Wade Willis, a wildlife biologist who works for the Defenders, claims that the state really wants "unlimited commercial consumption" of game. "They want to artificially turn Alaska into a game farm, into one big hunting ground," he says. "It's a gamble based on a far-right political agenda, not on science."

This is true, this is what they want to do !

11,000 wolves left in Alaska ?? My god, I imagined it was in the hundreds of thousand. We cannot let these rednecks persecute and bring this wonderful predator to extinction. They must be stopped !

Are you really surprised by this? I hadn't heard that before, but after hearing Palin speak so fervently about hunting, none of this sounds too outlandish, for even the Alaskans. She has certainly put a blackeye on the face of Alaska. Wouldn't you think, the smarter ones would be embarrassed? Evidently not. Mostly, I hear support for her. Go figure!

If people who shoot wolfs out of airplanes want to call themselves hunters, knock yourself out. I guess people who use explosives to fish are also called fisherman. A true hunter takes nature on without any advantages other then their skill and rifle. If you are beaten by nature, then maybe you need to improve your hunting skills not rent an airplane and shoot your target from it.

Palin is a pig, a clever & devious pig, but a pig nonetheless. How much does she spend to hunt wolves with helicopters in UNINHABITED areas of wilderness? Indescriminate killings can also have a long term effect on the genepool and future of the species.

But hey Palin is great at spending taxpayer money. That's why she never moved into the governor's mansion, rather she commutes regularly and charges the state for her commute and her overtime while 'working from home' and commuting.

Remember Pork is only Pork when Dems are spending money to actually help the people. When Pubbies do it to line their pockets, it's called business.

      Yeah? The explain this:

The Chicago Tribune Apr.10,2009: ''The Tyranny Of Hypocrisy''

You will find within, that those that you believe are ''helping the people'' are actually helping themselves. An all-Democrat rogues gallery,it also includes one US state governor, Pennsylvanias Ed Rendell, who is copping cash the old fashioned way, Tammany-style,as are the rest of these Dem crooks whose stench from all of the graft and corruption now occuring in the ''Blue East'' can be smelled all the way to Fairbanks.
The hack lackies in the press of course, [including NEWSWEAK and their MSNBC pals] will rarely if ever report on such developments, focusing on the Palin D'affaire du Minute rather than how a political party which promised to ''drain the swamp'' of corruption is so far sunk in it, that they need a submarine to get around.

I see that Democrat Rep. Paul Visclosky has retained himself a lawyer, according to the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette.

Now why would he have to do this.....?

You're not "on topic!" So what else is new?

        • Posted By: Lee Holmes @ 04/11/2009 6:26:56 PM

Can it. I was specifically ''on topic'' in my response to the Palin/GOP-basher which sufficed,as I used specific citation, and he....did not.......

          No. It is rather,corruption.

The Associated Press Apr. 06,2009: : ''Ethics Committee Opens Jackson Probe''

''Jackson'', of course, being Democrat Rep. Jesse Jackson Jr. of Illinois.

It's amazing, Amanda, how you wrote an entire article on predator control, mentioned the Board of Game, spoke to members of that Board and completely avoided the controversy that Palin has stacked the Board to include only people whose living depends upon commercial hunting, guiding and fishing and have included NO NATIVES? How did you manage, in this "balanced" article to completely avoid discussion of the Native subsistence population, the fact that there and no lont-time everyday Alaskans (like my family) who fish/hunt for food but are against the rich trophy hunters who are the real reason these wolves are being killed? How did you manage to mention only the out-of-state opposition when aerial wolf hunting was soundly defeated TWICE BY ALASKANS?

    Yeah...great article...

Again, it is all about greed.. These rednecks will destroy anything in their path so they can have all the moose and elks for themselves. I am just so disgusted !! they are doing what they did over 100 years ago, bring the wolf to extinction. How can we let them ? If they cannot coexist with wildlife, they should move. I feel for our wildlife. again they are the victims of persecution.

    • Posted By: chris s. @ 04/11/2009 6:18:54 PM

Said it before, so I'll say it again. Even Jeff Foxworthy says being called redneck is not always a compliment.

  • Posted By: nimodahooligan @ 04/10/2009 3:30:42 PM

this is going to make for some interesting comments....

they could have easily left Palins name out of it, but her name is the attention grabber.

    my take on it?

dont move into an area populated by wolves and other dangerous wildlife unless your prepared to deal with it. duh.

and dont shoot wolves just because the species at large is considered a "pest". why did you put your goat farm with small fences/openings next to an area known for wolves? cuz your an idiot, and now you want to retaliate against an animal that is just doing what it has to do, that is eat and feed its young. they are living beings with families that are just trying to surivive against humanity edging in on THEY'RE territory.

and, personally, hunting from a plane/helicopter with a high powered rifle is for sissies. if your going to hunt, get on they're level, and HUNT. thats like those guys that sit up in a tree for hours covered in deer piss to attract deer, thats not hunting, thats cheating and entrapment. its lame, and way to easy.

Talk to the cattle ranchers near Yellowstone national Park. the Indians killed off the wolves and then the gov planted some and they are a threat to you when you go to the park. Go See.

      • Posted By: chris s. @ 04/11/2009 6:12:15 PM

Been to the park and felt safe. What did you do? Poke 'em with a stick or something?

      • Posted By: buzz13 @ 04/11/2009 8:03:54 AM

#1 Indians didn't kill off the wolves in the lower 48, the whiteman did.
#2 Yellowstone is safe to visit and campin, because there has not been any wolf attacks on people in the park.
#3 The ranchers in Montanaget paid for any livestock that a wolf kills, and that number is less than 1% of alllivestock in the area.
#4 You seem to be so misinformed aboutso much, maybe if you learned how to read and understand you woul come across better.

      • Posted By: buzz13 @ 04/11/2009 7:55:33 AM

#1 The indians did not kill off the wolves, the white man did when settling this country (to make it safe for livestock). Most indian tribes consider the wolf sacred.
#2 The wolves in Yellowstone are not a threat to anyone visiting the park. I have never heard of any attack on humans by wolves in the park.
#3 If you only get information from Montana cattlemen, then you are only hearing the argument to eradicate wolves to save less than 1% of all of the livestock raised in the area (by the way the ranchers get paid for any animals that are killed by wolves).

for the record, i have hunted in the past.

but i HUNTED.... no rifles, no scopes, not bait, no traps. bow and arrow.

half of the time whatever your hunting is out of range and the shot is difficult. but its not about bagging as many animals as possible and only killing them to mount em over your mantle at home.... eat what you kill, dont kill what you wont eat. its called respect.

Doesn't ex-Vice President Cheney like to hunt and live in a multimillion dollar ranch home in Wyoming where no one lives.

    • Posted By: chris s. @ 04/11/2009 5:42:32 PM

Been to Jackson Hole Wyoming? Plenty of people, myself and Cheny included live there, at least partime. Winters are pretty harsh.. Not eveyone there hunts with a gun. For some of us, a camera serves us quite well. You get out in absolutely beautiful country and experience nature without ever firing a shot. It can be done! Also, not everyone in Jackson is a big Cheny fan. Even those liberals Harrison Ford and Gerry Spence live there. You should see the sign that says "Cheny Lane." It's full of bullet holes and usually pretty bent up, everytime I've seen it. No, you cannot see Cheny's place from the road, or on google earth for that matter. It's ok, even he's allowed some privacy. You wouldn't get far before the secret service would stop you anyway. The county probably replaces that sign on a regular basis.

Against Ignorance made the most Ignorant comment in here.. It never ceases to amaze me how some armchair experts always try to tell qualified people how to do their jobs. Most of the comments on this article seem to have come from peta. who thinks that it is alright to kill people to save the rats in the alley. One thing about the Wolves that these peta types don't know is that the wolf will eat humans too. they don't kill their food first. It dies while being eaten. I personally saw it happen lots of times. I live in Wisconsin. A.I. come to wisconsin and take a walk in the forest. (Bring a gun) try to pet a wild wolf and you will need a new arm. These are not the disney characters that you are used to seeing. let the professionals do their jobs. personally I would rather use a rifle than a shotgun. at least from the air.

    • Posted By: SteveStone @ 04/11/2009 8:54:47 AM

In actual fact, in North America there has never been an unprovoked attack on a human by a wolf.

      • Posted By: Pocolodi @ 04/11/2009 9:23:31 AM

Lol.... as if you would know that with certainty.

        • Posted By: 40YearR @ 04/11/2009 4:41:13 PM

I have heard that numerous times, including on science programs about wolves. Wouldn't your post have more credibility if you were to post a link, any link, about any wolf attack?

    • Posted By: chris s. @ 04/11/2009 4:02:33 PM

Who in their right mind would try to pet a wolf, bison, moose or any other wild animal? I live in Oregon and Jackson, Wyoming. We know better and you? Briefly, lived in northwest Wisconsin too. Move into a subdivision if you can't live with nature. Yeah and bring your most important possesion, your gun. You're a dope.

    • Posted By: JarrodT @ 04/11/2009 8:27:17 AM

Your not very wise at all. Only an idiot would try to pet a wild wolf. Or take a walk within the natural food chain. The point is if someone does want to pet a wolf or frolic with a bear. Don't complain about it. Oh yeah sorry for the ungodly sight you witnessed. Next time we will ask the wolves to use silverware and teach them table mannors. Your a retard!!!

  • Posted By: Rigdowntex @ 04/11/2009 4:24:23 PM

You'are wasting my hard earned money. Alaska bought from Mexico?? How about from Russia. You have to be an Obama voter. You haven't a clue about anything especially Alaska. The Alaskans known how to manage and even subsist off of the animals of their state. I'm tired of supporting you welfare idiots. Welfare should not be a career choice either. In 4 more years you may be forced to get a job. Until then back to the mailbox for you. Put the keyboard down and crack a book, you moron

Sarah Palin is an opportunist and a crook! She represents everything wrong with this country, what a national embarrassment.

  • Posted By: Mwalimu @ 04/11/2009 4:01:38 PM

It's ironic that Palin who claims to be a "Christian" is attacking wolves, who come closer than any other animal to embracing traditional, family "Christian" values. Wolves mate for life, albeit in a wolf pack only the alpha male mates with the alpha female. The rest of the wolves in the pack practice abstinence - something that teenagers aren't very good at - judging from the number of unplanned pregnancies in so-called Christian states like Texas and Alaska. In addition, when wolves go out an howl at the moon, that is a sort of church service - canine style. So why gun these animals down.
I suppose the argument is competition for food - but who's doing the competing. The wolves were in Alaska long before Sarah Palin's ancestors showed up. And wolves practice family planning. If there isn't enough food to go around, wolves do not mate. Too bad humans don't follow that exampkle. It's humans that are invading the wolves' back yard. Maybe if humans limited their encroachment of untamed wilderness and maybe if humans in Alaska went vegan, we'd have fewer problems.

Wolves are a menace and should be wiped off the face of the earth. They sould be doing anything and everything to reduce their populations. The people that settled in Alaska had it right they need to be eliminated. They just about had it done were in not for the damn liberal do-gooders in this country re-introducing them. Most people don't even understand what a voracioius predator the wolf is, they are uneducated. The only place you should be able to see a wolf is in a zoo. We shoot them every chance we get regarldess...

    • Posted By: chris s. @ 04/11/2009 3:54:39 PM

Damn those uneducated, do gooder liberals huh? If it weren't for them you could buy all the guns and ammo you want and kill anything that moves. Right?

  • Posted By: LIMPbaugh @ 04/11/2009 10:41:45 AM

This must get the blood pumping for the Southern hicks that must settle for the hunting venu in their areas. These poor "Hunters" must settle for video taping of the feeding areas of their prey for a couple of weeks before the "HUNT". Baiting the areas daily for a month or so before the "HUNT". Then forced to hide in a camofaged tree blind and ambushing their prey with a spray of high powered ammo.

It just doesn't compare with killing a wolf in a snow covered field from an aircraft. That real hunting.

Why not just shoot a goat at a kiddie petting zoo. save a lot of money and get a great rush at the same time.?

    • Posted By: chris s. @ 04/11/2009 3:51:12 PM

Just love the macho men who go on those 'canned hunts.' They spend a fortune so they are guaranteed a head and snout trophy to put on their living room wall. Then say they are the real environmentalists.

  • Posted By: skimos @ 04/11/2009 3:11:47 PM

You people have it all wroing. Last November the people of Alaska VOTED to keep the arial wolf hunting program. Palin is just following the law. Shame on Alaska Lady, if she truly was from Alaska she would know this.

  • Posted By: Animal Law Coalition @ 04/11/2009 2:51:41 PM

Gov. Palin's statement that Alaskans depend on aerial hunting of wolves and decimation of bear populations to preserve caribou and elk is patently ridiculous and disingenuous. The gov is simply trying to build up populations of caribou and moose for toruist hunters who want to be able to claim they hunted and killed a moose. It has nothing to do with subsistence. It's about tourist dollars, profit from grotesque animal cruelty. There is nothing humane or kind about chasing wolves in a helicopter and gunning them down. The animals are terrified, fighting for their lives. Not to mention the fear and suffering inflicted on wolf pups that die from gassing, gasping for breath and in sheer panic. Laura Allen

  • Posted By: JarrodT @ 04/11/2009 8:13:10 AM

Let' s just do the math. There are 6,000 wolves in the lower 48 states and there are 7,000-11,000 in Alaska. So which is 7,000 or 11,000. So let's just say there are 9,000 wolves. The scientist really believe that these wolves have a ditrimental effect to the 300,000's moose and caribou. That's 3:100 wolves to moose and caribou.

The hunters take 1,100 and the state takes 300, that equals 1,400. I'm know scientist, but I don,t see how it is possible for theses wolves to keep up there numbers at all. Especially if there gassing the pups. Who I'm sure are added in to the total population. So they take out 2-4 wolves at time.

America according to my math, we have about ten years left of wolves in Alaska. What's next Bald Eagles??

    • Posted By: keith in alaska @ 04/11/2009 12:08:54 PM

1400 taken each year but 1800 born each year housten we have a problem
as to bald eagles until statehood the feds had a bounty on bald eagles
the state captured and traded eagles to the lower 48 to replace and increase the eagle population there
now that they are restablished there we don't do that any more and our eagle pop is higher than ever. when you visit if you have a little dog keep him on a leash and be with him if not he may disappear and you could get a ticket for unauthorized feeding of wild animals non natural food

  • Posted By: white trash @ 04/11/2009 12:01:42 PM

Trailer, excellent and scientific post! Yep, pet dogs kill more humans every year in USA than wolves, sharks and rattlesnakes combined. Interesting, what lathers many folks up. Yes, today, because of the reintroduction of the wolf, Yellowstone has returned to a complete and stable ecosystem. Wolves were extant in much of the USA until settlers, who believed even wilderness/ecosystems were the devil's own backyard and wolves, the reincarnation of the devil himself. Wolf hate was born, right along with dark ignorance, witch burnings and things that go bump in the night!

  • Posted By: Boka @ 04/11/2009 11:58:02 AM

why would anyone that does not live in that tell the people there what to do. If you don't live there shut up. I wouldn't like someone from another state telling my state what to do. If they want to kill wolves let them. To each his own.
