We cannot continue to sustain massive trade deficits. They are the true cause of our economic ills. It will be hard to convince average citizens that a trade war would be bad for us when we are the largest importer of goods. We have strayed too far from our founders beliefs that we should import only what we cannot make for ourselves. We have traded jobs for illusory political power overseas. It has it's own pricetag attached to be sure, but it has to be done.

I agree - it's the "League Of Nations" all over again, and while the sound bites speak of "unity" each player will have his or her fingers crossed behind their backs as they speak. Everyone wants peace - but on their own terms, and as we get weaker politically, economically and socially, this will invite more misadventures from those we don't trust, thus giving credence to the Taliban's threat - while it may not happen today, they, and other predators, are clealy waiting, for they see a weak, dying United States, drowing in it's own greed and avarice. I think it will be every nation for itself within six months or less, as none can be trusted.

Maybe, but isn't it stupid what they , liberal, smart capitalists did enhanced with a lot of greed and completely without a sense of responsibility .How many ``B.Maddof's`` is still out there?

In other words, we expect Obama's charisma to finesse good ideas from the G20.

  • Posted By: libertyfirst @ 04/01/2009 5:58:23 AM

...And that would be great. These G20, G8 conferences and visions of a one-world governing body is and always will ridiculous speculation. At its best, the idea would have a relative few trying to orchestrate the impossible; and at its worse, it places way too much power in the hands of too few, setting the stage for both incompetent and corruption to be officially insulated. Let this League of Nations mentality finally die off' and replace it with a pragmatic understanding that by everyone looking out for their own interests, we will find common ground in the everyday trading, selling, and buying of assets, of time, of energies of the millions of business persons, merchants, traders, tourists, and government officials. Spread the impact, don't seek to concentrate it.

bloody hell -they are spending 200 million on this g20 party -may god have mercy on them

I don't see how you could possibly get 20 different countries to agree about what should be done. In the United States we can't even get the two political parties to agree on anything. In Europe 'emerging' markets (like the Czech Republic and Hungary) are asking for a stimulus while established powers like Germany and France are opposed to spending any money. Nobody trusts Russia, and China has no interest in doing anything that is contrary to their own national interests. Oh - and Brazil is blaming the 'Blue Eyed Devils' (not very constructive).

And thus, trade protectionism and barriers will be erected, with only the worlds poor getting the shaft, leading to more wars, coups, sectarian violence and other meaner aspects of the human condition.

I love the phots taken - with a banner - "wee won't pay for their crisis". This is seems to be in Britain. That is probably the last folks who need to worry about paying for someone else. Have them fix their real estate mess. They already took doen Iceland

"17 of the 20 countries had imposed a total of 47 trade-restrictive measures" : in days gone past, these would be the number of measures introduced PER DAY by each country. Not the sum total for the G20. So Newsweek stop being so damn alarmist.

"This week the Czech Prime Minister (and rotating European Union president) Mirek Topolanek warned the European Parliament that the Obama administration's fiscal plans represented "a way to hell." " Until we hear the brilliance of the Czech World Rescue Plan, we can quietly dismiss Topolanek as what he is - a borderline, fringe Bush supporter who never got that the Americans were always intending to use the missile shield as a bargaining chip against Russia.

China is simply flexing its economic muscle before the G20 meeting.

The U.S. Dollar is not about to be replaced, regardless what China's wishes might be.

What would be so terrible if we didn't continue on the globalization path? We managed to have a sound economy before. There would be consequences, especially in regards to foreign policy. Our worldwide influence would wane, but to be honest it has been a process of ever-smaller dividends in return for the jobs we export. Obama has already mortgaged our grand-children's futures for his vision of Utopia. We can't afford to take on any more. The time has come to make a stand. A stand for smaller, more responsible government, for more domestic production and employment, lower taxes and less bureaucracy.

The only thing saving us from a tyrannical one-world government is the blessed lack of agreement among sovereign nations on how to proceed. I sincerely hope we do not give away the store to the rest of the world out of some misplaced guilt.
