    Republicans, though, aren't waiting.

"I don't think the stimulus that was passed is going to be much help," Romney said. "The stimulus that was passed was, unfortunately, focused more on government and creating employment inside government than it was creating jobs in the private sector."

What can you expect of Mr Obama? The gifts weren't listed on a teleprompter.

You didn't mention the ipod he gave the queen. The ipod wouldn't have been bad......if it had been loaded with great American music from Copeland to Oscar Peterson.

Perhaps he ought to have a statue of late president Bush sent to the Brits to signify one of America's darkest eras.

With regards to Gordon Brown's gifts, HMS GANNET could not have been involved in anti-slavery duties as she was built in 1868. It has also been incorrectly reported that GANNET was HMS RESOLUTE's sister ship. RESOLUTE was a one-off Arctic exploration vessel(formerly named the PTARMIGAN) and was broken up in 1869. Queen Victoria sent the desk made from her timbers to the US President which now stands in the Oval Office. Brown's important gift was RESOLUTE's commissioning document.

The White House aide who chose Obama's gifts needs to be reminded that in 1856 Congress spent $44,000 to refurbish and return the salvaged HMS RESOLUTE to Britain. It was a significant gesture by the USA at a time when the two nations were on the brink of their third war (the British ambassador had been sent home by the US). The ship represents a very Obama-like moment when America "unclenched the fist to shake the hand". She has repaid the sum many times over with a peace dividend in the past 150 years. Diplomats need to be reminded about a ship that prevented a war and is also a symbol of the special relationship.

I'm not familar with the specific history of the HMS Gannet, but it could have been an anti-slaver since British ships continued suppressing Arab slave ships in the Red Sea and the Indian Ocean for decades after the Atlantic slave trade was eliminated.
