The people of Nebraska should initiate a recall now. Its clear Nelson has been bought and paid for by the Insurance and banking interests.
Enough is enough, if they can't comprehend "For the people" they got to go.
The opposition to broader Health care is part of the Republican agenda to protect the insurance company profits, Nelson lacks the moral and intellectual requirement to be a Democrat.

There is a 'moral requirement to be a Democrat'? Really?
Someone had better tell that to Pelosi, Murtha, and Reid. All 3 are proven liars.

RO in Reno, I agree with you completely. But my problem is that since the government is not sending me any money as of this moment, would you willing to help me out? After all, I am a citizen of the United States of America and I deserve some respect, not to mention donations, (non tax deductabile), from those who believe that they are not paying enough in taxes.

Best bet is to ask your mommie, when you get older you can get a job and provide for yourself.

Da, Comrade! No deviations from the Party line! Now let's put on our jackboots, goose-step around the square and sing the Nationale.

I really enjoyed Mr. Fineman???s article; to the point and not caught up in the current Obama crush the opposition media machine, thank you!

Mr. Fineman's article lends itself to President Washington???s decision to limit the power of the President to two terms removing the potential of the loss of a Democracy because one person could have to much power? Congress has enjoyed micro Monarchies long enough and the country can not move forward on any ideology while mired in what should be antiquated racial sentiments on both sides.

It could become a mile stone of any administration and President Obama's administration a footnote in every Civil Rights publication that he is responsible for social reform where all others failed.

The best part is President Obama still has the favor of the American opinion and the power of his crush the opposition media machine the Democrats gave too him. Before they can turn him into a Lame Duck President which has happened to all who had tried before to some extent, currently would be completely feasible! Wouldn't it tweak the powers that be and also in our lifetime another milestone, he, be, so uppity, HaHa!

Also I am a Republican and have a more of a tendency to stay conservative and fly hard right then left and socialism really gets under my skin.

So in fact 60 Dem votes does not and will not tilt the legislative edge to them because they won't get 60 votes very often. Just say it and then tell us what we really need to know -- what happens to Obama's big legislative agenda, which is why most people voted him in: CHANGE! Now tell us how the Dems will change anything with less than 60 votes.

    Your next column, please.

Health care: If it will be as good as the Congress claims - a good test will be for all of the proponents to suspend their platinum life-long Congressional health insurance and volunteer to enroll in the "new improved" version with the rest of the American public. Don't think we will see a conga-line of volunteers. As an added note - one of the most expensive parts of the health care system in the US that is never insluded in the discussion - is malpractice lawsuits - (re John Edwards who made millions with his theatrical performances before emotional, uneducated juries). All of the hundreds of millions of dollars that white-shoe lawyers drag out of the health care system - from hospitals already staggering under health care costs, doctors - surgeons pay enormous malpractice insurance - , insurance providers are regularly raided - - not to mention how it suffocates the legal system - all of this costs all of us. There has to be tort reform that will hopefully streamline the health care industry.

For real, snotty, elitist Senators like Ben Nelson find nothing wrong with "socialized medicine." That's what they enjoy, at the tax payers' expense. A few months ago, Barbara Bush, America's Wicked Witch of the West, underwent surgery - paid for by the tax payers. Yet if tax payers want the same sort of medical care that Barbara Bush or Ben Nelson enjoys - that's a "deal breaker." Talk about Harper Valley Hypocrites.
The WHO recently conducted a study examining medical delivery systems. America's is the most expensive medical care system in the world. In terms of quality and efficiency, America ranks 37. (France got first place.) Cuba ranks 39, but Cuba has a lower infant mortality rate than the US. UTLA, the teachers' union of Los Angeles Unified School district, conducted a study and discovered that LAUSD would save $100 to $ 200 million dollars a year by enrolling its members in a single-payer health care system. And our current expensive, dysfunctional medical system is what Ben Nelson wants to perpetrate.
I can't help asking one question. How much money does Ben Nelson receive from the health insurance companies. HMO's are a major source of both lobbyists, bribery, and political campaign contributions. And once again, the average American working man foots the bill. Currently health insurance premiums are going up 10 to 20% a year - partially so that Senators like Ben Nelson can live high on hog. (To borrow a good old Nebraskan cliché.) I only wish that the folks in Nebraska were as angry as I am. I will make an extra effort to support MoveOn.
We MUST get rid of all these elitist, snotty Senators - regardless of their party affiliation in the election of 2010.

Good point Mwalimu, it's time these people like Nelosn who have been bought and paid for by the Insurance companies and the wall street bankers get booted.
The Constitution says "For the People" not " For the insurance companies" but they just don't get it.

    • Posted By: JohnR22 @ 05/04/2009 12:10:22 PM

Another dimwitted post. Perhaps Bush's surgery was taxpayer funded because she's...like...over 65 and qualifies for Medicaire. Like EVERY other citizien. Ya think?!

And I love all the name calloing and character assassination against Nelson. The last refuge of the Leftist ideologue. When you have no argument, resort to name calling. When you're losing the argument on it's merits, then question the integrity and motives of your opponent.

And, as a Leftist, how DARE you call anyone Right-of-Center an Elitist. The Left has the market cornered on arrogant, smug, Elites who know nothing of middle class america.

Clearly, people can't manage to play nicely here. The point of the article is that having a filibuster-proof majority is not a guarantee. The whinging going on here is beyond ill-considered: it is childish and stupid. This is why it takes so long to get things done in our legislature; people cannot bother to move past the labels and see that we generally want the same things.

Fineman's article on Ben Nelson prompts me to reflect on two of Nebraska's most important products: beef and pork.

In addition to being a highly inefficient source of protein, beef is loaded with cholesterol. One big reason America's health care costs are so high is America's addiction to hamburgers and T-Bone steaks, which result in a number of artery-clogging ailments. Furthermore, red meat is a major cause of prostate cancer, one of the major types of cancer in this country. In addition, cows produce a lot methane, a green house gas even more dangerous than carbon dioxide.

Equally toxic is Nebraska's other product, pork. Like beef, pork is loaded with cholesterol. And, like beef, pork is a major cause of prostate cancer. In addition, ham is a known carcinogen.

If we're really serious about reducing health care costs, we should impose an excise tax on beef and pork. The producers of these toxic products should be forced to pay for the damage their products create. I'd also suggest that MoveOn initiate a boycott campaign - urging everyone to cut down or eliminate beef and pork from their diets. Cutting down on beef and pork would create a healthier population. It would not only lower our health care costs, but it would also put a lot of agri-business lobbyists out of business, not to mention mega-buck campaign contributors. Getting rid of these megabuck donors and lobbyists would be one step toward cleaning up the Senate, namely getting rid of Senators who prostitute themselves to wealthy corporate interests rather than defending the rights of average working class Americans - politicians like Ben Nelson, not to mention the entire GOP. ( AKA, the Grand Old Putos.)

If you want to run your head about pork, gripe about that crap that Obama and his buddies put in that last bill that was passed but not completely read. Getting rid of pork and cattle won't help anything either...let me quess, you're a vegetarian. You complain about methane gasses. How bad are the fumes that are coming out of our sewer system? What's next, killing off old folks? Some of the ideas you Gore idiots come up with is a freakn' riot.

    • Posted By: JohnR22 @ 05/04/2009 12:06:27 PM

Don't worry; it's coming. As the next phase of the Nanny State's agenda, there will be massive taxes on "unhealthy foods (certainly the fast food industry, probably all red meats, and what the heck...now that we're at it let's just tax everything other than wheatgerm and bean sprouts). How ironic that the Party who didn't want the govt "in their bedrooms" apparently DOES want govt everywhere else in the house...from the kitchen (unhealthy foods) to the living room (sin taxes on booze/tobacco), to...yes indeed...the bedroom (forced acceptance of gay lifestyles as inherently equal, dating "contracts" at universities to ensure date rape is minimized, etc. etc. and......etc.).

Should be free clothes, but you get the idea.

  • Posted By: Ron Gross @ 05/03/2009 12:48:04 PM

I too want free health care, a free house, a free car, free food, feed clothes, and a credit card that I dont have to make payments on. Since I dont have these things at the moment, I am asking that all MoveOn.org members send me money(cash only, no checks) so that I too can live the American Dream.

Thank goodness for the Blue dog Democrats. They are the only thing standing in the way to a lot of over bearing legislation that would (and still might) bankrupt our great country the way the left led states like Ca. NY and Mi have turned out. I'm really starting to see we need a "Sane center party" This party is fiscally conservative and socially liberal. I think that is where the country is but the parties are either far right or far left.

A majority of us do not want Govt. Health care. A drastic tax on our energy consumption, Union's rewarded for their votes with G.M., Chrysler ownership, and card check legislation. Corporate bailouts to fat cats.. Arrogant leadership cramming their "agenda down our throats. This is why you will see Tea Parties growing rapidly as Obama's, Harry, and Nancy''s failed policies become clear over time. Meet me in D.C. on Sept 12th 2009! Time to "Speak truth to power"

Ben Nelson, along with a number of other Democrats in the Senate voted down the Durbin amendment which would have saved approximately 1.7 million home owners from foreclosure. As a result, banks will be left with more toxic assents than they had before. And we the tax-payers once again will foot the bill for bank bailouts.

Of course, one of the big reasons for bankruptcy and home foreclosures is medical bills. Most people filing for bankruptcy because of medical bills had health insurance. This proves conclusively that our current system of private health care is not only dysfunctional, but a menace to our economy. Yet the same Ben Nelson who voted against the Durbin Amendment are going to fight tooth and nail to prevent people from buying into a publicly-funded, non-profit plan - such as Medicare or the health insurance program Congress enjoys.

In his interview on the 100 day anniversary, Obama not only praised Senators but also attempted once again to reach across the aisle. Once again, Ben Nelson, like too many other sell-out Democrats, are more interested in getting bribes from various lobbyists than they are in serving the greater needs of this country. Ben Nelson may wave the American flag all he wants, but deep in their hearts he hates this country.

It remains for courageous groups of true American patriots, like MoveON, both to support Obama's bold initiatives and to begin a campaign to expose and remove these greedy, unpatriotic, anti-American senators from office, both in the primary elections and congressional elections of 2010.

I've been watching you for a long time and have a lot of respect for your political insight . I have a question ; Among other industries the insurance , health care , and banking corporations are all paying members of congress for votes , decisions , and manipulation of our government . This congress and it's leaders have just demonstrated to the whole world that our government is not of the people , by the people , or for the people as our past president said at Gettysburg . My queston is this ; for just this once could the media please stand up and tell the world who was involved in accepting money for favors for the banks and who gave the money ? PLEASE !
