Every time I read Fareed Zakaria I get less impressed. The superficial analysis in this piece is laughable. Case in point: the United States has 11 carrier battle groups and the Chinese 0, the clear implication that this is absurdly lopsided. It appears that it never occurred to Mr. Zakaria that the Chinese are a lot closer to Taiwan than we are and can bring formidable LAND based airpower to bear while we have to rely on carrier based forces. I???m in the military, and I???m a reformer, but I want this guy off my side.
The problems with cost overruns have as much to do, and maybe more to do, with the procurement process in the government than anything else. We???re required to purchase from GSA sources for the most mundane items (paper & pencils) when I can walk into the local Walmart or Target and pick up the same items for 1/3 the price.
As for Secretary Gates, he is on to something, but I worry that he???s suffers as much from ???This war-itis??? as his opponents are afflicted with ???next war-itis???. His contradictory statements as of late on the status of 5th generation fighters being built by other countries make me worry that he???s entirely budget driven or more concerned with winning political fights in the Pentagon than real capabilities. If we are apparently willing to drive yearly deficits way past $1 trillion, can???t room be made for 60 more F-22???s to hedge our bets on future air superiority?
