    I really love that you can't go on any comment thread about Obama without running into the "Obama isn't an American" because the State of Hawaii didn't release his "actual" birth certificate. I hate to break it to you nutjobs, but according to the Naturalization Act of 1790, Obama could have been born on Mars and he's still a "natural born" American citizen because his mother was an American citizen when she gave birth to him. Would you all have been foaming at the mouth so much had John McCain, who WAS actually born outside the US, had won? Methinks not...go away now, your stupity is getting really old...

      According to much legal research, at the time of Obama's birth he could be a natural born citizen by being born in the United States, by being born to two U.S. citizen parents (not possible because of his father), or, if only one parent was a U.S. citizen at the time of the birth, that parent must have resided in the United States for at least 10 years, at least five of which had to be after the age of 16.

      The problem is, Obama's mother was only 18 when she gave birth, so his only apparent route to "natural born" citizenship status would have been to be born in Hawaii.

              Especially when???.many of the legal cases against the president are consistent in their simplicity. They just ask Barack Obama to show that he???s a natural-born citizen.

              Obama could???

              Choice A: Authorize the State of Hawaii to produce his long-form certified birth certificate and give Courts the definitive evidence they need to dismiss these silly eligibility lawsuits.

              Or???


              Choice B: Use hundreds of thousands of dollars of campaign contributions to oppose and defend the lawsuits, and threaten the plaintiffs with financial sanctions.

              Hmmm. Choice A, or Choice B?

              According to Politico, "the FEC allows elected officials to use campaign funds to pay legal fees only if the action/investigations arise as a result of their tenure in office or campaigns."

              That seems to be fairly straightforward rule by the FEC. So???how much of the million dollars (700k since the election and 300k pre-election) was spent fighting lawsuits by "a former presidential candidate, a former deputy attorney general, many legislators, active-duty U.S. military," and others?

              Did Obama use campaign funds to fight the disclosure of his college records from Occidental because they might show that he enrolled as a foreign citizen? Why else would he hire a high-priced lawyer whose other clients include Amazon, Starbucks, and Microsoft?

              What about Choice C? If the lawsuits are so frivolous, why not just ignore them, and let them be dismissed? Maybe we were right when we hypothesized last year that Obama is hiding the fact that his original birth certificate was sealed, and replaced with one in the name Soetoro, reflecting Indonesia citizenship.

              ....Hmmmm...looking more and more like...these dawgs are on a scent....

In this case, leftwinged libertarian Ted Rall, who was scribbling for CAPITOL HILL BLUE newsletter in Washington when in October 2004, he inserted the quote into a piece he was doing on Bush and GTMO,changed the piece, but decided to keep the quote, which was picked up and spread by the leftwinged blogosphere beginning with THINK PROGRESS ,then TRUTHOUT,and then to KOS.
    Neither the non-partisan PEW Center for People and the Press, the ANNENBERG Projects FACTCHECK,or the Urbana Legends Reference Pages attach any authenticity to the quote which has no primary or secondary sources. Rall merely pulled a P.T. Barnum on the Left.

      PrezBo-Zo Barry...Mr. Bold and Transparency...could easily put the most prevelant conspiricy theory to rest...he could discredit millions....by releasing his Birth Certificate...his College Enrollment Applications...his 1981 passport he used to travel to Pakistan...but instead...He hires law firms...spends around $1,000,000 fighting their release...WHY???

      The only POSSIBLE reason is that he is HIDING SOMETHING.....He will eventually have to answer these questions...They are not going away...This is going past the "theory" stage...it is becoming a real threat to his Presidency....

    I'm not sure why I'm even wasting my time, but here goes:

    Yes, the Naturalization Act of 1790 was superseded (NOT overturned, very big diference) by the Naturalization Act of 1795, which was further superseded by the Naturalization Act of 1798. however, the only provisions that changed in these various Acts were with specific regard to IMMIGRANTS. The conferring of citizenship without naturalization children born to citizens outside of the borders of the US did not change with any subsequent Acts, meaning that my original point - that he could have been born on Mars and still be a citizen - is not at all chenged by your silly claims of the Act being overturned by later Acts.

    Somebody also mentioned that Obama's mother wasn't in residence long enough to confer citizenship, which is also ridiculous. The residence clauses in the various naturalization Acts are specific to IMMIGRANTS. Ann Dunham, Obama's mother, was born at Fort Leavenworth, Kansas. Unless she renounced her citizenship at some point, which she didn't, it doesn't matter how long she did or did not live anywhere in the US, she is still a citizen as are any of her children.

    As to the argument that his mother wasn't 18 when he was born, this is similarly specious and ridiculous. Firstly, his mother was born in November of 1942, meaning she turned 18 in November of 1960. Barack Obama was born in 1961 four months before his mother's 19th birthday. Secondly, the age of the mother has no bearing in determining the citizenship of a child.

    So I say again, it doesn't matter where Obama was born (although he was born in Hawaii, so none of this matters anyway), he is a natural-born citizen by virtue of his mother's citizenship.

    Nat. Act of 1790 (which didn't allow free blacks to apply)?? That was repealed by the Act of 1795. Either one still REQUIRES the person to be ADMITTED after approval. Where are BO's papers? I have mine. Most every citizen does. Oh, I'm sorry. Don't ask tough questions. Stay within the party line. Only ask about the dog, the weather and what is for dinner.

    As the comments indicate, there are probablyh some interesting searches that could have been looked at with this article (though I have to wonder what this foaming at the mouth conspiracy theorists are doing reading Newsweek, of all publications). But then again, I'm glad that the author chose to stick to largely sane queries. If searches for "obama antichrist" and "obama birth certificate conspiracy" and "obaba dog conspiracy" are low, it would make me feel relieved. But if they're not low, it would give me some serious indigestion, and I'd rather not know. I'm comfortable in my belief that rationality is prevalent in the populace, I'd rather not be disillusioned, even if it's not true.

    I for one am curious about the percentages for "Obama Antichrist." Though maybe it's better not to know. On the one hand, it might be comforting to see how few loonies are on google. But then again, the number might be a lot higher than I think, and I'd probably be left with a serious case of heartburn.
