The Beales endure because they were authentic, or appeared so. You never get the feeling that they were playing to the camera, even when speaking directly to the Maysleses. It thus allows for our gift of compassion. We can't successfully suspend our disbelief that those on today aren't self-aware. That's the big difference.

I had actually just NETFLIX'd this documentary, and I remember thinking that this had to have been the first reality show. It was a showcase of everything reality TV is now. Mother and daughter were both nuts, competing for attention, both were villian and hero. They loved each other but it was just so dysfunctional. This documentary is just fascinating and anyone who gets a chance should watch it.

I never watch faked realism television -- why does it creep me out to read and watch the Beale sisters? It's so sad and yet so fascinating. I hate myself for watching but, I do so adore those two amazing creatures.
