Standing By Their Men

Why women like the fiancée of the alleged 'Craigslist killer' defend their loved ones, even when it may seem irrational to do so.

I think they're nuts. If my man showed any signs of being abnormal, he would be out of my life immediately. If anyone in my life behaved in a way that was questionable, I would distance myself from them. If they could kill an innocent person, what might they do to me or my family? So, no, I would not be a Tammy Wynette...or like her song states.

I just feel so bad for this girl. I'm her age and also engaged and I just can't imagine if something like this came to light about my own fiance. I think I'd probably be in denial for a while too. Its just hard to believe a loved one can be capable of such atrocities. I hope she can recover from this.

I know that it may be perhaps overstated to say that anyone is innocent until proven guilty. Yet, perhaps that only pertains to another time in history... A time when 24/7 news media was only a jackpot waiting to spin around. And in saying that, why wouldn't the press build this up better than probably the prosecution, themselves? After all, the book will be the final chapter and it's never too early to hype. As for a fiance to someone with such a promising future, guilty of being human isn't punishable by law... it's only crushing on the heart.

"The fact is bad events never make us as unhappy as we think they will." This about as untrue as anything I have ever heard. The fact is that bad events, e.g., the death of a loved one, divorce, frequently maake us feel much worse than we ever imagined we could feel, and for a much longer time. People who have lost a child say they never get over it.

There's also another possibility - crazy people attract other crazy people.

She is 24 years old; that explains everything. She is young and and inexperienced with how things really are. This may be the first major disruption in a charmed life. Over protected and kept away from the nastier realities (some people are just stone sociopaths) she reacted instinctively with denial. It can't be true because she didn't want it to be true. With about a week of solid irrefutable evidence that her fiance is a stone cold predator, she is now at bargaining (may have skipped anger but that may come later too). Finally, there will be acceptance but she will carry a scar somewhere inside for the rest of her life. She is also a victim, just a different kind.

This article is amazing.....and at least to me, it makes a lot of sense. There's definitely hard evidence against Markoff, and he's obviously guilty.......this article explains what may have been going through the head of McAllister and it seems like a very rational argument. I'm no psychology expert, heck I'm just an actuary.......but this article really seems to grasp the concept of human emotion in a desperate situation.

I don't think this article was very comprehensive and it was kind of detached from human emotion even though that was the topic at hand. Also, you may have wished to mention the hard evidence against this guy such as the video tape of him walking out of the hotel and the physical e-mails that have been obtained by the authorities verifying he was exchanging e-mails with women offering erotic services.
