    Japan is only known for heavy duty pop by those who aren't paying attention. The country has myriads of impressive rock, metal, and industrial bands of every variety and sub-variety. Check out Malice Mizer, Larc en ciel, and Kalafina on Youtube just for a quick start. Even their more serious pop musicians, such as Utada Hikura, are wonderful. Not that there's anything wrong with enjoying ridiculously bouncy J-pop music.

    If you are going to mention enka, you should listen to OMODAKA. He recently played in the US a few months ago. It's a fusion between electro and enka music. JERO is a one time thing whose only appeal is he's a black guy doing enka. OMODAKA's music is actually quite amazing. Check out samples and videos and you'll see what I mean:
