    USC has an awesome LGBT community, including a floor specifically for LGBT students and their allies. :)

    The "homosexual agenda"? ... Dang! I didn't get the memo. I checked in my Outlook for Tasks, Calendar meetings, and I can't find that darn agenda.

    I love that the daughter, on the eve of entering college, informed her mom that she is gay. I love even more that that mom, instead of getting all weirded-out about it, supported her daughter's quest to find a gay-friendly place. However, I shake my head in disbelief that the mom could have raised a child all the way from infancy to college and been blindsided by the fact that her daughter is gay on the eve of her entry into college? It's amazing to me that after 18-20 years a parent could be "unaware"? But y'know, "LATE-aware" is sure better than "UN-aware"!! Good on ya!

    Just ignore the religious bigots and homophobes.

      I don't find it strange at all that this mom was unaware of her daughter's sexual orientation - most teens don't discuss their sex lives with their parents, and most parents are still uncomfortable thinking of their teens as sexually active. Most parents don't spend a lot of time discussing sex with their heterosexual teens - discussing homosexuality as their child's orientation is even less likely.

      What's more important to all concerned is that when this young lady finally did discuss her orientation with her mom, her mom was appropriately supportive.

      Go, Mom.

      Two organizations that may be helpful for other parents include PFLAG (Parents and Friends of Lesbians and Gays) and GLSEN (Gay-Lesbian-Straight Education Network).

    Hm..I would think an all-girls school would be even more awkward than a co-ed and more restrictive and homophobic. But that's just me. I went to the University of Wyoming which we all know in the gay community, would come dead last as anyone's choice, yet I had gay friends and found it to be very welcoming and open to all types of people. I think if you surround yourself with true friends, you won't have a problem. But don't be shallow and exclude heterosexual people, or make assumptions that we are all homophobic or else you are be just as prejudiced as you expect others to be.

      I think there is incredible merit to surrounding oneself with all kinds of people, and a good friend is a good friend regardless or orientation or gender ident/expression. However, there is something to be said for going to a college with a strong LGBTQ community -- in which the student can learn and identify with experiences much like any other minority community would -- rather than a community that is accepting but in which the student is still alone in their experiences.

          While that is an idea, it's probably not one that most of us would be willing to take up. We are not looking to isolate ourselves from the rest of the world. We just want a school, where we can be with all other students, without having to worry about GLBT hatred being spread around. Where there are many groups that we can join, including GLBT exclusive groups, but not limited to that.

          So, while for some people the idea is probably great, I wouldn't expect to see it catching on.

            Actually it is a lousy idea. The whole idea is that being LGBT is just as normal and okay as being heterosexual.
            There is no need for a LGBT university. The need is for the LGBT communiity to be treated equally and just like the straight community. All the universities I attended through undergrad, and both grad programs had not probles with gay and lesbian students. I had many friends who were out and my heterosexual friends accepted all of them and if they were dating both members of the couple were always welcomed and included. During undergrad my girlfriend's roommate was lesbian and she never made a pass at her (she knew that she was straight and that we were dating.)

      I've heard from several co-workers that University of Wyoming is a fairly accepting scool for the GLBT students. Having spent a couple of years growing up in Cody, I would have never thought of mentioning anywhere in Wyoming as being accepting. But maybe it being a University setting and town make all the difference?

      Well, lets look at it logically.

      Gay Lesbian Bisexual and Transgendered people is a lot to say. Thus, the media shortened it. But they did not "create a minority group". No, typically, if 51% of more of people is one way and the other 49% of people are nother way, then that 49% are a minority group by all the laws of statistics. Duh.

      LGBT is is the same as GLBT. I'm sorry if that confuses you. It's not creating a new grouping, it's just changing it around depending on your priorities. It's easier than typing out Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual and Transgendered everytime we make a comment to our community. I'm sure you can appreciate when things are made easier.

      More than tolerance, we should teach acceptance. Lesbian, bisexual, transgender, gay and queer people are not some anomaly to be tolerated. They are a substantial portion of the population that deserve equal inclusion in today's society.

    NYU is incredibly expensive, but very gay-friendly. It's very possible to have many social circles there at the same time, so a student can have an intellectually-stimulating and socially-diverse college experience. Gay people usually know from early childhood that they are "different." They know this before they know there's such a thing as sex. And BTW, the Constitution doesn't care with whom you sleep or whether you have sex at all. That's why it doesn't mention it. No one shouts rude things at, or feels they have a socially-sanctioned right to beat up, conservative Christians. A belief system is not the same as an orientation. However, were I inclined to shout something rude at you, WINR, it would be "Nazi!"

    And if thats not good enough for you religous zealots, the ones that respond to such things with "God's laws override the laws of man"...

    Now, I'm not religions, but it is my understanding is that the belief is God made us all in his own image. It is also my understanding that some religions beseech its followers to do unto others as you would do unto yourself. So whats with all the hate? Would you hate yourself? Would you expect people to hate you because of your religion? Well, as much as you may want to believe otherwise, I can almost guarantee that a good majority of the GLBT community doesn't hate Christians because of their religion. They hate the message that is being shouted out by the Christians (other religions too). If people would stop shouting the messages of hate, there wouldn't be an issue.

    Expressing your opinion is fine and welcome. But trying to force your opinion on others is wrong. And placing restrictions on entire sections of the population because of your opinion is downright criminal. Literally. Its unconstitutional.

    So in conclusion, people should really stop hating so much. Do you really think that if you hate someone enough you can change their sexual orientation? Or their religion? Or anything about them? No. The most you can do is upset them and make yourself look like an idiot (and that is expressing my opinion).

    California's UCs are the best and LGBT friendliest universities out there. Most if not all have large LGBT organizations, LGBT Studies courses, LGBT fraternities and on-site LGBT support centers. The top 3 educationally are UC Berkeley, UCLA and UCSD. Coincidentally, those are the top 3 LGBT UCs. With the exception of private Ivy League universities, California UCs are the educational envy of the world.

    Any UC in California welcomes you with open arms. With the exception of the top private universities (Yale, Princeton, etc...) California UCs are the best universities and the educational envy of the world. Very LGBT friendly. Especially UC Berkeley, UCLA and UCSD.

    Another great possibility is Mount Holyoke College in South Hadley, MA (pop. 15,000). Community is used to seeing young ladies walking hand in hand down College Street.
