Do not be so naïve as to believe that torture is an exception in America. It is a global if not a historically long-established phenomenon. In some countries, torture has become a culture, always in the name of national security. The only difference, if there is, lies in the degree of severity, but certainly not in kind.

Basically, the world is made up of oppressors and the oppressed. By instilling fear of torture among the oppressed, the oppressors continue to reign with iron fist to keep their power.

Torture is normally carried out in secret and often ends in death which is likely to be covered up immediately and perpetually, making ???missing??? persons as good as ???dead??? persons.

I would suspect Brennan and the rest know they're going to be in deep and very hot water if this stuff is declassified. I have every faith that Gitmo and Abu Ghraib were just the tip of the iceberg in terms of the level of "harsh interrogation techniques" used on prisoners, and these guys have got to be absolutely terrified that they're actually going to have to account for what they did to the public. I'm pretty sure that public opinion would turn against dozens of high-ranking military and CIA officials and that these guys are doing just about anything and everything they can to try to put a lid on the teakettle before it boils over (and parboils their careers).

Kudos to Holder for continuing to go to bat for our nation's right to see what our military has been doing behind our backs. I think it is crucial that he succeeds if many Americans are ever going to be really able to trust and feel safe with their military leadership again and wish him nothing but the best in these efforts at declassification.

If it wasn't torture then why the reluctance to release them? I'm sorry this job has fallen on Obama, but he wanted the job, and cleaning up Bush's various messes are part of it.

C'mon - let's do some transparency. If what Bush did was so great - why all the trepidation about releasing the info?

The American public has a right to know what took place under the Bush watch. If we are to ever learn, we must know the truth. Publish the memos - no editorials - just the plain memos. Let the public decide for themselves....If this deserves a court case and putting a few torturers on trial - so be it. Obama should stay out of it - let Congress do the work. Obama should just say that he will support the law - and the truth should be known.

As a nation, we have no moral standing if we do not punish those who violated our trust, our laws, and basic decency.

Whether or not it was indecent is immaterial. What is important is whether or not the USA violated it's own laws (because we apparently have no regard for international laws that we helped write). If the law was violated, the perpatrators must be prosecuted. Nobody is above the law.
