If Hollywood musicals did nothing more than record Cyd Charisse at her best, they were totally justified. Many years after her retirement Ms Charisse said in a documentary that the musicals of her era and earlier featured dancing that expressed the sexual instincts, and when it became permissible to show naked actors at least miming sex, musicals as then known were doomed.

Naturally, the musicals that followed -- Fame and Dirty Dancing both featured abortions -- were completely different in their frankness about sex. This is not to the taste of many who continue to enjoy both the earlier musicals, and the thousands of clips from them that appear for vast audiences on YouTube and similar Internet sites. It's great that the form keeps on evolving.
