Unless we get signal payer health care not only our auto industry will continue to flop but so will many of our other industries . C-span has video of members of congress accepting checks from insurance companies on the floor of congress . If the public saw this information over and over they would make loud noises and get the attention of congress . The president can not get this or any of the things we want done with out our ACTIVE participation . Remember that congress has more power than the president . They control the money and make the laws and represent us . Thats a lot of power . Especially if we put pressure on them .

The only way Detroit can make back is to build cuality vehicles bumper by bumper to compete with European vehicles and the most important the price with the actual price no body no body overseas will purchace any of this vehicles no matter how small or how super hybrid can be this new cars will not survive, we are already satured of vehicles and other Country's can't make any big purchases on their Dilership's because the price is too high for them we don't have any revenue any more why you people don't get it, this is not about us this is about the system in our economy was create for all , the Union's and benefits are not the problem the issue lie in the economy the Congress, the Economist's and the Bank's holding the key to open the door the problem is the actual administration don't know what to do because they don't have the knowledge to know what they going to do after they open that door !.......

Well, it's about time! Too bad the big three wasted so many years churning out huge trucks instead of leading the charge on fuel efficiency. If memory serves Detroit hit a similar wall back in the 70s which gave rise to the Japanese automakers gaining a foothold with their imports which boasted no frills but significant fuel economy and superior reliability. What the US automakers did best was design vehicles that placed form over function for far too long. Oh, and does anyone else think it might be a good idea for the workers to dump the unions? They have long-since forgotten their purpose and the stubborn refusal to accept wage and benefit concessions is hurting the entire state. If the unions have become self-serving entities, they deserve to be kicked to the curb.

Right now it is not so optimistic that big 3 can make big sale in hybrid or plug in hybrid cars because the economy is down and people are reluctant to pay higher price for new hybrid car. The other factors are that the gasoline price is way down compared with a year ago, and Japanese car makers are way ahead of big 3 on producing reliable and fuel efficient hybrid cars . Toyota is planning to make new plug in hybrid car next year. Furthermore, United States is behind asian countries such as Japan, Korea and China in battery development. . I believe Detroit will survive after further downsizing and lowering wage and benefit, as well as greater awareness of new technologies.,

As long as gas is $2.00 a gallon only a small fraction of Americans (less than 20%) are willing to pay extra for a plug-in hybrid or electric car. Gasoline produces 19.4 lbs of greenhouse gasses per gallon. As long as the costs to the environment, human health, and foreign wars are treated as "externalities" in energy pricing we will see little change in market share for EV's. The problems with creating sustainable transportation are more political and social than technological.

i'm sorry, I've never posted a comment on Newsweek before, but I can't let this one pass by. What the heck are you folks doing in publishing such a blatant advertisement like this? If the governor of Michigan wants to troll for business, let her buy an ad, not contribute fake editorial copy.

Well said Governor Granholm. Michigan can help lead the nation back to a thriving manufacturing economy, after our disastrous reliance upon the financial sector, now collapsed after doubling since 1980 as a percent of GDP. I'd also like to use this opportunity to encourage Governor Granholm, when pitching Michigan to foreign, especially European, investors, to mention Michigan's proud history as the first state to ban the death penalty. Michigan may even have the longest-standing death penalty ban in the world. The other contender is Tuscany, which may have had a hiatus during Mussolini's time. Knowledge of this among the European public could steer investment to Michigan instead of the South. Progressive Michigan is first in social justice in creating the middle class, and first in criminal justice by banning the death penalty. Let us now lead the country out of recession!
