Hard to respect a piece claiming to explain things that starts out with the bland assertion that there's such a thing as "Tehran's efforts to build a nuclear-weapons capability".

No doubt about it, Tehran is refining uranium and no doubt about it either that Iran, like every other nation, is faced with the threat of global wearming and the desire to move away from fossil-fuel power generation. But nuclear arms? Those who are actually examining the Iranian nuclear program rather than writing about it in Israel and the US eastern seaboard, look for evidence that Iran is working toward an atom bomb ... and those people have found none. Hirsh'd claimed insight is mystifying.

Israel is a dangerous rogue state that threatens its neighbors, routinely attacks them with no provocation, practices apartheid and ethnic cleansing and murder. If you have ever met an Israeli then you know they are the scum of the earth. Time the USA stopped financing and supporting these psychopathic dogs.

    George Washington on Israel

"A passionate attachment of one nation for another produces a variety of evils. Sympathy for the favorite nation, facilitating the illusion of an imaginary common interest in cases where no real common interest exists, and infusing into one the enmities of the other, betrays the former into a participation in the quarrels and wars of the latter without adequate inducement or justification." ~George Washington Farewell Address

"The nation which indulges toward another habitual hatred or habitual fondness is in some degree a slave. It is a slave to its animosity or to its affection, either of which is sufficient to lead it astray from its duty and its interests." ~ George Washington

"Peace, commerce and honest friendship with all nations; entangling alliances with none." ~ Thomas Jefferson

The US propping up of Israel is a good part of the problem in the Middle East and has been for the last 30 years. Israel never would have been able to expropriate 2/3 of the West bank with US backing and support to the tune of about $3B per year!

For those who like to use the Bible to support their viewpoint, I'd like to suggest that sometimes the best way to 'bless' is to show tough love. By indulging Israel's bad behavior we are acting like a parent who looks the other way while a child does drugs. In fact, this is more like abuse, because the self-destructive behavior is being ignored. It's indeed surprising that religious folks have trouble understanding this when it comes to Israel.

      • Posted By: 3bronzestar @ 05/08/2009 5:13:45 PM

I don't know what part of the Bible you are referring to, but it says plenty about the consequences of either blessing or cursing Israel. I would much rather be on the blessing side of this equation; we have enough problems that we have created on our own to deal with.

Mr. Netanyahu comes to Washington to ask us to attack Iran?

Let's see..... We have the Iraq war, the Afghanistan war, the taliban a few miles from Islamabad, and possible control of Pakistan's nuclear arsenal, North Korea with nuclear weapons and a mad dictator, the worst economic crisis since the great depression in the 30's, a fiinancial-credit crisis, a health care crisis, exploding deficits, global warming, Somalian pirates, a pandemic .... And Mr. Netanyahooo wants US to start a war with Iran because he does not feel comfortable with the idea of not being the only nuclear power in the region ?

Not to sound too cold Mr. Netanyahooo, but we are kind of buisy at the moment here in the USA. If Iran does not let you sleep, take a sleeping pill. If you feel that Israel 's security is treatened by Iranian nuclear weapons, remind yourself that Israel has them by the hundreds, and on top of that can count with American WMD's to stop any mad Mula dead in his tracks.

I know that a good Right Winger has to start a war as a first priority upon reaching power, but right now is not the moment .

    Dear Peace at all costs,
How can you think that Obama is against Israel? Rahm Emanuel (Chief of Staff) is an Orthodox Jew, David Axelrod (Senior Advisor), Peter Orszag (Dir of Office/Mgmt/Budget) are also Jewish. They all support Israel 100%. If Obama is against Israel, why does he have Jews in such high positions?

the U. S. of A's major problem is that they are a super power, AFRAID of there own power and therefore are an idle threat to anyone. unless they come to terms with the might that they possess, and use it, they are useless

Israe, having occupied and ethnically cleansed Palestine over the last 60 years, deserves to get nuked.

It will be a relief to all patriotic Americans not to have spend over $3 billion a year subsidizing greedy jews.

  • Posted By: gvillagran3 @ 05/08/2009 10:55:33 AM

Some one should put Mr. Netanyahu in his proper place by braking the news to him that America will not under any sircunstance, add to it's set of problems a potentially devastating war in the Middle East with the clear potential to destroy what's left of the World Economy.

Israel needs to understand that they have the full force of the U.S. nuclear arsenal, not to mention theirs to counteract any Iranian nuclear treat, and that should be enough. If Netaniahu does not like it, and want to start a whole new political, military, and economic hollocaust with the only intention to keep Israel's nuclear stratigic advantage (read leverage) over the Arabs he is either an idiot , or mad.

In any uni-lateral attack Vs. Iran Israel will become the world's pariah, America will dissasociate itself from Netanyahu's government and it will fall, and Iran will go back and re-double its efforts to build nuclear weapons, this time in conjunction with other Arab nations.

So maibe some one should get this nut Right WIng Likud blow hard and tell him to cool it, or he and his party will be put on ice permanently .

    • Posted By: chris1000bc @ 05/08/2009 3:30:22 PM

So your saying it should be enough for the Israeli's that if all or some of their population gets wiped out by an Iranian nuke, the U.S. will nuke Iran back? Yeah, why doesn't that sound comforting?

    • Posted By: chris1000bc @ 05/08/2009 3:12:51 PM

So the Israelis can feel safe knowing that if they get wiped out by an Iranian nuke, at least the U.S. will nuke Iran back for them? I am sure that is the sort of comfort they are looking for.

    • Posted By: Vigilance @ 05/08/2009 12:49:22 PM

Yup. We've spent six years fighting Israel's war in Iraq (maybe more like fifty years if you really go back and look at the CIA support of Saddam Hussein against Iran before he became our enemy), and that's gone just disastrously. Not one Israeli served as a member of the Coalition forces. Israel can fight its own wars from now on, is my feeling, if they don't want to declare their nuclear program or give up the Greater Israel bullshit or do anything else that would reassure me that they're acting right.

  • Posted By: Isaac Bledsoe @ 05/08/2009 2:43:19 PM

Israel faces an Iranian adversary commited to its destruction and bent on arming itself w nukes. Hamas is commited to detroying Israel and would dominate any Palestinian state. I grew up hearing Leftists blame Cold War tensions on the US. Now the same people think Middle East tension flows from the actions few million Israeli's living in a space the size of New Jersey. Israel's nuclear triad, quality armor forces, and spitrited people are her only guarantee of survival. The dangerous illusions of these Obama people will pass in time. Let's hope they don't cause a nuclear war in the meantime.

  • Posted By: valwayne @ 05/08/2009 1:11:32 PM

Obama will let Iran get nuclear weapons and he will betray Israel. That's not exactly what this Newsweek artical said, but that's what it means!

    • Posted By: Uday Salizar @ 05/08/2009 1:39:57 PM

Iran is only looking for good time. Is not easy, having good time.

  • Posted By: sieg6529 @ 05/08/2009 1:04:05 PM

I have never been too supportive of doing for others what the others would probably not do for you. I sincerely believe that the USA and Israel should remain allies, but if the USA's military might is the only thing keeping Israel from war(s), maybe they need to make some major changes.

    • Posted By: Vigilance @ 05/08/2009 1:20:29 PM

One of the few really good reasons I can see to not dissolve the alliance is that I expect that Israel might just freak out and decide to preemptively nuke its neighbors. They hold most of the power in the region, but of course they can't see it. And, as the recent operations in Lebanon and Gaza show, they certainly cry hard enough when one person gets killed that they feel the only way to solve the problem is to kill hundreds or thousands in retaliation.

It's fear - panicked, terrified fear. "One of us has died, so the rest cannot be far behind." And then they fail to realize the extent of their own power - or maybe they don't - and go brutally killing to the tune of many times their own losses, just to feel less afraid. I'm tired of supporting that fear.

The terms of our alliance with Israel have fostered an attitude in that country like that of a terrified, spoiled child that cannot stand on its own two feet. And it's rather rightly enraging everyone else in the region - if someone treated us like we and Israel treat them, we'd be at war in a heartbeat. Now, I absolutely do not claim that the Arab nations surrounding Israel don't suffer from problems of corruption, or that they act right in dealing with his conflict either. But their anger is understandable in light of a hundred years of Israeli settlement that refuses to acknowledge anyone but "God's chosen people" - i.e., them.

Why bother looking deeply at yourself when you're one of the "chosen people"? Obviously, everything you do is right, because you have God's blessing - at least, that's the undercurrent in Israel's attitude that no one wants to bring up. Modern Israel, very much like George W. Bush, is so convinced of its own rightness that any attempt to get them to step back and look at what they're actually doing meets with a mental block and cries that "if you're not with us, you must be against us". And at this point the Arab hardliners are just doing the same thing, so no progress can be made.

It's sad. I'm tired of watching people who are convinced that they're God or Allah or whoever's chosen act like children because their belief system encourages this mindless "whatever we do is right" mentality. And it's very, very hard to make a *** in that kind of belief system. If you're always right, why listen to anyone else when they cry that what you're doing is wrong? Obviously, THEY must just be wrong and incapable of recognizing your beauty and grace. It's enough to make one sick.

The day after Amadinajad retains his presidency Israel will bomb him, and Obama will receive the lesson he never imagined: peace comes only through believable power never through empathy world love and empty bs. Bunker buster bombs work by killing a few appropriate souls exactly when needed,; love bombs kill millions of innocents and ultimately don't work. Save lives, bomb Iran...Bunker bustera away! Oh, Dems, Kerry that is, forget LOST (Law of the Seas Treaty) all those with even a smidgen of military knowledge recognize Law if the Seas Treaty for exactly what it is, a no fly over rule to stop Israel, which pretty well explains why neither Israel, America nor Iran have ratified it. We all want to defend and attack when necessary. Up yours Lurch.

The ONLY language people like this really understand comes from the barrel of a gun. Ur right, bombs away, and it has to be massive and may include low-yield nuclear bunker busters. Yes, NUCLEAR. A-jad needs a cruise missle through his bedroom window, that would be on the target list.

Netanyahu is out of touch with reality. Fact is dozens of attempts at peace have been lost by both sides. We Americans are sick and tired of the empty promises. The broken promises. We have asked Isreal politely to stop doing thing that fan the flames of hatred. BUT NO they continue at every turn. It's almost as if they depend upon the strife to survive. The constant needyness is like an unappoligetic alcoholic.. ENOUGH! Do it yourselves.

    • Posted By: Trooper101st @ 05/08/2009 9:33:03 AM

Barack gave that swine Arafat a pretty good deal and he turned it down. Why? Coz he profited from his war with Israel. How many millions did he steal off his own people? They are so blind with hatred, they just could not see it. The cat came out the bag after that pig kicked. He stole off his own people. How much Palestinian blood is on Arafats hands? PLENTY.

      • Posted By: Vigilance @ 05/08/2009 12:52:33 PM

Arafat's regime was corrupt beyond reckoning...the problem, as I said, is that the only Palestinians left in the territories are the violent hardliners, who don't really know how to govern. The moderates and educated part of the community all left a long time ago and are living in exile in various parts of the world (including America).

But Israel did plenty to create this situation, and I don't know how much I feel like supporting them anymore with my tax dollars. I don't know what the right answer is, but my sympathy for Israel is at an end. The legacy of the Holocaust and what it did to the Jewish people is not supposed to be used to engender support for an Israeli regime that perpetuates brutality and revenge killing and human rights abuses itself.

  • Posted By: conenorm @ 05/08/2009 12:00:52 PM

What Netanyahu has to say to Obama is simple : Mr.President, there is just one little thing more important to me than
the close partnmership with the US : the rurvival of Israel and the Jewish people. Your prescription for a Palestinian
state side by side with a nuclear bomb capable Iran is a prescription for our annihilation.

    • Posted By: Vigilance @ 05/08/2009 12:34:11 PM

No, it's not. This is the kind of modern Jewish neuroticism and paranoia that drives me up a wall. What it would mean is that Israel might have to learn what it's like to stand on its own two feet for once and stop bullying its neighbors. Yes, I do realize they don't particularly act right either, but two wrongs don't make a right and Israel has the most power in the region thanks to our decades of military and financial aid.

Really, Israel is reaping what it's sown where its neighbors are concerned. From the first aliyahs (migrations) back into the region early last century up right up to today, Israel has had plenty of chances to try to live side-by-side along the Arabs and establish some kind of rapport with them. But they didn't. From day one the Israeli attitude has been "this is our land, now you get the *** off it". And then the Israelis are surprised when the people who'd been living there since the Jewish exodus two thousand years ago want to kill them as a result of having been thrown off their land. Israel made its bed - it acts victimized now that it has to lie in it . We and France and Britain helped them make that bed via the various coups and black ops we've supported over the last century - Mossadegh's overthrow in 1948 in Iran, Saddam Hussein and his CIA support from 1960 or so onwards, our support of the Saudi regime and our overlook of their own human rights issues, and et cetera. But we don't have to do that anymore. We can make a break with the kind of Western attitudes that treat Arabs and non-Israeli Middle Easterners as something less than people, and we SHOULD make that break.

I don't support throwing Israel COMPLETELY to the mercy of the region and its neighbors, but its policy needs to change, and change drastically, if it wants to remain allied with the United States.

Can someone please explain to me why I should give a crap about Israel, Gaza, or Iran?

Everyone involved seems to be having a good time. If they all want to fight, let them have their fun. It's not America's problem.

President Eisenhower seemed to think that it was, and was closely observing the results of what occurs when the US stood back and let everyone ''have at it''. The 1956 war appeared to have Israel on the ropes enough that the tough talking Nasser of Egypt ,backed by Soviet arms, decided to nationalize the Suez Canal. Here Ike did two things expertly. First, telling Israels Ben -Gurion to butt out and withdraw from the northern Sinai, then, sending a carrier-based task force to the region telling Nasser in no uncertain terms that Cairo would be made into more rubble than the Valley of the Kings and we would still retake the Suez. Everyone backed down for a time and that was that. This was one of Americas finer periods in the region of acting as neutral broker on both sides. This Ike-like neutrality demands on the portion of Obama that he not get too chummy with either side, and if Syrias Assad or the Iranian mullahs or the Abbas Pali factions get out of line and seek the destruction of the state, then all Obama need do is pull a Nixon, who sent US fighters acting as a virtual last-minute cavalry manned by IDF pilots that crushed the Egyptian armour in the Sinai in 1973. Thus Obama need consider neutral diplomacy until a ''redline'' is reached, either by continued Israeli settlement in the West Bank or Golan, or by Islamic perfidy that brings on a general war that no, America would not be able to ignore [anymore than Clinton did with a Kosovo that posed absolutely no threat to the US, Reagan with Lebanon,or a succession of US presidents with Vietnam who used ''dominoes'' much like the Bush administration did with Iraq ''wmd''].
