The late author Michael Crichton had something to say about this. He recalled getting the idea for a good book and then telling different people about it. They were complimentary and agreed that it would be a good topic. But he ended up never writing it. He found the telling about his project was deflating in terms of his energy to follow through. After that experience, Crichton always kept his book plots/topics private.
