capacity for higher thought, how can you justify saying that these animals are "choosing" homosexuality?

          While it is not normal to be a homosexual, it is also still not a choice. I will grant that when only 1 in 10 people in any population is in a defined group, it cannot be considered normal. However, that does not mean that it is wrong, or should be looked down upon. Unless we are going to start discriminating against people with an extra rib, people who have exceptionally high intelligence, or people who happen to have two different colored eyes, we cannot start picking and choosing. There are so many people out there that would not fall into the category of normal, who would still expect to be treated fairly and equally, that your argument cannot hold up. Is it insane for a person who can qualify for any gold metal in the olympics, due to genetics that help them reach their athletic potential, to be told that they cannot do that anymore, because it's not normal?

          Honestly, what the hell is wrong with you people?

            Well I will say I may not be "religious" enough, But I have a relationship with God. I am not getting into the argument over weather or not homosexuallity is wrong or not. If I go strictly by Canonical Bible, it is a sin. However, so is stealing, lieing, killing, etc. The Bible also says all sins are equal in God's eyes. That lie you told last night is in God's eyes the same as killing that annoying neighbor. Jesus said, "He who is without sin cast the first stone." Therefore I don't cast stones anymore, there was a day I would. Most people only have religion, this is going to church most Sundays, listening to you preacher/priest and going home. Then when something comes up the jump back and claim God to help them and get behind Him. The rest of the time they go around with a Holier than Though thought and will condemn anybody who doesn't agree with there thoughts. In all honesty, I could back up almost anything I wanted with the Bible. All I have to do is take one or two verses here or there, bring them completely out of context, and wholla! The Bible says you are to clense the world of all men and women with tattoos. Human's who attack a person for sinning are in sense sinning themselves. Only God has the authority to judge. By hating a homosexual one is in sinning the same way against Love thy neighbor. God hates the sin, not the person. Even Satan believes in God, Satan also knows scripture better than any human. One who lashes out at sinners and attackt them doesn't have Jesus in their heart for real. They have religion, not a relationship. They may know some of the Bible, but are failing to live it. I am not judging. But we need to search our hearts and souls to find out who is in control of our actions. He who is without sin cast the first stone, Judgement is the Lords.

You see commercials with kids 3-8 using the computer. Are they smarter than you? I would think so. They can maneuver around the internet and get factual information.       First, I wanna know how many FAITHFUL heterosexual relationships do you see everyday? How many HETEROSEXUALS have sex out of wedlock?

Homosexuals treat others who don't accept them harshly because, lets face it, gays are fired, disowned, beaten and/or killed because they aren't straight. I have yet to see a homosexual person kill a heterosexual person for not being gay or for not accepting them. As an atheist, I have to say for religion to sell itself as open and accepting, it's pretty narrowminded and intolerant. Religion needs to go the way of the dinosaur. If you don't accept homosexuals, why did you go out of your way to read an article and post your pious opinion? God is a force of nature, not a book, not a philosophy and most certainly not a set of man-made religious beliefs.

        I've wondered that myself. Why read the article and make the post? And would it be equally acceptable to post on a story about a wedding or about a birth, saying that "straight breeding is ravaging our planet, given to us by God, and must be stopped at all costs?" Because if that's ok, I've been missing out.

    I'm going to show my ignorance here, but I would love to know how the argument that we gay people can't marry someone of the opposite sex shows a lack of consititutional knowledge. I do understand the equal protection clause, but I don't know how it would be used to counter that argument. So please, educate me, just don't try to take away my diploma!

      The equal protection clause is supposed to guarantee equal rights to all. Additionally most Constitutional scholars agree that the US Supreme Court's Loving ruling defines marriage as a civil right between two adults. Since there is no legitimate (non-religious) reason to exclude same-sex couples from that right and, more imporantatly, since there are very specific rights that are granted to married couples (and those rights are still NOT completely granted via civil unions), denying same-sex couples the right to CIVIL marriages (which are solely contracts granting legal rights) denies them equal protection under the law.

        So, it's not so much that we have a right to marry someone of the opposite sex or same sex, just that we have the right to marry. Ok, fair enough, and something that if I can understand, I'm sure I can point out to other people in the future.

        So, what do you think would happen if this went up in front of the Supreme Court tomorrow, with the justices we currently have sitting on bench?

          Not sure. I am fairly sure that Scalia will vote against it because he is incapable of doing his job, and will instead base his decision on illegal religous ideals. I am not sure if Roberts and Alito are capable of basing their decisions on the Constitution (which if they do they will have to rule that same-sex marraige is no different than interracial marraige). I have no idea what Thomas will do, but I hope that he will adhere to the Constituttion. I think that Kennedy will allow it and so will the others. But those are just guesses. It is all but impossible to accurately guess what the Justices will do.

    A few months ago, my brother in law lost his partner of 20 years to brain cancer. (And before any of you God fearing people blame it on God's punishment for being gay, I can assure you his cancer had nothing to do with being homosexual) My brother in law showed such devotion to the love of his life that it would put many people to shame (straight or gay). He had to quit his job to be able to take care of him, and was by his side to the very end, even when his partner could no longer recognize him. With so much stupid hatred in the world, when any two people love each other and sacrifice for one another, and put someone else's needs above your own, that can't be a bad thing.

    Let me get this...err.. "straight", because i was born with a penis, I must use it to procreate. No matter the fact that I do not want children, nor do I feel that there is no need for me to have children. Just because I have a penis is not a reason to use it to create a child. This does not mean that I would, or that i do hate women. I do not think they are somehow "icky". I just will not have sex with someone who by nature will breed unwanted children. I see no reason to waste the time of any female who wishes to procreate. I will not live a lie and marry some woman out of some misguided sense of duty to use my penis in a way that brings forth an unwanted, unneeded child. To do so in that light would and does cheapen the act of bringing forth new life that can be properly cared for, and supported. I do not feel that this world is the place I would like my child exposed to, what with endless wars, piss poor heath care, wasteful greed ridden fraud filled religious dogmas, and silly idolatry of artificially pretty and popular people. This planets people value hate, war, and silly competition over love, respect and cooperation. Not very good religious values IMHO.
    And just to set things in perspective... I will not give value to a god who hates shrimp and lobster. Both of them I choose freely to eat. I love me a plate of good fried shrimp. Well I do choose that in spite of the bibles poo pooing the consumption there of, so i guess just from that sin I will go to heck, so I may as well add being gay to the charge sheet along with wearing polyester blend fabric and being clean shaven. All of which I choose to do, and will NOT change. so go ahead and froth at the mouth about I am going to heck, I do NOT care. I will enjoy a shrimp and lobster dinner with my loving partner and we will go and "non-create" when we have finished our meal.

    Back to the Newsweek story....

    The first part of Shariq's narrative troubles me.

    "One evening I drove to a park known for being Karachi's unofficial cruising spot for gay men. Within a few minutes I noticed a burly man with a heavy mustache in his late 30s gesturing toward me. My heart was pounding as he approached. 'I have a place we can go,' he said, and we started walking toward the park's exit, visions of a forbidden tryst flashing in my mind."

    Later in the story he describes his actions as being driven by lust.

    Among heterosexuals this kind of promiscuous anonymous sexual activity would be a very risky behavior.

    What would our reaction to this story be if a man were telling us about being threatened while visiting a female prostitute? Would we be very sympathetic and say: "Poor fellow. Just trying to live a normal life." Or would we say: "That was stupid. He shouldn't have been doing it."

    Why are these kinds of stories used to build public support for a very risky form of sexual activity? Is he a victim for whom we're supposed to feel sorry, or a fool who got him comeuppance?

    I daresay that if a heterosexual were telling this story, our reactions would not be very sympathetic. So can we blame readers who are not very sympathetic with this homosexual man?

      A valid question. In my opinion, we live in a society/world where hooking up for a one night stand isn't so unusual. Many people go to bars or websites to "hook up." And when something like this inevitable happens, whether it's in this situation or the one you presented, I feel horrible for the person it happens to. It's not that I sleep around, I've always been a one relationship at a time guy, but I do think we all put a certain amount of trust on the line when we go out on a first date or go out to find a one night stand. And that's a huge betrayal.

        Notice how the story positions the reader.

        We are intended to sympathize with Shariq, because he was threatened with physical harm for being homosexual. So we are encouraged to come away from the story thinking that he should be allowed to cruise for anonymous sex, without abuse from bigots, because that is a legitimate form of homosexual sexual expression. Or we're encouraged to assume that he was driven to this dangerous behavior because he wasn't free to pursue "healthy" homosexual relationships.

        But these conclusions ignore the fact that he was living in the US at the time and could engage in monogamous gay relationships at any time he wished. But he didn't want to. He wanted risky sex. Are we supposed to be sympathetic to this foolishness?

        The old saying that "you reap what you sow" comes to mind.

      Because most modern Christians think the Ten Commandments only apply to other Christians. Non-Christians don't really count as people to a lot of modern Christianity, so stuff like "thou shalt not kill" doesn't really apply, for them.

          Wow. You have anger issues. I am a happily married straight Christian new mother. We all know and understand that you have every right to tell this person how you feel. However, you are perpetuating hate problems that do not solve anything. I personally believe that this person has every right to express how they servived a very frightening situation that was caused by people with the same beliefs and ideas as you have. Your comments are immature and by no means contribute to changing anyone's stance on the issue you so ardently decry. Kudos to you for expressing yourself. Shame on you for being mean and spiteful to people in and around your community.

          I will end by saying that this Christian mother has no opinion on whether or not you "notafraidtosayit" can have sex with whoever you want.

Then please explain why the following animals have been observed displaying homosexual behavior: African Elephant, Brown Bear, Brown Rat, Buffalo, Caribou, Domestic Cats, Cheetah, Common Dolphin, Common Marmoset, Common Raccoon, domestic Dogs, European Bison, Chicken, Common Gull, Emu, King Penguin, Anole, Bearded Dragon, Checkered Whiptail Lizard, common garter snake, Desert Tortoise, Gecko, Red Diamond Rattlesnake, Speckled Rattlesnake, Water Moccasin, Western rattlesnake, Wood Turtle

      so if everything we do we can chose can you explain why children are born with a slew of other "disorders" or "chemical inbalances" that they cannot choose? autism, other mental "handicaps", physical "handicaps" (i put quotes around those because some people with "handicaps" are more capable of doing great things than I), or why a child would be born "homosexual"? why do the homosexuals have a choice but the others dont?

      maybe because god made them that way? and jesus loves everyone regardless? if god made the world and the animals and humans, and god is "perfect", then he obviously doesnt make mistakes right? than if it is such a sin, why didnt god just never think up homosexuality in the first place if he was so disgusted by that sin? and why is there so much talk of homosexual sinning as opposed to the millions of people of all ages that have sex out of wedlock on a daily basis (my self included)? why is there so much focus on the sin of homosexuality yet we have our leaders leading us to war, which results in murder and death, which murder is also a sin?


      i mean really, i could go on and on.... just explain those things to me....

    I am a conservative 58 year old w/m who follows no organized religion but do consider myself spiritial. Homosexuality is a sin clearly spelled out in the bible. Cut and dried, that's all there is to it! It is a disgusting and reviling practice. Same sex marrages also are forbidden and I hope I never see the day when they're legalized. Jesus Christ will one day return and banish the homosexual sinners to everlasting agony in Hell.

      But if not, and you decide to go do "God's work" by killing gays or lesbians or whatnot, don't be surprised if you get stopped by someone like me, thrown in jail, and then raped by another man yourself.

      If that happened, would you immediately consider yourself "disgusting" for having participated - however much against your will - in homosexual congress?

    Humans are the only creation with a soul and spirit. God made man in His Own Image, that says something, God wants a relationship with us yes - BUT- he does NOT want to have sex with us. Homosexuality is a big sin, an abhoration to God! He has it listed in the Bible right there with having sex WITH AN ANIMAL--PERVERTED!!!!!! I can't believe you are ACTUALLY teaching and leading other people in your ministry!! It is stated in the Bible that teachers are held at a higher standard because of the responsibility of either leading people TO Christ or AWAY from Christ, and ohh brother!! I HATEf to be the one who has to stand before God and explain why so many people were led astray because you couldn't face God or stand up to Satan because you wanted to pork someone in the rear!! I am sooo sorry for you. This isn't an article of overcoming or strength, it's a cop out, looking for justification for your behavior. You don't see articles about men who decide to break the news to their parents that they are marrying a WOMAN!! You need help.

      I'm getting sick of the historical Christian idea that the personification of God must not only be in the shape of a human, but must be male as well. It's a patriarchal, parochial concept.

      God, as far as I know, is supposed to be "What was, what is, and what will be" in Abrahamic traditions. That includes ALL men, ALL women, ALL children, ALL animals of both genders, and a wide variety of so-called "inanimate" objects for whom gender is not necessarily a useful concept.

      You need spiritual help, my friend. You need to talk to a real theologian and not the bigot priests at whatever church is filling your head full of hate.
