This, as you must know, was in disregard of the U.S. bishops' express request of 2004 that Catholic institutions "should not honor those who act in defiance of our fundamental moral principles" and that such persons "should not be given awards, honors or platforms which would suggest support for their actions."

Read the 2004 paper--it refers to honoring Catholics who act in defiance. Regarding sanctity of life what about waterboarding and the death penalty. Should the Church pronounce its stance and then only those who agree with everything the Church is for should be allowed at the Commencement?

A generous statement from Mary Ann Glendon, who apparently is stuck in the belief that the church can dictate what we believe and how we act. The church teaches; ADULTS decide. Father Jenkins is another brave catholic, like Pelosi, Biden and Sebelius, who have considered the reality around them and have decided on a course of action . They are brave for standing against the church's full court press trying to make them change. Anyone who studies the situation, howevr, soon realizes that they won't change and the church knows that they won't change. So the church is using a very public campaign to feed to fear, uncertainty and doubt among the catholic faithful, working diligently to maintain the church's position of power and prestige while more and more catholics are learning to think for themselves.

It's about time someone stood up for what they believe! Thank you Mary Ann Glendon for your stand.

As a former Catholic, now I don't regret leaving the church and its rigid dogma of anti-Christ's teachings of "...lover for all mankind...and...salvation for all...". Obama brings honor to the school, not the other way around. Consider yourselves lucky that the president has not simply figuratively slapped your silly faces and is gracious enough not deciding not to decline the invite with all your alum's' purported narrow-minded controversies.
