Whether or not people are religious is not the issue. People can chose for themselves what religion they wish to practice and how involved in religion they wish to be. The issue is whether religious viewpoints and values should influence decisions made in the political arena.

The values and morals of ANY religion have absolutely no place in politics with respect establishing public policy or writing legislation. We need to focus on ETHICAL behavior and leave morals in the church and within every individual's home.

We were never a "Christian" nation. Neither are we a "Caucasian" nation or an "Anglo" nation. The notion that one group of religions is more American than any other is contrary to the tenets established by our founding fathers when they endorsed the "separation of church and state" as a fundamental concept in the US Constitution.

This poll might not take into consideration that Catholics are Christian as well. Anyone believing in Jesus Christ is a Christian. More and more people understand the difference between religion and faith. The idea that Christianity is declining or falling is absurd. Christianity is growing in this country. Once again I find myself questioning the validity of journalism.

If one lives a good, honest, giving and selfless life, it matters not whether one is religious or not.

Who are you polling? As a young catholic family we find you cover offensive!! I knew Newsweek loved socialism and now we know they love atheism as well. Nothing from your magazine surprises me -- I suppose that is why nobody subscribes.

History shows us that as a society matures and its affluence increases, it's social morals and values detireate with respect to religion. Fortunately more and more people are understanding the difference between religion and faith. As another posted comment has stated, fewer and fewer people will profess God. Rest assured the fall of Christianity is far from taking place.

I'm not suprised fewer and fewer people are professing faith in God. Jesus said, "Many are called...few are chosen." The body of Christ will survive America - and any other nation after that.

Even with the increase of those not professing a religious affiliation, the protestant evangelicals recognized a net gain (these are the right wing 'nuts' the lefties like to demonize).

Is it any wonder then that GREED brought about the current economic havoc?

    ''Religious beliefs''

Strange, how NEWSWEAK had no problems with this when Obama was in the running plastering no fewer [the most of any national magazine, paper or other news publication] than six separate photographs of Obama including covers that showed him in front of churches, crosses, pulpits or deep in prayer, making even the KOSSACKS nervous, thinking that Meacham had gone off on some Jeezus Jag.
