A Star Trek Family Album: Wild, weird and very women-centric early days of the conventions

'Star Trek' conventions have grown so popular, hundreds can be held in any given year, all over the world. The first conventions were spawned from a letter-writing campaign, spearheaded by women fans, to keep the show alive. While their efforts kept the original show going for just one more season (Trek lasted from 1966-1969), the "Trekkie" army grew by the thousands. The demand for more conventions, and more 'Trek' shows and films grew with them. In this gallery, Costume designer Angelique Trouvere (shown at right in a a "Deela" Trek costume at a 1976 convention), a Trekkie from way back, offers a glimpse into the wild, weird and women-centric Trek conventions of the early 1970s. Set your phasers on funky, as we warp nostalgic in this 'Star Trek' family album.

Would love to see this photos but my PC rejects Flash as a Romulan plot to destabilise and slow down my PC's warp drive. Please consider offering web pages in standard HTML with IMG tags. Thank you.

For the record -- which was pointed out to Newsweek web editors back on the 11th -- photo #16 is not from the mid-70s. The color is too rich for a photo from that era, but most importantly it contains both 25th Anniversary and certain Next Generation memorabilia, the latter of which puts it as 2002 at the earliest.
