Obama's kind words had a big impact on world leaders, but do they add up to a foreign policy?

I've got high hopes for President Obama and his foreign (and domestic) policy. I think he is leading the US in a positive direction, and understands that by sharing power in the world with other countries we can be more influential in sharing American values of democracy. The world is interconnected and we need to consider the needs and wisdom from older cultures to create a new world order that will benefit all humanity.

This happened in the 60's and was it reported in the News NO!

From 14:03 until 14:10, the Israeli air assault unleashed hell, concentrating a coordinated strafing attack first of bombs, then of rockets, armor-piercing bullets, and napalm on the ship's communication antennas and crew. Basically these fighters exhausted all of their ordnance and ammunition on a ship they knew could not return fire before they left. (3) page 16 and (4). Israel later confirmed that multiple Mirage fighter-bombers and Dassault Mystyres swept-wing fighters were used, and this was confirmed from photographs taken by Liberty sailors. During the assault, the aircraft jammed all frequencies so the Liberty was only able to communicate during the short intervals when the Israeli rockets were in-flight, as the fighters had to switch off jamming temporarily. (1) page 36. Also during the assault, the American flag was shot away, but before the torpedo attack began, it was replaced with a larger 8x13 foot version. (3) page 19.

Between 14:24 and 14:28, the three torpedo boats arrived in visual range and were reported as flying Israeli flags. (3) page 19 and (1) page 36.

At 14:31, both the USS Liberty and the torpedo boats opened fire at each other. At least five (5) torpedoes were launched, and two (2) torpedoes made contact at about 14:35, and later mechanical analysis revealed one of the torpedoes hit in an area where a few meters in either direction would likely have broken the ship in half. Twenty-five (25) Americans working in the SIGINT section were killed instantly by this torpedo. Following the torpedoes, the Israeli boats raked the USS Liberty with cannon and machine-gun fire, shooting at any visible sailor above deck. At one point, the Israelis concentrated their fire on the boiler, trying to cause an explosion and sink the ship. The torpedo boats were later confirmed to be Ayah class motor torpedo boats, each carrying two (2) torpedoes, and (4) cannons. Before the ship was scrapped, there were 861 holes larger than a man's fist and thousands of 0.50 caliber machine gun holes. (3) pages 19-20, (2) pages 7-8, (1) page 37-38. Same as the fighter attack, basically the Israelis expended all of their ordnance and then just opened up with machine-guns, possibly to keep the sailors from activating a new radio line. They threw everything they had at the USS Liberty, trying to sink a defenseless vessel that they had confirmed to be American.

I have to admit that Scumbama can't find his *** with both hands and a road map. The world now knows what a liar and con artist he is. Taking sh*t don't make it real. When ScumBama gets tested, he'll blink.

Kind words and pleading for peace do not cut it: The 'Worst Possible Approach' to the Taliban
    C. Raja Mohan Posted online: Tuesday , Apr 14, 2009 at 1733 hrs
As Pakistan???s elected representatives meekly surrendered to the extremists in Swat on Monday, a leading American expert on South Asia cautioned the Obama Administration that negotiating with the Taliban could be ???the worst possible approach" towards stabilising Afghanistan.
In a report published by the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace in Washington Monday, Ashley Tellis argued that ???any effort at reconciliation??? with the Taliban will ???undermine the credibility of American power and the success of the Afghan mission.??? At a time when President Barack Obama???s national security team has decided that differentiating between the good Taliban and the bad is the key to progress in Afghanistan, Tellis is making the case for an alternative strategy. In his report titled ???Reconciling with the Taliban???? Tellis warns that engaging the extremists in Afghanistan ???would be the worst approach at this time???and it is destined to fail so long as key Taliban constituents are convinced that military victory in Afghanistan is inevitable.???Imploring the Obama Administration not to panic, Tellis insists that ???reconciling with the Taliban is both premature and unnecessary for the success of Western aims.??? Tellis points to opinion surveys indicating that ???the Afghan public, by an overwhelming margin of 82 per cent to 4 per cent, is still very much opposed to the Taliban???not only viewing them as the country???s biggest threat but also desperately seeking the success that ought to accrue from the presence of Western military forces in their country.???
???Consequently, although the situation in Afghanistan is serious, it is by no means hopeless???and can be retrieved through a concerted modification of current NATO strategy, including a return to proper counter-insurgency operations,??? Tellis adds. Tellis challenges one of the core assumptions of the new US strategy towards Afghanistan???shift from state-building in Afghanistan to mere counter-terrorism against the al-Qaida. He warns that ???Washington cannot fight al-Qaeda and its allies in Afghanistan and Pakistan without supporting the creation of an effective and responsive regime in Kabul.??? -----rm. He therefore affirms that the US ???counterinsurgency effort in Afghanistan cannot come to depend on the fundamental transformation of Pakistan or its behaviors in the near term.??? Tellis concludes that an American --???.???

I am from FYROM. My country neighbors Greece. For my country to survive, I have to stake claim to some history. My country's land was once part of ancient Greece's Macedonian Kingdom. Since the Greek government now calls themselves Greece, and did away with the powerful names of their history and culture (such as Athenians, Spartans, Corinthians, Macedonians), I might as well steal their identity, culture and history by naming my country as Macedonia. If I push lies and propaganda long enough, people will beleive we Slavic peoples were around during Ancient Greece. Let me rewrite history books and teach my young children that Slavs are now Macedonians. The only link I have though is my land. The only possible history I have is some treaty of 1913, which doesnt talk about my people, just the land that was freed to Albania, Greece and Bulgaria from Ottoman Occupation. I know that Ancient Macedonians were Greek, but I have to hide it and lie to the world and my children so I can survive. but at what cost? I commit the largest single cultural and historical genocide since ww2. Macedonia is Greek, but shhh, I wont tell so long as those foolish Western Nations are willing to give me money, so long as I support their energy hungry war campaigns by sending my children. I will remember the reason I sold out my people if something happens to my child. All because we FYROMians are not proud of our Slavic heritage and want to steal a name and identity that doesnt belong to us. I wont tell that Macedonia is Greek if you dont.

" The inhabitants of The FYROM are mostly Slavs, Bulgarians and Albanians. They have nothing in common with the ancient Macedonians. Here are some testimonies from FYROM (Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia) officials:
    a. The former President of The FYROM, Kiro Gligorov said: ???We are Slavs who came to this area in the sixth century ... we are not descendants of the ancient Macedonians" (Foreign Information Service Daily Report, Eastern Europe, February 26, 1992, p. 35).
    b. Also, Mr Gligorov declared: "We are Macedonians but we are Slav Macedonians. That's who we are! We have no connection to Alexander the Greek and his Macedonia??? Our ancestors came here in the 5th and 6th century" (Toronto Star, March 15, 1992).
    c. On 22 January 1999, Ambassador of the FYROM to USA, Ljubica Achevska gave a speech on the present situation in the Balkans. In answering questions at the end of her speech Mrs. Acevshka said: "We do not claim to be descendants of Alexander the Great ??? Greece is Macedonia???s second largest trading partner, and its number one investor. Instead of opting for war, we have chosen the mediation of the United Nations, with talks on the ambassadorial level under Mr. Vance and Mr. Nemitz." In reply to another question about the ethnic origin of the people of FYROM, Ambassador Achevska stated that "we are Slavs and we speak a Slav language.???
    d. On 24 February 1999, in an interview with the Ottawa Citizen, Gyordan Veselinov, FYROM'S Ambassador to Canada, admitted, "We are not related to the northern Greeks who produced leaders like Philip and Alexander the Great. We are a Slav people and our language is closely related to Bulgarian." He also commented, ???There is some confusion about the identity of the people of my country."
    e. Moreover, the Foreign Minister of the FYROM, Slobodan Casule, in an interview to Utrinski Vesnik of Skopje on December 29, 2001, said that he mentioned to the Foreign Minister of Bulgaria, Solomon Pasi, that they "belong to the same Slav people.??? "

President Obama is still fresh to the USA and the world. Everyone worldwide is looking for a powerful leader to be a true world leader. None better than the President of the most powerful nation in the world. Talk is what people need right now. They need comforting and assurance that the world is united, even the strongest power is behind all. This is fine for now. As the year passes and the inauguration and election have completely been forgotten, the world will look for action. Take for example nd as mentioned in this article the case of the name "Macedonia". The world knows history, the world knows that Alexnder the Great was an ancient Greek warrior King. The world knows that Macedonia was just another city-state of what made up Ancient Greece, both geographically, culturally and ethnically, much like Athens, Sparta, Corinth, Trojans, etc... The city-states fought eachother non-stop for centuries. This did not make them any less Greek. A simple rule of thumb, if you wern't Greek, you could not play in the Ancient Olympic Games. And Macedonia did. Anyhow, in this day and age, Macedonia is a region of Greece, actually a province. It has been called so for generations. Tody you have a Slavic people, from when Yugoslavia broke up, wanting to call themselves Macedonian. This may not seem like much to most people, but the problem is that they want to be exclusivly called Macedonian. In other words, no other Macedonians exist, only them. Whats funny is that they are slavic people who migrated to the region in the 6th century AD. Greeks have been Macedonians since before the time of Alexander the Great whom spoke Greek, had Greek parents, father Phillip and mother Olympias. Do those sound like Slavic names? So because only a small percentage of their land rests on what used to be Ancient Greek Macedonia, they are now staking claim to everything Macedonian, including the identity, history, heritage, culture, etc... This is historical and cultural genocide and the edcated world sees this. To top things off, they now think that Greece has stolen their land. Yes, Macedonia the Greek province, which has always been Greek for thousands of years, is now all of a sudden stolen from Slavic people who came to the area in the 600AD. So here comes Greece's argument, that they are slowly raising claims to take Greek land, hence irrendentism at its best. So propoganda and irredentism by FYROMians. Obama knows this and has signed Senate Resolution 300 supporting the solution to the name row, but FYROM has no plans. The truth lies in history and anyone can find it in any library, university in the world. Macedonia is Greece. Macedonians are Greeks.

"Respect for others crosses most all divides, cultural or other."

Yeah, you're right! We should respect the Iranian government that takes our civilians hostage, attacks our military in other countries, openly calls for our destruction and the destruction of our staunch allies. Clearly that's the best course. We should respect the North Korean government that has developed nuclear warheads that can reach our shore. We should respect Russia, who is allying with both of these powers (along with another outspoken crazy US critic, Venezuela) and which has over 100 years of politics-driven genocide to its credit.

This is why you liberals should never be in power. You are children. You are so naive and gullible and foolish that you really believe talking to evil people will sort things out. Obambi is just the new Jimmy Carter, and like every Democrat president he will have the media carrying his water and gullible morons like you cheering his every inept move until he runs out of terms or something blows up, then a Republican will have to come in and clean up his mess.

I need to print a retraction or a clarification to the remarks I just posted. I retired two years ago after spending a lifetime teaching in an inner city high school. A lot of the teenagers I taught, for all ther immaturity, were actually for more mature that Freedman, Ccryder, whala, or any of Obama's chattering class critics. Again, people, grow up.

  • Posted By: Mwalimu @ 04/12/2009 11:25:48 AM

This article once again reveals the moral and intellectual bankruptcy of Obama's critics. Obama himself never even pretended that his "kind words" would be an instant solution to the world's problems. Obama, more than any one else, recognizes the work that is ahead of him.
Basically, Freedman, and Obama's critics are jealous. Obama has won the respect of the world. It's a far cry from Bush, whose policies simply made all bad situations that much worse. Freedman and his critics are acting like the immature teenagers I spent a life time trying to educate. Like teenagers, Freedamn and his chattering class colleagues want instant gratification. If they don't get it, they have temper tantrums and hissy fits.
Obama has consistently made it clear that it will take years of hard work, including a lot of set backs, to achieve his goals. Obama seems to be the only adult in a nation of spoiled-brat Yalie frat boys. To Freedman, the CCryder, to whala, I've two word of advice" GROW UP!!!!

What silliness. Of course Obama shouldn't try to be the world's therapist, but it is ridiculous to imply that he is trying to be. However, acknowledging someone else's history, focusing on the positive, and being a respectful guest are the hallmarks of diplomacy, and we have a lot of baggage left over from the Bush/Cheney days of arrogance and disrespect.

Obama is a smart man - remember, his roots are in rough and tumble Chicago south side politics, in the trenches of community organizing, where people have deep suspicions and long memories - the first and most important goal is to get everybody to leave their guns at the door so they can at least sit at the same table. It ain't easy in Chicago, and it ain't easy in Turkey or Russia, and nothing happens quickly.

He lose nothing by starting off with a smile and a handshake, because everybody knows the real deals come later, but it starts with the goodwill you produce at the beginning.

No, he isn't the world's therapist - he's the world's community organizer. And he's damn good at it.

Now they have senate, house, and the president, and things have gone from bad to worse. That is why website like www.democratsareajoke.com and all the tea parties are springing up.

Newage_lightbulb is a bit dim. Quit whining and whimpering about liberals. I had to sit back and watch what conservative principles did to our country over the last 8 years and like me a majority of Americans think your Republican party screwed things up BIG TIME. So quite whining and whimpering. Your republican party is going to be wandering the dunes for years to come in the minority. How can any political party with a philosophy that government doesn't work be trusted to run government? Well, you won't be able to truly contemplate that answer because your mind is so poisoned and your narrow world so marginally reinforced by the retail hate your conservative blowhard noisemakers make on a daily basis. Get use to liberals, liberal ideas, activist government, and progress, cause your party's ideas and "morals" are dead and your party's leaders are a ship of fools.

yeah....apologizing for america being the greatest country in the world and stepping up and doing what is best for the rest of the world is a great plan....maybe we should just pull all of our troops back from their stations all over the world and lets see how quickly they call for us to be back...it would not take very long at all.

I have to salute Mr. Obama's willingness to listen to others.

Respect crosses most divides, especially cultural ones in fact. It seemed that in our not so distant past it had to be "our way or the highway". We now have a leader that is intelligent enough to understand the importance of both respect and the knowledge of other peoples that are different than our selves. The nations of the World have taken notice that they will be listened too and shown respect. I predict that our security will be enhanced by the ability of our nation to work with others, while at the same time remaining militarilty strong.
