I only see more and more professing their faith in our area...maybe the polls were not so much a sampling, but rather a selective poll????

As a fighter pilot here at Miramar air station in San Diego for seven years, I have never encountered another pilot who didn't believe in Jesus Christ or God. This may be only a small percentage of people as an example, but for the most part I would estimate that the majority of my fellow Navy men and women are believers as well.
We perform a service of protecting our Country that is dangerous and requires us to sacrifice our freedom as a civilian and to put ourselves in harms way by our own choice. I could not fly my F18 Hornet whether in practice or actual engagement if I only had to answer to myself or my commanding officer. The job I perform requires not only that I have the courage, knowledge and skill to fly my aircraft effectively and to meet my objective, but also requires a spiritual conscious and belief.
I guess the old saying "You will never find an Atheist in a fox hole", is still accurate today.

There is a bug difference in claiming religious beliefs and living such. It's a lot easier to claim to be a Good Chrisitan and to have good morals than it is to actually live that way. I know many people who claim to be religious yet rarley attend church services. I know lots of people who claim to family family values to the point that when they fail at maintaining a family, they divorce and try, try again. Iwould like to see a study into just how religious people who claim to be religious really are.
A person is not religious becase he doesn't attend church services . This mindset is the reason I cleansed my inner-self from the brainwashing of the Roman Catholic up-bringing and education 40 years ago. When I was 16 I had an epiphany of mind and spirit when all I heard comming out of Commercialized Religion was not the loving ,caring, inclusionary,"Christ Like Teachings"" but a exclusionary, hateful, close minded, opionated group of self-centered egotistic, homophobic men , afraid of letting women join their private club. When the message is if you don't worship and believe exactaly the way we do you are not a Christian and your damned for eternity. Well I be Damned . I thought God would Judge us in the final days? If God judges you the way you have judged others, I pray for your Souls!!!
If we could get rid of the lying news journalists, America could actually regain its luster. As long as the lying, biased, stupid journalists are allowed to strut their incompetence, America will look like a pile of fecal matter. Journalists have built that pile with their incompetence, bias, and outright lies. Journalists are like mosquitoes, they are better off killed.
For those of us who live outside the United States and thus have a unique vantage point from which to view your affair, it's quite obvious what's going on - much of what passes for Christianity in America is a weapon in an arsenal of hate, promoted by the Republican Party for the purpose of supporting a ruthless and incompetent oligarchy that hasn't got a religious bone in their body.
It appears that the Republican Party was guilty of organizing every rube in the country to vote in a bloc and elect the worst President in modern American history. Every financial instrument in your country is now destroyed and there's a good possibility that you'll never climb out of the hole you've dug for yourself.
You've let a hysterical mob call the shots since at least the mid 60's. You very well may have destroyed your nation. If Providence should give you a second chance, I hope you won't blow it again.
Since it seems English is your native tongue, history show that without American blood and treasure, you'd be speaking German if you were even alive. Maybe it's too bad you're not. The Germans would have educated you better; taught you better critical thinking, and you'd not have swallowed what your local parlor pinks push.
parlor pinks push - now say that 10 times fast!
And from which nation do you hale from? And do not forget, we have also come to the aid of many countries that have had natural accurences that had destored much of their medical and food reserves within the last 40 yrs as well.
Yeah Betsy Ross, and during the last century it took the US three years to join the First World War and two years to join the Second World War. In other words, the peoples of the British Empire fought the Germans for 10 years, while the United States fought them for 5 - effectively sitting out half of the fighting. But then, the Germans really DID have weapons of mass destruction, so I can see how that must have been confusing for y'all. Newsflash, not everyone wants to live there. The way you act as if you invented every good idea and are the only place it exists is both ignorant and arrogant. Come to think of it, no wonder you're more religious than anyone else.
Thank you for being out of the country.
THANK GOD YOU AREN'T FROM AMERICA. OUR NATION WAS FOUNDED UNDER GOD AND THE REPUBLICAN PARTY HAS TRIED IT'S BEST TO KEEP THE NATION UNDER THE CONSTITUTIONS IT WAS FOUNDED UNDER UNFORTUNATELY THIS NATION HAS FORGOTTEN WHAT IT STANDS FOR AND WHAT IT WAS FOUNDED FOR AND THIS NATION HAS UNFORTUANTELY MOT BEEN RULED BY THE REPUBLICAN PARTY SINCE THE 60'S APARENTLY YOU DON'T REALIZE THAT WE HAVE HAD SEVERAL DEMOCRATIC PRESIDENTS WHO HAVE CAUSED LOTS OF PROBLEMS THAT THE REPUBLICAN PRESIDENTS HAVE TRIED TO REPAIR AND HAD DEMOCRATIC CONGRESS & HOUSE WHO HAVE RUINED OUR FINANCIAL SITUATUION AND THE REPUBLICAN PRESIDENTS AND CONGRESS HAVE TRIED TO REPAIR. THE DEMOCRATES ARE THE ONE WHO HAS GOTTEN THIS NATION ON WELFARE & UNEMPLOYMENT AND THE ETHICS THAT THEY DON'T HAVE TO WORK AND WE OWE THEM. WE NEED GOD BACK IN SCHOOLS, IN OUR LAWS AND IN OUR GOVERMENT OR WE ARE NOT GOING TO SURVIVE BUT FOR US CHRISTIANS WE KNOW THAT IN THE END GOD WILL RISE AND TAKE US WITH HIM.
Here's one to chew on for a while: The Republican Party would have vanished long ago in any other country in the world. There exists no "equivalent" party with their same beliefs and guiding principles and religious hypocrisy anywhere else on earth. Not so with Democrats. It is obvious that Democrats feel a great deal of acceptance and a new welcoming from many, if not most, other countries. So, as the Republican Party loses its stranglehold on American government and society, it realizes that this could very well be its last death march. Therefor, their current actions and behavior is very predictable: It is as a cornered dog with no where else to go... biting, snapping, barking, using caps-locks... lol.
Question: Why is it so important for you to be more accepted by people you've never met outside of your own country, than the people who live around you and have helped make your life and the lives of countless millions around the world better?
I never get this answered.
Why do you care so much about what someone in Iran or the UK or France, or Russia, or China, or Chile thinks of you? Why? What is so important about it?
Do you need the approval of everyone around you before you make any decision? That's not healthy for you. It shows a lack of personal identity and a gang-like, group-think mentality.
Why do you care so much about what someone in Iran or the UK or France, or Russia, or China, or Chile thinks of you? Why? What is so important about it?
Americans are not alone on this planet. As we found out when we invaded a country that was not a threat to us. Other countries opinions of us do matter. Our troops were brought into the most dire of situations with very little international support. Our economy does not just flourish when we buy our own goods, but when others import our goods as well. When world leaders (and common people) relate to each other with diplomacy and courtesy, we can all look forward to brighter futures.
That is why we care.
There is nothing wrong with emotionally loving your wife, family, nation, sports team, etc. more than someone else's wife, family, nation, sports team, etc.. When it comes to freedom, opportunity and justice, both the Creator God and the U.S. Constitution want us to love our neighbor as ourself and recognize that all men(humans) are created equal(not in looks or talent but equally deserving access to freedom, opportunity and justice) and endowed by their Creator with unalienable rights. As a righteous judge, if your wife, family, nation, sports team, etc. was in the wrong in a dispute, you would have to rule against him/her/them.
The death of the Republican Part is greatly exagerated as you will see in 2010 and 2012. Enjoy your day in the sun while you can. The seeds of your Democrat party's destruction are sown and sprouting.
First off, stop the ALL CAP LOCKS. On the internet, no one can hear you yell. But reading cap locks does hurt my eyes.
Secondly, our Founding Fathers may have deeply believed in God. You may have "under God" in our pledge and "In God we trust" on our coins. But this is not a Christian nation. This is a diverse nation with a number of people of many different religious beliefs, including many that do not believe in god. Our nation did not "forget what it stands for and what it was founded for". It realized that there are people other than Christians who call themselves Americans and that these people have rights and deserve respect too. You should do the same.
As for the Republican Party, you religious right psychopaths are the ones who have forgotten what the Republican Party stands for and you destroyed the party and harmed the country as a result. I'll bet you call yourself Conservative and yet I doubt you read the Conscience of a Conservative by Barry Goldwater. You know what he says in it about the primary concern of a Conservative? It should always be "are we maximizing freedom?" Well, explain to me how denying gays the right to marry and having public policies enforcing your Judeo-Christian values on those who do not share them is "maximizing freedom". Face it, you want to minimize sin at all cost, even if it means minimizing freedom as well. The Republicans supposedly believe in fiscal responsibility, limited government, unholding the Constitution, peace through strength, innovative ideas, etc. Do you call the massive deficits and spending under Bush fiscally responsible? The government under Bush was big government, not limited government. Bush and the Republicans nonchalantly stepped on the Constitution to fight the war on terror and push their agenda, including the agenda of the Religious Right. Do you call the Iraq War "peace through strength"? And right now, where are the innovative ideas? All I hear from the Republicans is tax cuts, Rush Limbaugh, complaining about the Democrats, etc. I have yet to hear of one good idea from the Republicans since McCain was nominated. The Republicans screwed up. They need to change their evil ways. Complaining about the Democrats will never do it. Though if all your Evangelical Christians left the party and never returned, it would be a MAJOR improvement. (By the way I used to be a Republican before you destroyed the party. So I reregistered independent. I'll register Republican again once the party gets it's act together and the Religious Right is no longer a major influence.)
Actually "One Nation Under God" and "In God We Trust" was only added officially during the 1950s / 60s when it was thought as a way to show we stood against communism and non believers.. it was first around just after the civil war when everyone went ape *** with religion, it then died out and didn't make another come back till just after WWII... The founding of this country was not under god, it was under the freedom of man from such tyranny.
The Founding Fathers were deeply religious and there is evidence to support that some Founding Fathers thought religion was necessary for the democracy to work. Nonetheless, thank you for pointing that "under God" and "In God We Trust" occurred after the founding of our Country. I wrote at this in my post in a funny way and am well aware of this distinction. I was merely remarking that historically our country may have been treated as a Christian Nation, by the Founding Fathers or by (separately and more recently) putting God on our nation's pledge, coins, etc., but that does not make us a Christian nation. Christians seem to conveniently forget that there are a number of atheists and other non-Christians who call themselves Americans.
You must be near some wierd-ass Christians, then.
Oh no! The Christians are coming! And they're going to do good works! AHHHH!!!!
Why must I "be near some wierd-ass Christians"? Because I fear the fanatical Christians. Firstly, I have no problem with the average Christian, just the fanatical ones. Moreover, these fanatical Christians are not simply "doing good works". They are infringing upon the rights of gays to marry. They are requesting Creationism to be taught in science classes. They are trying to push their beliefs into public policies that non-Christians must live with. They do this while forgetting that this is not simply a "Christian nation" but a nation with a lot of non-Christians as well as Christians. While doing this, they have destroyed a political party I once belonged to, harmed our country, and did great damage to the things I stand for. The Evangelical Christian fanatics are truly a threat and need to be stopped. Please do not treat them as some benign doers of good works and mock me for stating otherwise.
Any fanatical group is to be feared. Anyone over the top has issues. Average, down the middle of the road, keeping life in balance... that is what works.
The founding fathers had no interest in establishing any brand of religion as the legal and approved religion. They were not setting up a theocracy. They made sure that the U.S. Constitution mandated that the government be religion neutral. The government was not given the right to prevent religious belief or to establish religious belief. The government was assigned the task of preventing you from forcing your personal religious or non-religious morals on your neighbor and preventing your neighbor from trying to do the same to you.
And the key for our country is "The Freedom of Man". Man being the race of people.
Excellent Comment!
All caps, didn't read.
Hi Osama, how you doing?
Do you live out of the country? Not only does it sound like you're grossly misinformed about U.S. history and politics, your grammar and spelling are terrible.
caps lock doesnt make your point any smarter, just makes it more annoying......
God is neither Democrat or Republican. Scripture tell us to pray for those in authority so that we may lead a quiet and peaceable life. Bringing political affiliations into the mix has nothing to do with who's right or who's wrong. If they're not seeking God for direction, the land will suffer, poor decisions will be made. We need to pray and ask Almighty God for his soveriegn protection and guidance in all our affairs. He is a God of order and love but he is also a consuming fire. My role as a believer is to pray and not speak ill of those that have been placed in position of authority. They are human and will fail us But God will Never Fail.
I would never want to live in your country. Thank God that I am an American. We will survive good presidents and bad ones too, we will survive troubles in our economy, we are resilient and proud. We are the ones who reach our arms around the world to share our prosperity. We give the most and help the most. Why in the world does everyone want to live here, could it be because we have something wonderful to offer?
This is exactly the kind of arrogance that fuels the ire of the rest of the world. If the United States were a person at a party, we would be the pompous ass frat boy talking trash to anyone who will listen, more interested in our cell phone than the peace, prosperity and well being of the world.
While "they" are the arrogant, blind, lecturing douchebags sitting in the corner who can't quite play the guitar but always try to.
For whom do you speak when you say "those of us"? You are a single person, blinded by your disdain for those with whom you disagree philosophically and idealogically, and all you know to do is to condemn and criticize those in whose shoes you have never stepped. This country is the greatest country on earth, and if by some chance the current administration allows it survive intact without bankrupting it, the rest of the world will continue to depend on our financial successes and be burdened by our financial woes. No other country on earth can make that claim. We are a land of freedoms, and while some would like to quash the freedoms of those who they disagree with, I will continue to fight and sacrifice for those who I disagree with to be able to speak their mind, even if it is without the benefit of understanding what is truly at stake. You have obviously never experienced or have you had the benefit of understanding what it means to sacrifice something for your beliefs and convictions, for if you had, you would not make such ad-hominem attacks on a large percentage of the US populace. Given the fact that the rest of the world is dependent upon the success of the US, I still don't understand how some can continue to approach us with such a critical tone and disdain, for we have done more to benefit this planet than all of the other countries on earth combined, so you may keep your external view, having not experienced America at it's heart and knowing what it truly is to be American. We will survive the current struggles we are experiencing and we will be better for it. How remains to be seen, but you can rest assured that when we come out with our heads held high, we will continue to support those who have spit in our faces over the years and will continue to do so against the better judgement of some because we are a most generous, caring, and loving people, contrary to what many so-called journalists may write.
We are the land of freedoms? Have you ever looked at the giant country sharing our border to the north? Take a good long look at those folks. You would quickly notice they have long been enjoying freedoms that citizens of the U.S.A are still fighting to obtain. Don't be so arrogant.
So we are the good guys and they are the bad guys? OW!!! I feel good da da da da da da da da! Don't you know that I should? Da da da da da da da. We love God and they don't!? And of course, being God lovin good guys we have the right to do bad things to the bad guys because..........well........ they're the bad guys!!!! It's all so clear now! If we do it we can't be wrong because.......(say it all together now)....we're the good guys!!!
We are the good guys and we couldn't be prouder!
And if you don't believe us, we'll yell a liitle louder!!
Yea kill those ole bad guys!
Whoops! Those were kids!! Oh well, they would have grown up to be bad guys so its just good prevention tactics.
Remember it's the thought that counts.
2 yes, the time is coming that whoever kills you will think that he offers God service. (Joh 16:2 NKJ)
Put down the Beeb and the worker's world daily. You're not getting an accurate picture. Or you're mentally imbalanced. Either way, you shouldn't be on the nets.
The 60's? The Repubs are responsible? Christianity is a weapon? Dare I ask what religion you profess? Can you tell me which religion you would prefer be the basis of the laws that govern you? I suppose the place you live has millions of people trying to immigrate to your country, right? Perhaps you're issue with Christianity is the fact that it has certain beliefs that you disagree with!? When you can point to a nation that is more charitable, saved more lives by giving up ishedding it own blood, has more people trying to come to this country to escape tyranny (religious or dictatorial), then, and only then will your words have an ounce of credibility.
except for when we've trounced democratic leaders in favors of despots, you mean besides that right?
I don't know who was polled but everyone I know on both sides of the Country say they are Christians. Where and who did Newsweek poll? This is nothing more than the left wing part of society talking.
This is interesting since 85% of Americans right after 9/11 claimed to believe in God and to be "christians". Even later polls have shown a majority of Americans claim to be christian". Fickle Americans, or wishful thinking on the part of the socialist democrats and their aetheist propagandists in the media?
The idea that this is a "Christian nation" is purely political, and not only lacks a basis in fact, it directly contradicts the fact that this was intended from the beginning to be a religiously neutral nation. How many of the founders weren't even Christian? Deism was as important a force in guiding their beliefs, as a group, as was Christianity. I am glad to see Americans finally coming around to the nation that freedom of religion means just that - freedom; to choose or not choose, and that it necessarily involves freedom FROM religion in the public sphere. Have your beliefs - preach them to your friends and families, but do NOT try to impose them through the use of my tax money, and DO NOT try to restrict the freedom of people outside your church, based on your own religious beliefs. To do so (e.g. Proposition 8) is a profoundly un-American concept, that would have the founders of this nation vomiting blood.
Morals are innate and/or taught by parents/guardians/teachers/friends. Being kind and helpful to other people and animals makes me feel good inside for reasons I'll never know. I left the church about 10 years ago after repeatedly seeing those around me in church with their nice dresses and suits on trying to sing their sins away. I am not saying all people who go to church are bad-- it's just that I don't need to go there. I also think the church has no place in our government-- they should be receiving zero dollars of our tax money!
Sigh.
Arrogance and ignorance beget arrogance and ignorance on both sides. "You" make broad generalizations about another's beliefs as though your beliefs are superior because you have no faith. If you are one who does so, you're as bad as the darkness you supposedly see.
I'm speaking as someone raised, fallen away from, objective to, and seeking, but still tolerant as to others belief. As we ALL should be. It's called objectivity and critical thinking. Learn it, live it ,love it
The US is a deeply religious land because we are free to be so on an individual level. We still understand as a collective that while our choices are guided by our morals, that the church has a certain place in our life and interferring with the givernment isn't the wisest part.
On a side note, speaking of morals: Where do they originate from? Are they innate to humanity? Or did they come from teaching within a church/temple/etc. ?
Many Americans who identify themselves as Christians (including myself) do not identify with the fundamentalist brand of Christianity espoused by many members of the last administration and, indeed, by a significant portion of self-described political conservitaves in general. We hesitate to call our country "Christian" for fear of this label being interpreted as fundamentalist and politically conservative. In addition, each person is created equal and is treated as equal before the law, which is based on reason and not on religion. My Jewish, Buddhist, Hindu, Muslim, and Native American neighbors are to be treated the same as my Christian brethren before the law. This is the real reason why it is not correct to call us a Christian nation. We uphold the rule of law. Our government is a secular institution and for good reason.
Ah progress for our secular democracy as more and more people wake up to the lies of faith. We can thank the christian conspiracy and immoral minority for giving us the Reagan, Bush, Bush National Debt of over $10 trillion and for making our country a pariah around the world. The evangelical christian lunatic fringe is the greatest threat to our secular democracy and the sooner they have no influence in our country the better off all of us will be. Our forefathers knew the evils of religion sticking it's ugly nose into politics and that's why they insisted wisely upon Separation of church and State.
It's a sign of the times. The Bible prophesied that in the "last days" there would be a "falling away" from the faith. Those who aren't grounded on the foundation of Christ Jesus will fall from the faith. 1 Timothy 4: 1-3
You religious folk are always so potent behind your stock dialogue, anonymously spewed on the net. But in the face of calm reason and debate, in real time, where there's no delay in response between you and other other person, your whole thing always falls apart. But I suppose that's how religion always survived: by limiting, if not out right shunning, any contesting viewpoint.
Name-calling, scare tactics, being a smartass; these things prove nothing (and that goes for both sides of the religion debate). Put aside your feelings sometimes, and be logical. Feelings often blind you, much like a drug. Think about it. Have evidence, facts, and proof -- something you can hold and show other people so that it's not just your mind's reality, but actual reality, because those are the things that exist no matter how you "feel" about them.
True Christianity is based on not controlling anyone else, but ourselves. Much damage has been done to, and in the name of Christianity by those who seek personal gain (in any form) by those who use their faith to try to control anyone else. True Christianity is based entirely on putting the welfare of others above your own as Christ demonstrated through His life and teachings. Thank God that we have the freedom to express our viewpoints without fear of reprisals. As a veteran of the US Army I am happy to see free speech at work.
So because Christians cannot prove the existance of God, therefore God doesn't exist? Is that your argument Cat456? Then to put the burden of proof back on your shoulders, show me a hydrogen atom, show me a Black Hole. We all know they exist but you cannot see them. Explain to me the hundreds of instances each year when someone gravely ill recovers, yet the very doctors treating them are at a total loss for explaination as to how they recovered. Prove to me Cat456 that God doesn't exist.
In my opinion, a strong ethical understanding and objective view of the world as it exhists today far and away supersedes any metaphorical teachings a religious ideaology can provide. Nor do I need to believe in a God or some "gray haired father figure creator" in the heavens for me to look at that same sky, or any other naturally occuring phenomena to realize that it is truely a wondrous feat of creation and that we are all able to enjoy and take part of this sublime beauty. I also don't need any of this phenomena to be explained away by the belief in some heavenly creator as I am certain there is a scientific reason why everything exists, whether or not we will ever truely understand the scientific process behind it or not. What worries me more than anything this is the insanely zealous and irrational behaviour of some of the people on this planet who buy into their particular brand of religous ideology lock, stock and barrel and use it to polarize and justify the most abhorrent beliefs and behavior imaginable.
@Cat456: Your argument against religion is that it's based on faith. The word faith means that something is taken without proof. Religion is (mostly) based on faith. There are a few that claim to have seen proof.
Your argument, while based on needing logical proof and fact to support anything, is illogical in itself because of the very definition of fath.
You can argue someone's facts. You can *try* to argue someone's beliefs. There is a difference..
@Cat456: What is your problem exactly with someone else's faith? The lack that you haven't found any?
Isn't it funny that according to the article "The survey was conducted among 1,003 adults, age 18 and over, on April 1 and 2, 2009" Now, I'm in college and have taken a class on statistics an do understand that you can get a good representation of a population based on a good sized sample. But is there really a point to arguing over an article that talks about a nation of 350million + people when they are using 1,003 peoples opinions??
"The NEWSWEEK poll" is absolutely useless, based on the simple "numbers". NEWSWEEK pollsjust over 1000 adults in the USA, which has an incredibly diverse population of more than 300 million. How ineffective and useless is the NEWSWEEK sampling? Consider that "if NEWSWEEK or anyone conducted a poll among 300 thousand people, that "sampling" would equal ane tenth of one percent of the entire US population. Therefore, 3 thousand equals one hundredth of one percent of Americans and this poll, and many like it, are based on a sampling of one thousand people??? What is most absurd about NEWSWEEKS methodology, their staffs conducting these polls actually believe they have a solid foundation for putting out an article based on their polling? What's more, NEWSWEEK and their pollings staffs attempt to "find trends" using such a minute amount of sampling, and nothing could be more ridiculous. I do find NEWSWEEK to be a decent magazine and read it often over the past 45 years, but the entire "concept of polling" combined with the maner the results are reported is truly meaningless.
thats the beauty of random sampling
I suggest that you learn how random sampling works and why it's mathematically accurate before making sweeping generalizations like this. Discarding actual evidence in favor of your own opinions and biases is far more inaccurate than the tiny percentage of error on a poll like this one.
I suggest that you learn how random sampling works and why it's mathematically accurate before making sweeping statements like this. You're basically choosing to disbelieve something because of your own opinions and biases, and those are far more erroneous than the tiny margin of error on a poll like this one.
