THERE'S NEEDS TO BE A COMPLETE AND TOTAL BAN ON ASSAULT WEAPONS.

    1. YOU ARE MORE LIKELY TO HURT OR KILL YOURSELF OR A LOVED ONE. THE RATIO ISN'T EVEN CLOSE

    2. OUR FOUNDING FATHERS DID NOT WRITE THE SECOND AMENDMENT FOR THE NRA. I BELIEVE THEM TO BE VERY PRAGMATIC AND INTELLIGENT MEN. THERE IS NO WAY THEY WOULD BE FOR THIS INANE, ASININE REASONING OF SUCH MASS GUN OWNERSHIP IN TODAY'S AGE. THE NRA WILL NOT BE HAPPY UNTIL EVERYONE IS ARMED AND HAVING GUN FIGHTS IN THE STREET. THERE IS NO REASON FOR THEM TO BE AGAINST LEGISLATION THAT HELPS POLICE TRACK WEAPONS-NONE-WHATSOEVER. THESE ARE SICK PEOPLE.

    3. THERE OUR COUNTRIES WITH COMPLETE GUN BANS, THEY BARELY HAVE ANY GUN DEATHS AND IN SOME COUNTRIES, THOSE SAME PLACES -THE POLICE WALK AROUND WITHOUT WEAPONS.

    4. THE EASE OF GETTING A GUN FOR THE MOST VILE LUNATIC IS INCREDIBLE. HOW MANY TIMES DO WE HAVE TO SEE A NUT JOB GO INTO A GUN SHOW AND LEAVE WITH A GUN. THEY HAD A SPECIAL, I BELIEVE ON CNN OR SOMETHING WHERE GUYS WERE GOING IN AND CONVINCING DEALERS TO SELL THEM GUNS EVENTHOUGH THEY HAD RECORDS AND WERE CLEARLY ACTING DELUSIONAL.

    5. WHAT THE HELL DO YOU NEED A AR-15 FOR? WHY ARE PEOPLE WHO LIVE IN GATED COMMUNTITES, ALMOST AROUND NO ONE-HAVE THE MOST GUNS? THE ONLY TIME THEY SEE VIOLENCE IS ON TELEVSION.

Hey moron, you think the criminals go to gun shows and gun shops? Stop breeding, your ruining the gene pool!!!

Banning Assault Weapons will not eliminate them. Criminals will always have guns. Banning drugs hasn't stopped the flow of drugs into our country. Very few murders less than 1% are commited with assault weapons meaning about one-hundred and sixtypeople a year are killed by assault weapons. The other 15840 are murdered with other weapons, handguns, knives, clubs, hands and feet etc...

Do you have any facts to back up your claim that the Mexican drug cartels get their weapons from the U.S.? Since fully automatic weapons are nearly impossible for the average citizen to obtain, I highly doubt that the drug cartels are getting theirs from anybody north of the border. Can you please post some facts to back up your statement?

  • Posted By: 002233109 @ 04/14/2009 11:26:45 AM

part of the arguement is that Mexican drug cartels are arming themselves with guns smuggled from the US....So in mexico the posession of these is illegal....and yet only the drug lords have the weapons...So the Us should do the same and ban them...which will mean only the criminals will have them. We do need better followup for the law abiding citizens to keep these whack jobs from getting their hands on them. But if they really want them they will get them regardless of the law

Taking away our rights to buy guns won't stop criminals, they don't go to gun shops, morons!!

  • Posted By: Jimitee @ 04/12/2009 1:45:54 AM

I am clearly a left of center guy that loves Huffington Post and loves my rights under the 2nd amendment.I know that their are people that should not own guns. The majority of the guns owned illegally are by the criminals. We all need to protect ourselves from the element that would do us harm. The police are ten minutes away. My gun is 15 seconds away. Imagine if there were more responsible citizens with concealed carry permits and the training to use a weapon in places where all this mass killings have taken place. I am not saying that everyone should own a gun but I am greatful to the resposible and well trained gun owners that would be there to protect my family when the bad guys arrive.

    • Posted By: LIMPbaugh @ 04/14/2009 11:07:45 AM

Forget the mass killings, no one could have predicted most of them. i carry with a permit because I've accidently wandered down the wrong street with my family in the car and was lucky nothing happened. Now being armed is second nature because of the unemployement issues and violentrobberies have risen. I'm not a cowboy and alway would look for an escape route before defending myself. The fact that gangs with hundreds of members have managed to prosper highlights the ineffectiveness of the police. the cops are responsive but not preventative. I love them but I'm also going to try to defend myself if i need to.

I humbly disagree with you. The times I have felt most unsafe, were times when a gun was present. The thought that a gun will keep you safer is more often untrue than true. The belief that your gun will not fall into the hands of a depressed relative, child, or burglar may not hold true. I would much prefer to live in a country with only very restricted gun ownership (like the majority of countries in this world). I don't trust you to keep your gun safe (I knew a responsible police officer whose guns were stolen from a locked case). I don't trust that the enraged driver behind me won't pull out a gun and shoot me for something that offended him. I don't trust that my teenage daughter, if she found herself despondent, wouldn't choose to use a gun (were it available) in a moment of frailty. I guess the bottom line for me is that people are imperfect and not always predictable. The fewer guns around the better.

"I would much prefer to live in a country with only very restricted gun ownership"
To the best of my knowledge, the Exit Door is wide open, awaiting your departure.
Maybe you should move to Switzerland......no...wait...."all males aged 20 to 42 are required by militia system regulation to keep rifles and/or pistols at home". Maybe this contributes to their extremely low crime rate. Hitler even chose not to invade Switzerland for this reason..."the Nazi invasion plans, which stated that, because of the Swiss shooting skills, Switzerland would be difficult to conquer and pacify." Learn from world history what works and what doesn't.

Add to that, not one single ban of civillian arms ever turned out well. Not ONE!

The only way to stop a person with a gunm is another person with a gun; it's just that simple.

That which created me also created my natural right to self-defense and life at the very samne moment.

      • Posted By: Osama Bin Login @ 04/13/2009 10:10:37 AM

I don't have to justify my right to own firearms. Madison did that for me.

        • Posted By: Dimensio @ 04/13/2009 12:09:29 PM

Your inability to trust others is a psychological problem that you should address, and not a rational justification for infringing upon the fundamental rights of others.

New York City has the most restrictive gun laws in the country yet anyone can go on the streets and buy an illegal gun almost as fast as they can buy illegal cocaine or illegal heroin. Do you really think additional feel good gun laws will change anything as far as illegal weapons are concerned? Sweet dreams,

  • Posted By: panick @ 04/11/2009 5:38:01 PM

First: Gun control laws are ignored by criminals. They protect nobody.

Second: it always seems that the democrats want to ignore the last fourteen words of the second amendments while the republicans want to ignore the first 13. It's all inclusive. The founding fathers realized that at some point it might become necessary to fight a battle or a war against the government they had created. Thus they gave every citizen the right to bear arms ("the right of the people to keep and bear arms, shall not be infringed."), and gave individual states the right to maintain militias ("A well regulated militia being necessary to the security of a free state"). We do both today. Just because a few nuts take off and kill a few people is no reason for us to restrict the second amendment. The people that want to break the law aren't going to pay attention to it anyway. In fact, criminals love gun control laws because they only restrict those who are trying to stay within them.

I am a Democrat and believe in 2nd Amendment rights. Get your facts straight.

So much disinformation in this article that it's sickening. Doesn't Newsweek bother to check their facts before they publish this rubbish?

    • Posted By: LIMPbaugh @ 04/14/2009 11:02:03 AM

No, Newsweek just throws out hot button issues to build their readership and agitation is the tool to do so.

  • Posted By: abomb60 @ 04/14/2009 10:56:26 AM

We should probably pass laws on banning killing. Oh wait ... we have that law. There is so much disinformation here it's sickening. I wish the media had to check facts before they published this garbage.

  • Posted By: mlbuie @ 04/14/2009 10:51:01 AM

Keep tag on ciriminals and malcontents like this nazi redneck. Don't take guns away or restrict guns for law-abiding folk. Creating laws to restrict guns only strengthens cirminals position. Take all the steps you need to deter criminals from guns as long as you don't infringe on my 2nd Amendment right.

I voted for Obama and was glad to see Hillary come into the Administration, too. But, if they work to take away my right to defend myself and my family, to won a gun,I will vote with the wave of Americans who will remove them from office.

Obama, I'm with you until you take away or weaken my 2nd amendment right.

    • Posted By: LIMPbaugh @ 04/14/2009 10:56:15 AM

Absolutely. right on. Liek President Obama and the vast majority of the senate doesn't know that to be the case.

  • Posted By: jamesmcmichael @ 04/14/2009 10:52:04 AM

There is NO gunshow loophole and Mexican thugs are NOT buying fully automatic guns in the US and smuggling them into Mexico. In case you do not know it, fully automatic "assault" rifles are not legal/available in US gun stores. They do NOT exist for sale. The confiscated weapons in Mexico are invariably fully automatic; they did NOT come from the US. Period.
Get your facts straight before you write any more of the nonsense.

    The
big news from yesterday (still settling in across Washington) is that
President Obama and Defense Secretary Robert Gates teamed up to propose
a sweeping overhaul of the defense budget--calling for the elimination
of unnecessary systems and spending the savings on special forces,
intelligence equipment, and other tools of counterinsurgent warfare.

In other words, by retooling the Pentagon, Obama and Gates plan to
move a lot of money around, but they also plan to increase the overall
defense budget. In the final year of the Bush administration (and
excluding the costs of the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan) the defense
budget was $513 billion. In FY 2010, if Gates and Obama get their way, it will be $534 billion--$534 billion that will be spent much differently than last year's outlays were.

But you'd never know that from the news coverage.

    • Posted By: LIMPbaugh @ 04/14/2009 10:48:31 AM

And when our country is at risk, the Republicans run in the other direction.

  • Posted By: Outraged_Patriot @ 04/14/2009 10:40:02 AM

There is NO GUN SHOW LOOPHOLE. Gun transfers and purchases are REAQUIRED by FEDERAL LAW to be done by a licensed dealer. Stop believing the hype about the "Gun Show Loophole".

There is lots of data that the vast majority of gun crimes are committed with stolen guns. To anybody who know anything about manufacturing, it's clear that a crude gun is not hard to make. The recent multiple shootings are spectacular, and tragic, but a small blib in the thousands of people killed by all forms of violence every year.
And bans on crank and crack haven't stopped those scourages, bans on drunk driving haven't stopped drunk driving. And there are no legitimate uses for crank nor drunk driving. Passing any sort of weapons restriction would be "security theater" - it would not actually do anything.
You want less violence (who doesn't?) You must address the root causes of violence. And start with the large volume that statistically matters, rather than the spectacular incidents.

ICE DC you have it wrong in a gun show any person can sell their personal weapon to any other person without a background check now you are supposed to follow some guide lines but the are not laws and are not enforced guidelines are as follow your supposed to check the id of the person because you can not sell a handgun to anyone that is not from your state so im in TN i can not go to a gun show in KY even though i live 4 miles from the border but i dont look 18 nor 21 so i have never been carded and your supposed to keep track of who you sell the gun to but its not mandatory now there are some states where the law changes but in most souther states it very easy to get a gun/semi automatic weapon now on the full auto yes there are very strick rules (federal laws) that you have to follow but its as easy as getting a trust or starting your own corporation to buys these weapons they will hit the pocket book for some money i think an ak its like 6500.00 AR15 / M-4 its like 12000.00 so its not cheap but for the drug cartels its worth every penny sad please read your own laws for your state i personally own all kinds of guns and it bothers me when people do thing that can ultimately affect me because of some crazy guy we are not all crazy as for obama he was the senator of one of the most strict gun laws of the country ILL you have to get a foid card just to buy a handgun you can never carry or travel with yet the gang bangers in chicago where i grew up do what ever they want and its never stopped them from getting weapons

    • Posted By: IcedC @ 04/14/2009 10:02:51 AM

Yes the loop hole changes from state to state, I should have been more specific. I live in MD and you pretty much cannot transfer a regulated weapon anywhere without government involvement
