I never thought I would find out our government tortures people. We had so many soldiers die in WWII to stop this sort of thing. We agreed to the Geneva Conventions. They distorted the meaning and violated them. The truth is we torture people in the gulags we have in this country. They are put in dangerous conditions, denied health care, treated cruelly by corrections officers, denied civil rights(such as the 8th amendment) and many are innocent or should have never gone to prison in the first place.

Citizens of the world unite! You have only your own corrupt government (police) to lose!

Shame, shame, shame on you, Newsweek. How dare you compare the "torture"/interrogation of the America-hating terrorists to the Nazis or Sierre Leone. These are people that would like to cut off your head or kill your children without blinking an eye. BooHoo that they were made uncomfortable. I am sure that the people who survived the planned attack on Los Angeles might realize that we are the good guys and sometimes dealing with evil people requires more than just a sit-down heart-to-heart chat. Newsweek, get some perspective.

Do you condone the threats of rape against prisoners at Abu Ghraib? I thought that, whatever else might happen, conservativism was generally very vehemently against that practice in all its forms all across the world.

Suppose there was threats of rape in Abu Gharaib. Do you know how many threats of rapes are practiced in the prisons of State you live in? Do you know how many prisonor mistreatments are conducted by the prison guards in the united states? So what do you suggest? Dismantle all the prisons in the united states? or prosecute many prison wardens and prison guards? Did you ever follow the news that all gurds that were some how involved in misbeaviour in Iraq were actually prosecuted and some who were found guilty actually punished?

People who support these techniques love to speculate that it "could" save American lives. We don't need speculation to know that terrorists are using the Abu Ghraib photos and the simple fact that we are torturing people to recruit even more terrorists who will go out and try to kill more Americans. So for all the "If torture could save one American life" people, if stopping torture would save American lives would you support it? So whats it going to be? Emotion? or Reason?

I look forward to Newsweek going financially bankrupt since they are already morally bankrupt. This rag isn't even good enough to be toilet paper in my house. I fought for your rights and freedoms and you betray this country at every turn. When you are ouot of business, I will dance and whizz on your last issue because you are a disgrace to this country. Stupid liberals!

To those who support torture: remember that we also tortured people who were factually innocent, like Maher Arar and Murat Kurnaz. Do you support the torture of the innocent? After all, if someone isn't providing the information you want, another waterboard session is in order, right?

I noticed you conveniently forgot IMPERIAL JAPAN.
They're still denying atrocities they committed in WWII.
You could devote and entire issue to their behavior and denial of war crimes.

I guess you folks get a lot of revenue from Japanese Companies.

You'd need a bigger site than Newsweek to catalogue the various forms of torture used by all the various civilizations in the human race. You could add China and North Korea to Japan's famous atrocities (like the Rape of Nanking) without breaking a sweat. Notably missing from the discussion about us is the use of waterboarding and other techniques a hundred years ago in the Phillippines during the Spanish-American War, which shares a lot of similarity to Iraq - expansionist mentality, use of dubious interrogation tactics, and a newspaper magnate behind the scenes promoting the war to sell papers. (Murdoch seems to have learned quite a bit from studying William Randolph Hearst's playbook.) Go back further and you can find the Spanish Inquisition using the medieval Christian torture tactics into the 17th century and beyond, Aztecs and Mayans practicing ritual torture in religious ceremonies, Puritans all over the place back in the 15th and 16th centuries relying heavily on the stockade - a man or woman commits a minor crime and is locked in the stockade for a day, no big deal, right? Except that it was kind of customary for the rest of the citizenry to crowd around and have a good jeer, and throw overripe fruit, and also rocks, and bricks, so that you could tend to count on leaving the stockade disfigured no matter how minor your crime was.

And it goes back to prehistory like this in various incarnations. It's not a subject to enlighten the human soul. Punishment over human history has almost always drastically outweighed the crime, no matter what people claim.

ooooh, is it cold up there on your high horse?

there are many things they missed out not just Japanese atrocities, this article was never intended to be a comprehensive study of all global tyranny, just to give some poignant examples from around the world. Take off your tin hat and relax, there isn't always a conspiracy.

Torture, people we were attacked by individuals who will do anything to distroy
our country, not to mention our way of life. These individuals needed to be stopped.
If it ment making them think that they were going to die, so be it. If it is thought
by the terrorist(s) that they can attack the United States of America without the risk of
reprisals the arracks would be more frequent. I salute the men and women
protecting our country and the freedoms so many of us take for granted. Our enemies
needs to realize that as the old addage states: You play with fire you will get burned.
The so called waterbord treatment, saved American's lives. To you bleeding hearts
who comdem the tactic, it may have saved one of your loved ones life.

God Bless The United States of America
