I love this article. It is great to find someone who understands why I bought every episode of the original Star Trek and
still watch them on a regular basis even though I know them by heart. Thanks you so much. I also love the comparison
of President Obama to Mr. Spoke. They are both incredible and so is Newsweek. I look forward to every issue. It is
the only magazine I buy. Thank you so much for this article. It is wonderful. It's funny, inciteful and brings back so many
memories. From one old Trekkie to another -Live Long And Prosper.

Perfect Comment!! I LOVED the article, too! And could not have said it better myself.....
You Bush Lovers need to back off....this is NOT YOUR MOVIE! It's ours! And so is Newsweek.

I have been a hard core Trekkie since the beginning. II loved the article, but I think it was out of place. And the gremlin who thought it was funny to diivide the Star Wars and Star Trek characters into Bushies and Obama people should have been strangled at birth. Poor taste.
If you want to do a special issue on ST, STNG, DS9 etc. I will buy it. Untill then, stick to the news.

I just cancelled our two business subscription to Newsweek. The layout you had showing George Bush and all of his administration as the evil forces in the world including labeling Barbara Bush as "Mama Evil" and Barrak Obama and his administration as all of the heros - was the last straw. So juvenile it is sickening. Remember how you used to deride folks for seeing things in "black and white" only? Objective, sober journalisim died in this issue of Newsweek. Good luck hanging on...

I understand that blogs have been outlawed by the Star Trek Federation in the late 22nd-early 23rd century. Live long and prosper, enjoy the film and leave the cognitive current events in the lobby:))

All I wanted to do was read a story about the upcoming Star Trek movie, not a slobber fest over Barack Obama. It's obvious the author is neither a fan or understands the philosophy behind Star Trek. What is obvious is that the author is deeply in love with Obama. If Star Trek truly was like the current administration no one would have watched.

  • Posted By: rightleg @ 04/29/2009 2:31:27 PM

So we can't have an article about Star Trek without Obama being praised and slobbered over and Bush bashed as always? I'm glad I don't read Newsweek anymore. Gee, who are you going to gush over when the country is in ruins and Obama loses popularity? Why don't you compare Spock with Christ--someone who deserves our adulation.

It is beyond believe how the media.. and newsweek can not stop talking about the "the one who came from the clouds", not even when they are supposedly doing an analisys... Then what are we supposed to expect.? the media is supposed to be looking at those with power over the rest of us with criticical eyes. Apparently they are not doing that anymore.. the media, and newsweek are just in the process of enchanment, no criticial or logical analysis .. just plain indoctrination... Then.. god help us all...!!

Aren't we iinsulting the Messiah, merely comparing him to Spock? I thought he was the second coming? Oh well... to the matter at hand.

I grew up with the original series in the 60's. Still think it's the best of all the franchise. Loved the optimistic view of the future. What so many pollyanish Trekkers and the author forget is that while the Prime Directive was all well and good, there were times when one Captain recognised that you had to step in and slit a few throats (the no invasion of Iraq analogy just don't hold up!) KIRK RULES!!!!

JJ. Abrams is more suited for the "hegemonic Bush administration" and NOT for Star Trek. His other shows fit in perfectly with "24" and the pro-torture agenda. He is NOT the man for Star Trek and I fear for Gene's creation with this guy at the helm. http://trekkies.againsttorture.com has a message for Abrams, but he doesn't have the nerve to respond.

ps - re-casting Captain Kirk has to rank up their with the all-time stupid idea of picking Sarah Palin as a VP candidate!

Newsweek missed the boat once again in informing America. Trek vs swine flue? Galactic masturbation as the world population and US citizens catch the swine flu. Confirmed cases in New York, California, Kansas, Texas, and who knows where else. Newsweek along with the current government has kept silent. No calls for schools to close or people to stop gathering at shopping malls. Does CNBC own Newsweek or is the media controlled by Obama love? The Government and our so called reps in the media should have placed the people first, Newsweek put Hollywood first and the government puts the economy first and the people second. If I have learned two things this week it is the Mexican Government is more competent than the Obama government and that Newsweek is no different than the Hollywood reporter.

As a 2nd generation Trekkie and a 1st Next Generation Trekker, It pleases me beyond all satisfaction that Star Trek is returning back to the pop cultural iconic status it has enjoyed for decades. My father being a 1st generation Trekkie, he passed on his love of Star Trek to me at 4 years old. I was there for the Next Generation, DS9, Voyager, and Enterprise. While I understand the old school fans anger, as Spock would say, "Its not logical."

Star Trek was never about conservatism or tradition. It was always about bucking the trend and always looking foward to the future but being mindful of the past and keeping some of the elements of conservatism. The very progressive Trek dialogue has always rung true. As James Kirk has always said, "Risk. Risk is our business. That's what this starship is all about. Thats why we're aboard her." Kirk also said in Star Trek III, "Now, Mr. Scott. Young minds, fresh ideas. Be tolerant." Crewmen came and left. Spock died and was reborn. A next generation came and went. Life goes on.

The 1966-1969 vision of the future has held for over 40 years. That vision logically had to change as progress and concepts of the future change. This was definitely the time to embrace change and re-imagine Gene Roddenberry vision of the future. Just as Zorro, Don Quixote, Batman, Superman, King Arthur, and many others have been reborn to be retold to future generations, Star Trek has embraced re-invention as a necessity to survival. With all due respect, William Shatner could only take James T. Kirk so far and Leonard Nimoy could only carry Spock so far.

I really do think that DeForest Kelley and James Doohan would have liked to see Star Trek prosper and be reborn. They don't ever strike me as individuals who wanted to stay famous for being famous sake. I'm just hope the new generations will embrace Star Trek and its ideals as previous generations have. I don't expect it to be a Dark Knight embrace, whatever the level next to that is, I would gladly accept for Star Trek.

So beam me up again. I'm ready to take the Center Seat. Just one word. Engage!

SO SORRY FOR THE TRIPPLE POST!!

I LOVE this Article! VERY Well written. I am a HARD CORE Trekkie/Trekker (Which ever you wanna call us. I'm one either way) I also grew up on Star Trek TOS (The Original Series) Even though they were Re-runs (I'm only 21, people! Born in 1987) And I can honestly say, Star Trek Generation, Deep Space Nine and Voyager had NOTHING on the 1960's Star Trek series and the FIRST Theatrical films featuring the original cast members. No, Perhaps there wasn't as much TECHNOLOGY as there is now days, but the affects were AMAZING for that time, and the Story itself is truly priceles. I PROMISE Had I had lived back in the 60's, I would have been just as much of a fan and owned every toy, tee shirt and bumper sticker available. I can see where some people believe Obama is like Spock. There are things they have in common, but I have to also say I'm a HARD CORE REPUBLICAN (Yes.. Republicans can be Trekkies too) So in a word I just wanna say "OMG Don't Compare poor Spock to HIM!!" lol But hey, that's just one Trek-fan's opinion. I want to also add that I agree however, that the past Sci Fi Films have indeed been more about the "Rise of evil" It's nice to see a film where we dwell more on the "Good side" and not just the Dark side of the "Force" if you will (lol) I am slightly skeptical (As many fans are going to be) on the casting of this new Revamped TOS Themed film. I mean.. SIMON PEGG as Scotty? But I will with hold my critiques at least until I see the film on opening day. It is REALLY Unfair and "Illogical" to ask that the casting directors find us a "Clone Like" cast. There is no other Shatner, Nimoy and Kelley in the world and that is just THAT. But it IS Fair that we ask for the "Next to best deal" as possible. I have seen past "Re-makes" and "Book to film adaptions" And giving hard core critique BEFORE Seeing them, then gone to see them and had that certain "Open mouth, Insert foot" felling come over me, because I was pleasantly surprised and then had to admit to all my family and Friends that I was "Wrong." I honestly (So far, from seeing screen captures and previews) Think that Karl Urban may even give Zachary Quinto a run for his money in the role of "Bones." I was at first skeptical of him being chosen for the part. (Kept thinking of him as Eomiir in Lord of the Rings lol) But after seeing him AS McCoy in many previews I do believe that he might just pull it off (And then some) And So I will be seeing this film with the up most of Optimism and excitement! Dressed in FULL Trekkie Attire! Here is a Link to how I plan to be dressed for the film premier! http://princess-kraehe.deviantart.com/art/Portrait-of-a-Vulcan-Girl-119204167 (And yes. That's me.) So have fun fellow Trekkie/Trekkers! Hoff'tor Heh Smusma! (That's Live Long and Prosper, In the Vulcan Language!)

God Bless, and Peace to all.

Obama is nothing like Spock. Spock cannot lie. Obama is a politician. Spock has no ego. Obama is an egomaniac.

when was the last time newsweek did a cover story on popular culture? don't recall? didn't think so. it's a breath of fresh air and a gutsy decision.

A couple of weeks ago actually. This was Meachams Missive on the ''state of Christianity in America'' today. NEWSWEAK has a penchant for trivial pursuits insofar as they got their guy in and now have little to report outside of the usual slavish adoration of the man while double-digit unemployment, a Taliban that is close to investing Pakistans nuclear stockpile, this flu epidemic, untracked TARP money, political corruption, and other problems continue to wrack the world. [ I could see perhaps one TREK piece but two?]
