The GOP’s Paranoid Foreign Policy

To the Republicans, everything Barack Obama does is a sign of weakness and a threat to American sovereignty.

Notice that Carter and Brezinski are conspicuously absent from this article. Under Carter, the Russians invaded Afganistan and committed untold atrocities, the Cubans flooded into Angola with 30,000 troops when Carter cut off aid to Jonas Savimbi, the Sandanistas wreaked havoc in Central America and fomented chaos in Honduras and El Salvador when Carter abandoned Nicaragua, our Embassy was held hostage for a year in Iran when Carter facilitated the ouster of the Shah - Iran was never a world threat under the Shah, and on and on. All because of the wek diplomacy and obsession with human rights, Carter sat grinning while the thugs of the world had their way. The assessment of the Republican Party's decay is correct, however , and until the religious right is marginalized, the Republicans have a bleak future. Conservatism as we knew it under Reagan has been hijacked by the far right. It is an easy target in the largely left-wing press and unfortunately diverts attention from the current administration's political and economic blunders. Obama's 73% approval rating has been described as a "sugar-high" that will eventually be revealed as temporary as the unemployment rate goes up and inflation starts affecting all of us.

The governments of the world are laughing at our president because he seems clueless on what really would be for our best interests in our foreign policy. It is almost as if he hates America. Unfortunately most of the people are unaware of this because they don't see all of the stories on other than "hate" radio or FoxNews.

If Obama had been President during the Cuban missile crisis, he would have opolgized to Castro for not helping him target U.S. cities.

It's not complicated. GOP foreign policy has been consistant. Favor the follks you can control. Hence, the way we always seem to cozy up to dictators. Our corporations and the dictators have the same goal: to allow the rich to get rucher and damn the rest of us. Look at the history of the last century. Who have the GOP's friends been? Whomever United Fruit, Standard Oil and Haliburton and the munition makers could do business with. The GOP is run by big business. It's tragic that they have convinced so many Americans to vote agains their own best interest by inflaming them on social issues. while stealing them blilnd..

The GOP is dedicated to making the rich richer

Where ever you look - health, the recession, climate change, and foreign affairs - the GOP has a one word answer "NO!" If it is to remaina viable part of the political scene, it must be part of the answer, not part of the problem.

There are those extremely wealthy and powerful few who deceptively advocate an ultra-conservative philosophy when what they really want is the placating and patronizing of their excessive financial aspirations. They are those that see another George W Bush in Sarah Palin, someone they can count on when simply satisfying her ego, self-interests and ambition, someone with the same self-focused, arrogant, bold, unconscionable and aggressive sociopathic personality who will again unhesitatingly provide them with more of the same. She has already demonstrated that she has no conscience and will do/say whatever she feels will benefit her and those same rewards, the power and prestige of the presidency and the financial return, especially the promised after-office kickbacks, that kept GWBush totally focused are more than enough to work for her. She is ideal for them but just another real catastrophe for America and the rest of the world.

The GOP waves all the flags, talks constantly about "our national heritage and freedom," terrifies the naive and ill-informed that our government is falling apart at the hands of socialists, has lapdogs who stoke racism and division among groups, and is constantly singing a song about "not stealing from our children and grandchildren." They are not the "party of no" - they have become the party of "nothing-between-the-two-ears." When that region of the anatomy is hallow, all a person can do is hear him or her self complaining, seeing enemies at every turn, and attempting to galvinize with like-thinking people to concoct shallow reassurances to calm each other. They feel safer when guns are shot, planes drop bombs, and people have to go to war to buttress the military-industrial complex in this country. It is a tragedy that so may Americans can be hoodwinked with rhetoric like Rush Limbaugh spews on the airwaves. He represents the "lost abandoned struggling sons and daughters" of mainly Europen immigrants who arrived in this country in the late 19th century and 20th century up to WWII. He also represents their southern counterparts who never emerged from the desegregation of the south - who remained in the mines and in small towns and on small farms - who worked for the 'company' before they moved overseas. They have been duped about the promise of prosperity based on pigmentation.People like Palin, Senator Mitchell from Kentucky, Sen. McCain, Limbaugh, are their kinda people - "we'are the good guys and evryone else is a bad guy" all show/pomp and little depth and substance.

    • Posted By: bjsassy @ 07/06/2009 3:10:08 PM

4truth. Ah, it is joyful to hear a Democrat gushing about their country. The Democrat Party is the party of tolerance and compassion. They want to reach out and help the working class and the under-privileged - unless these people have a different viewpoint! You are showing your elitism and snobbery when you heap ridicule on European immigrants, southerners, miners and farmers. Where is the open-mindness and concern?

BTW, do you have any direct quotes from Senator McCain accusing half of the country of being "bad guys"? Senator Mitchell was the senator from Maine. Are you thinking of Mitch McConnell?

The GOP (and the US) must return to the wise wisdom of John Quincy Adams. We have been slaying dragons we do not understand. We should champion liberty everywhere but gaurantee our own. We know that the rest of the world will see us as a dictress if we do not.

  • Posted By: Ethan30 @ 07/03/2009 6:56:34 PM

I wish you will be able to analyze the current foriegn policy (if you can identify one) instead of thinking in a partisan matter.

Putin and Sarcozy think Obama is weak, not the GOP. HAd the American press been more European oriented they would have heard those old news months ago.
IRan and North Korea certainly think Obama is weak, and their actions are louder than any European whispers.

I am not sure how what the GOP might think of Obama matters if soon Iran will take down NYC and several additional port cities in the US, once their nuclear plan is complete.
You should be paying more attention to what other leaders are saying abroad, rather than recycle the election season talking points.

The election is over. Obama won. Now deal with what he does and how the world is responding to his actions (?) or incompetence.

Its amazing how people like you speak as if you have the facts and you are familiar with the individuals you mention in you comment. The truth is you have no facts to back up your statement which (as you stated about this artical) are old election season talking points. People like you begeed for the other "allies" to step up and take the lead in national issues rather than the US. Europe has condemed Iran more strongly than the US, I say this is good as they have a history of complaining about the aggressiveness of the American government, in short-let them do the work and take the heat for a change.

  • Posted By: John The Baptist @ 07/03/2009 6:44:14 AM

The people you mentioned in the article are not conservatives nor republican for that matter. Bush, Limbaugh, cheney and Rush are disgruntled democrats who hi-jacked the republican party by fear and political retaliation.
There was only one candidate that was running for office that was honest and talking peace, that was Ron Paul. Obama is a carbon copy of what we had. The media is being directed to shape a false impression of change.
Don't believe me? Are we still in Iraq? yup Are we nation building in Afghanistan? yup Do we still have secret prisons? yup Are we still illegally spying on Americans? yup Are we still bailing out wallstreet? yup. I can go on for hours. The only thing that has changed is that the whitehouse has a puppy running around on the lawn.

This man this so call President we have is making our way of life, the American way of life weak and frail. I urge our nation to stop this madness, i urge all those who have some kind of reality check, stop this madness. And most of all I urge the Republican to begin to transform into the party of old, the party of choice. After the Civil War for nearly 60 yrs most Blacks voted Republican, why because we were the party of choice. I don't know who will read this passage, but if anyone out there who agrees with me please let me know and we can put our ideals together. This madness of favouritism the media has, must stop. We can start now and we must be clear.

  • Posted By: MrPaige @ 07/01/2009 9:18:14 AM

The party needs a make over and now is the time for this happen. We must start now and soon

  • Posted By: greatmidwest @ 06/30/2009 11:13:40 PM

Nowadays, all you have to mention are the names Cheney or Palin, and Americans feel a heck of a lot more secure with President Obama and Vice-President Biden...just replay the CBS interview with Katie Couric and the video-clips of threats of fear instilled by non-existent WMDs and a great sense of comfort with the current adminstration allows us to get a good night's sleep here in the USA...God Bless America.

Lets see now they are at 23%, they need to go lower yet, their mindless acolyte's aren't working hard enough to marginalize the national party so whats it gonna take to produce the energy for them to consume them self's, a dash more of piety?, a dollop more of Hypocrisy? a tablespoon of ignorance?, a cup of stupidity? a quart of bitterness?A sprig of Incoherence?an ounce of intolerance? A few more Sexual Deviants to Make of cake of Indigestible politics, like the Whigs before them that went the way of the Dodo bird, Extinct and not missed. In short please expedite your demise so another worth party can take your place.
And please your present histrionics is getting rather repetitious and boring, Please avail your self's of the free recipe it behooves you to hurry, we are getting tired of trying to resuscitate a corpse that is purifying in the spotlights of politics.

Even as we speak, Obama is traipsing around the world apologizing to anyone who will listen. This is an absolute sign of weakness and will come back to haunt the American people for years to come.

    • Posted By: adam_t_davis @ 06/27/2009 12:33:37 PM

I'm not saying it's inherently un-legitimate to hate Obama, but I really don't understand the logic of a lot of Obama-haters. How is it a sign of weakness to apologize to someone?

      • Posted By: emailsenators.com @ 06/30/2009 1:23:23 PM

I suppose it depends on what you're apologizing for. If the radical Islamic world denounces us because we are "meddling infidels" and Obama apologizes to them by saying "yeah, you're right...sorry" (I am paraphrasing here only people, no hate mail please), then yes, it is clearly a sign of weakness. Anytime a potential adversary believes you might be seeing things his way even just a little bit...it's a sign of weakness, an opportunity to be exploited. That's just the way it is, in business and politics....sometimes the line becomes a bit blurred there!

More importantly, the American people need to be involved in the political debate. We need to contact our representatives in Washington. And they can ALL be contacted within just moments.

The GOP has had strong leadership in foreign policy. Nixon was perhaps the best. Bush (the father) was good. Reagan was strong. Now as a whole they are weak. We need new thinking. Nixon was not well as a person but history will look back and find that Nixon was highly effective on all the issues.

  • Posted By: thehappyamerican @ 06/05/2009 2:22:44 PM

Obama is focused on bolstering his position in American pop culture--to keep his poll numbers up--and there's little substance in this trip.
Maybe he'll try a trip to the North Pole this Christmas to make it sure Santa and elves understand he's seriouse!
    About...
Well, the press will connect some dots editorialy and declare Obama a great ...
    ...Uhhhhh...
Just the greatest President ever. So much better than any other. Newsweek is a campaign pamphlet!

I'm surprised he's not buying up MTV time while sporting a big medallion.
I bet he sits up at night and doesn't care a bit about domestic and foreign policy.
He's more concerned about his next gig.
All those balls up in the air with regard to health-care, terrorism, the war and the recession are just smoke-and-mirrors.
His real concern is how people may view his shoes and overcoat.
He just wants more bling. How inconsiderate of him.
You are 100 percent accurate and represent all of us "true" card and birth certificate carrying Americans.
How could we ever let that man win an election.

Oh yeah, he's smarter, faster and tolerates your ignorance...

      • Posted By: adam_t_davis @ 06/27/2009 12:30:07 PM

Alvy, did you really ask "how could we let that man win an election"? Well, how could we not? The alternative, after all, was John McCain. This is a man who rudely smears anyone that disagrees with him, implying that they are in favor of the mass murders conducted by the government of Iran, and sings songs about bombing people. We are SO lucky that McCain didn't win.

"The GOP is in danger of losing its reputation, firm since the Richard Nixon era, as the party of national security" Lord, let's hope so! The Republicans were asleep at the wheel on 9/11 allowing the worst attack on the American mainland since the British burned Washington. And then Cheney and company responded by attacking a country that had nothing to do with 9/11 or even posed a threat to US interest. Having selected the wrong war, they exectuted it with all the finese of a 6 year old driving a Hummer. 3000 American dead on 9/11. 4000 American soldiers dead in the wrong war. I'd say it's long past due for the republican national security mythology to be dismantled.

    • Posted By: gregcovert @ 05/28/2009 8:16:08 AM

Maybe so, but in the time it took you to type your post, those great American soldiers killed 5 more terrorists in that craphole called Iraq:)

      • Posted By: tpratt @ 05/29/2009 5:04:19 PM

but shouldnt they have killed those 5 more terrorists in Afghanistan? I agree that it's the wrong war. Everthing that we are trying to do in Iraq today is stuff that we should have been doing in Afhganistan.

        • Posted By: gregcovert @ 05/29/2009 5:40:25 PM

The terrorists were going to join the fight no matter where it was fought. We got rid of Saddam and killed a bunch of bad guys. Alll those bad guys came from alot of countries and Iraq became the focus. I agree with some of the arguments made on this site. Mistakes were made. I think most of America realizes that, but its time to take the rearview mirrors off and fight.

          • Posted By: adam_t_davis @ 06/27/2009 12:25:28 PM

"We" - meaning you - did nothing. "They" did.
"They" fought so you can continue to be stupid, disrespect and call unAmerican your president.

"You" might be another kill first, kill second and make them kneel kinda person.
You don't care who's in front of you or the consequences it seems.

Barack HUSSEIN Obama is the biggest national security threat to the USA. The sooner you stupid kool-aid Americans who voted for him realize this , the better. Obama's economic policies regarding the car companies , health care are all being challenged as unconstitutional and will soon be reveresed by the Supreme Court. Obama is not qualified to be President. He's the worst President in the history of the USA. Pretty soon when the Supreme Court overrules Obama's policies , Obama is gonna find himself back to square one. This dumb President is just winging it. He's a laughing stock. He 's got no balls. Obama is letting North Korea and China play the USA like a fiddle. Barack is a joke and he's turning the USA into a joke.
