I agree wtih BG.Bryan and others here. I would have more respect for him if he stayed in the background and concentrated on rebuilding his family. No, he is out there with the mia cupla b/s and let???s forgive and forget and let me just get back to a power position again. He is a pathetic excuse for a man and leader who betrayed more than just his family. I hope the public does not allow him to buy his way back.

I am one of those folks who really doesn't care about a public leader/official's sex life--I prefer base my opinion on their actions as related to the performance of their duties. However, it is the hypocrisy factor that comes into play here. Spitzer built his brilliant career in large part on his reputation as an incorruptible and untainted public official--therefore his illgal sexual activities (and they were illegal due to the use of paid prostitutes, not just an extra-marital affair) compromised him. It would make me a hypocrite if I were to excuse his behavior if I were to excuse him, while condemning the actions of Craig, Foley, Haggerty, et.al. I'm sure we Dems can bring forward other's without these flaws to take Spitzer's place--he was given his shot and blew it. The only positive in his handling of it: he resigned

It's not the sex aspect but the incredible hypocrisy of busting call girls while being serviced himself! THAT is the unforgivable part. I am amazed the author left this most important fact out.
REPEAT-This Spitzer guy was PROSECUTING CALL GIRLS, hurting these women, devastating these women's lives AND USING their sex services himself. Keep this FACT in mind.
If not for him PROSECUTING Call Girls his having sex with prostitutes is none of my business. Should be legal anyway between consenting adults.
How come you prosecuted these girls Eliot and yet being serviced eh?

What I don't get is why only Democrats have to resign or be impeached because of a sex scandal. What about Senator Vitter or Larry Craig? Vitter is still in the Senate and Larry Craig merely served out his term and didn't run again. I'd take Eliot Spitzer over either of them any day.

What colossal nonsense. Eliot Spitzer is a sex addict, pure and simple, in total denial, just like Bill Clinton. He can talk all he wants about what he's done to his family, about accepting responsibility, blah, blah, blah. Unless and until he admits that he is an addict and gets treatment for his problem, he will not get better; he will repeat the behavior or worse, and continue to hurt his loved ones, others and himself.

"Sex Addiction can involve a wide variety of practices. Sometimes an addict has trouble with just one unwanted behavior, sometimes with many. A large number of sex addicts say their unhealthy use of sex has been a progressive process. It may have started with an addiction to masturbation, pornography (either printed or electronic), or a relationship, but over the years progressed to increasingly dangerous behaviors.

The essence of all addiction is the addicts' experience of powerlessness over a compulsive behavior, resulting in their lives becoming unmanageable. The addict is out of control and experiences tremendous shame, pain and self-loathing. The addict may wish to stop --- yet repeatedly fails to do so. The unmanageability of addicts' lives can be seen in the consequences they suffer: losing relationships, difficulties with work, arrests, financial troubles, a loss of interest in things not sexual, low self-esteem and despair.

Sexual preoccupation takes up tremendous amounts of energy. As this increases for the sex addict, a pattern of behavior (or rituals) follows, which usually leads to acting out (for some it is flirting, searching the net for pornography, or driving to the park.) When the acting out happens, there is a denial of feelings usually followed by despair and shame or a feeling of hopelessness and confusion. "

I thought there were patient confidentiality laws? Obviously to make such a firm diagnosis you must be a licensed therapist personally treating this person.

The man did the crime, he paid for it. What happens now is between him, his family and his god. We need to keep our noses out of his mess.

      • Posted By: mac101 @ 04/19/2009 9:31:38 PM

Paying for his crime isn't the issue since they chose not to prosecute - learning from his mistakes is the issue - and from where I stand, he has done neither. And confidentiality is rather moot for someone who played out his private life on such a public stage.

And the most salient point is that there is no licensed therapist diagnosing or treating this man - unfortunately for both he and his family.

He may have been a hack of a governor but seriously, politicians have been doing this and worse for time immorium. Now it is public domaine for the press to splash their personal misdeeds all over the medias. Enough already the guy is a ***, congradulations!! Who really cares?

Eliot Spitzer is among the most influential legal minds and politicians in New York state history. The work he did as AG is studied in law schools, he was simply brilliant and did enormous good. He was, at minimum, the best AG this state has ever had. He cared passionately about keeping its institutions stong, honest and accountable to the people. We here in NY miss having a fearless, talented advocate like him to take on the powerful in our name. He took on all comers and won. He is an utterly wasted asset right now and I wish he'd run again tomorrow. So does everyone I know.

However - this will be tricky for him. I was a bit disappointed with his answer about the potential for being indicted and his talk of sexual mores of other countries. This is not the right track for him to go down with these sorts of questions. If it was just an affair, it would be a no brainer and noone's business. But he did break the law, and while I care not a whit, it isn't a small hurdle for him, not should he dismiss that component. He should include an apology for that part in his comeback.

That said, I wish I could work for his campaign. He's not exactly a backslapper, but he highly effective - a badass progressive and we don't have enough of those.

paule......where does your anger stem from? Where do you get off attempting to judge this man? Who in the world ever told you that your uneducated opinion had merit when you show no wound? Do you want someone telling you who you can sleep with? He paid the price but according to your post we should continue to beat this man? LOL Look in the mirror and tell that man that he has never made a mistake and hope that God isn't watching and hearing the lie.

  • Posted By: Bulldoglover100 @ 04/19/2009 3:08:26 PM

Oh...so now it is confirmed that the uneducated read Newsweek too. Interesting really the anger that so many display against this man...when one knows that no one is without sin. They throw stones like they will never have to stand before God. Uneducated can be the only answer as to why they assume their opinions are relevant when their only basis is anger. What harm did he actually do tho them? He harmed his family and was disappointing the public but such anger when no harm no foul was directed towards some of these people.
I hope he goes forward and helps this country as he is capable of doing. Yes he is a politican and as such some people did not like his approach or the fact he came from a monied family (again?????) but he did get the job done and he did so in a way that protected the public from the very institutions that have created this economic crisis and who he slept with? has no bearing on his ability. Give him a break and give us the chance to reap the benefit of his ability.

Could it have been NSA data minibng, and not bank scrutiny that caught the eye of the FBI? That is the question not asked that begs an answer.
