I LOVE THIS TRULY MULTIRACIAL SPACE FANTASY WITH A MORALIST TONE -and yet it is also quite informative as it explores a lot of existential myths and legends as well as provide a raw egoistic human streak with an emotional edge -
i just hope i thiis movie is better then WRATH OF KHAN as that was really overdone and over the top ,in consistent with the tone of the series at all -good luck to all trekkies

Mr. Daly, I loved your article as much as I loved Dr. Mlodinow's article in the same issue of the magazine. It's great that Star Trek was featured on the cover. The idea of using a photo of a human hand holding the Enterprise aloft complemented the optimistic nature of your article perfectly. As an old-school Trekkie, I will be first in line for the new movie.

Could not make it through two whole pages without turning into a gushing tribute to The Big O.

Anyone besides me get the impression that the underlying thoughts go something like, "Why, NO, his feces DON'T stink, and you're a racist SOB for even daring to think such a thing!!"

Interesting take - for an Obama worshipper. Nothing more fascist than the Federation (guess you missed the point of ST: Voyager's rebels in arms, the Maquis). No bigger failure than the U.N. Can you say Darfur, pointy-eared baby? You call it "diversity," I call it space affirmative action. And when did Kirk ever obey the prime directiive? A few dozen cast-off alien lovers woud disagree. You are right about one thing, this ain't your daddy's trek - it's Trek for the Youtube/Lost generation: digital effects, fake nostalgia and unimaginative, infantile storytelling.

Oh please, you had to bring Obama in for a point that didn't even make sense. Only half of the old generation theatrical releases were worth watching and just the first from the Next Generation. There's no way that most people will automatically like new actors doing roles that have belonged to other actors for 40 years. It might not be a bad idea to put some new blood into a dying franchise.

What the "new generation" of Star Trek writers have figured out is that you can't keep the franchise going by making theatrical releases -as they did throughout the 1990s- that could have easily been mistaken for a two-hour TV episode. Apart from the first "Next Generation" theatrical release, there wasn't another worth a matinee movie ticket. I wanted to like them but I couldn't bring myself to watch them in theaters. I waited for the video release and then fell sleep watching them.

This new movie seems to do away with the tired energy of the old "Next Generation" and from what I've seen from the trailer, looks pretty impressive. Let's hope it justifies the hype.

I never missed an episode of the original when it had it short run on TV.

Shatner was the best lead with Avery Brooks a close second in the Trek based series.
