Your article says Obama needs some people around him who, in LBJ's words, have "run for sheriff." Those words were spoken to LBJ, spoken by Speaker of the House Sam Raburn. See "The Best and the Brightest," page 53.
A misplaced faith in the meritocracy.

This is a ridiculous premise....Mr. Alter seems to suggest that the only "real world" experience that counts is war. What about working in private industry? A startup? A large corporation? Municipal government? Federal government? Are all of these fake experiences? None of them is worthy? That is essentially to dismiss the 99% of the population that is not involved in the wars in Iraq. Its a quaint and absurd argument based on a romanticized vision of our past. Lets not forget that this "greatest generation" has practically exhausted the planet of natural resources with almost no vision for the consequences in terms of environmental degradation. This is also the same generation that supported tyrants, dictatorships and other evil men in charge of nations around the globe in the hopes of stopping communism....It wasn't all rose petals.....And this "experienced" group tended to also have good educations.....Mr. Alter comes across as just the latest flavor of anti-intellectualism that was absolutely the hallmark of the Bush years...Distrust those who excelled academically or economically.....It sounds awfully like an echo of that other famous retro-ronmanticizer, Goerge Wallace, with his "pointy headed intellectuals." Lets face it. We want brains running the country. Who else do you want up there? Community college graduates? Give me a break. I want Ivy League in the White House. I want people who have excelled through the meritocracy, with or without military combat experience. We've had the alternative for the last 8 years and it wasn't pretty....
I don't see that in Mr. Alter's article. But I would hire a veteran long before I'd not, for most jobs. They are good people who are usually doing the right thing, even when no one is looking.
But Bush went to an Ivy League school...
And Lastly, on Club Gitmo? Re-open Alcatraz. Its Pelosi's district.
You would have to destroy the prison now on the Island. It is hardly fit to hold a decent scout troop. It has not been maintained for use in decades.
Nearby there are several facilities that can hold them. There are several thousand across the States. Alcatraz while attractive, is not the prison it was in 1963, and it was in decay then.
Fantastic idea. Perhaps she can become a guard.
Could you please help me find these things Sir?

Oh but, hey -- listen! I know you're busy! If this is too much for you right now -- I mean -- tell you what. I'll come back tomorrow. Give you some time to get these things together, You know? I mean, I know you're busy. I'll just let myself out. I'll be back tomorrow. And the day after. .?
What's that Mr. President? Who wants to know these things??
We the People of the United States of America ! You know, the ones that vote.
Are you still losing the 2008 election?
Once again, Still Free in the USA. You hit the nail on the head. Barack Obama is a smart and slick person. Somehow, he has been able to get himself elected into office without proof of citizenship. If ever it is illuminated that he truly is not an American citizen, how will history desl with this incredibly large oversight? The most powerful person in the greatest free country in the world doesn't even have the qualifications to be in his office. His charisma has enabled him to pull the wool over millions of people. He's made a mockery of our country.
The problem with the ideologically blinded Alter is that these ''too smart by half'' denizens of the WH are seeing the luck run out of ''Change''.
''We are out of money now'', sayeth Obama , which is odd, due to the fact that his plans while both a candidate and president allowed that we would have the neccesary monies to cover universal healthcare which is expected to eat up as much as 27% of the nations GNP [SLATE] while also acknowlaging that everyone else is running out of dough as well, which is precipitating a record number of small businesses cutting off health insurance to their employees in order to prevent these from being laid off.
The GM move has been a disaster, and was probably dreamed up by one of Obamas ''whiz kids'' if not Obama himself. Even the UAW does not want this albatross hung round their necks, thus does GM seek to lay off even more workers and shut down even more dealerships, hence even more jobs, setting in motion the very thing Obama was trying to avoid. Cap and Trade is a political loser, due to a flurry of studies by other whiz kids that display heightened unemployment and rising energy bills, chief among these, those performed by the Congressional Budget Office, the Government Accountability Office, and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
No luck on the foreign policy front. The NKs are as truculent as ever,so is Iran,Bibi tells Obama to get lost regarding settlements, and HAMAS will not even bother to entertain any compromise or ideas save the hard line. Afghanistan is a hard road to travel,as is Iraq, where suicide bombers continue to kill our soldiers in both countries, and the Taliban actually using our airstrikes against Afghan civilians as a true ''propaganda device''. Remember ''Darfur''? Well, neither does anyone else, save a few on the human rights side. GTMO has proven to be a political embarassment for the administration with new RASMUSSEN poll numbers showing a solid majority of Americans [62%] opposed to bringing detainees to the US ,parity at 50% in keeping the joint open, and a fight for the political life of Obamas House Speaker who appears to be hunkered down in China, that bastion of human rights. Obamas Whiz Kids need less ''whiz'',as Truman could have instantly told him. In trying to emulate the best of Kennedys administration,Obama may well have produced its worst results that set the stage for the McNameras,Rusks, and Johnsons and the ''quagmires'' that followed.
Still Free in America,
OK...You take the cops and military. But without collecting taxes how will you pay them? Or for roads, bridges, education etc? You keep the bible to run your section. See how quickly theocracy & religious fundamentalism turns sour. The rest of us will keep the Constitution. After all, it was written in those heathen Northeastern states.
Divorce agreement:
THIS IS SO INCREDIBLY WELL PUT AND I CAN HARDLY BELIEVE IT'S BY A YOUNG PERSON, A STUDENT!!! WHATEVER HE RUNS FOR, I'LL VOTE FOR HIM.
Dear American liberals, leftists, social progressives, socialists,Marxists and Obama supporters, et al: We have stuck together since the late 1950's, but the whole of this latest election process has made me realize that I want a divorce.
I know we tolerated each other for many years for the sake of future generations, but sadly, this relationship has run its course. Our two ideological sides of America cannot and will not ever agree on what is right so let's just end it on friendly terms. We can smile and chalk it up to irreconcilable differences and go our own way.
Here is a model separation agreement: Our two groups can equitably divide up the country by landmass each taking a portion. That will be the difficult part, but I am sure our two sides can come to a friendly agreement. After that, it should be relatively easy! Our respective representatives can effortlessly divide other assets since both sides have such distinct and disparate tastes. We don't like redistributive taxes so you can keep them.
You are welcome to the liberal judges and the ACLU. Since you hate guns and war, we'll take our firearms, the cops, the NRA and the military. You can keep Oprah, Michael Moore and Rosie O'Donnell (You are, however, responsible for finding a bio-diesel vehicle big enough to move all three of them). We'll keep the capitalism, greedy corporations, pharmaceutical companies, Wal-Mart and Wall Street.
You can have your beloved homeless, homeboys, hippies and illegal aliens. We'll keep the hot Alaskan hockey moms, greedy CEO's and rednecks. We'll keep the Bibles and give you NBC and Hollywood. You can make nice with Iran and Palestine and we'll retain the right to invade and hammer places that threaten us.
You can have the peaceniks and war protesters. When our allies or our way of life are u nder assault, we'll help provide them
security. We'll keep our Judeo-Christian values.. You are welcome to Islam, Scientology, Humanism and Shirley McClain. You can also have the U. N.. but we will no longer be paying the bill.
We'll keep the SUVs, pickup trucks and oversized luxury cars. You can take every Subaru station wagon you can find. You can give everyone healthcare if you can find any practicing doctors. We'll continue to believe healthcare is a luxury and not a right.
We'll keep The Battle Hymn of the Republic and the National Anthem. I'm sure you'll be happy to substitute Imagine, I'd Like to Teach the World to Sing, Kum Ba Ya or We Are the World.
We'll practice trickle down economics and you can give trickle up poverty your best shot.
Since it often so offends you, we'll keep our history, our name and our flag.
I'll bet you ANY WAR which one of us will need whose help in 15 years.
Still Free - I loved this! I can't wait to see the comments. You are awesome.
Still Free in the USA, thanks for posting this. I 've never seen it. Do you know the name of the person who wrote it? I'd like to give him/her credit when I forward this in email format to all my friends.
Found it, Still Free in the USA. Thanks.
IQ is grossly overrated. My father had a term for people like Obama. He called them educated idiots. Education and diplomas without a massive dose of common sense and humility are worthless. Obbama's flaw is his supreme arrogance in spite of his practical experience. He never worked a job in his life. Not even a part time stint in a fast food burger joint to teach him at least the slightest little bit about the real world. His community organizer experience is nothing more than an apprenticeship in entitlement politics. He lives off of his ability to tap into the latent guilt complex of middle class white people. That won't be enough to see him through the debacles to come from his policies.
wow, rho1953, did someone step on your tail? Obama is one of the most capable presidents that we have had in recent times. Why don't you crawl back under your rock?
Perhaps you'd like some sugar with YOUR Obama Kool-Aid, AlanV. I feel sorry for you that you do not understand how undeserving a president Obama really is. Upon what criteria do you think he is worthy of being the leader of the free world? Community organizing? He has no military experience, he won't prove his citizenship, he is secretive about his health history, he was a "present" voter in his seat in Illinois, and he won by the fact that he is black. His credentials don't speak to a person deserving of his job. And no I am not a fan of Bush. I thnk history will show his arrogance undermined his ability to think clearly. It will also show that he did not know how to hire or fire well. In order to be an effective leader, one must know with whom to surround one's self. He did not know who's opinion to trust. So he trusted his own. It's nearly always a tragic flaw when we trust ourselves, exclusively. Reason and judgement become clouded. Obama, on the other hand, is less overt in his opinion of himself. He has a large degree of arrogance to him. Yet, in contrast to George Bush, he is stealthy and furtive. Along with George Bush, Barack Obama is someone I fervently do not trust. rho1953 is correct when saying Obama is an educated idiot. His arrogance will undermine him, too. I've seen some call him a "Post Turtle". I'd have to agree with that nickname.
Obama and Company are now stealing Chrysler and GM from their righful owners, investors, bondholder and creditors and giving them to the UAW. He's violating the 5th Amendment of the Constitution, depriving Americans of their private property without due process. Nothing in his restructuring plan would change if the bondholders and creditors were given the same priority, which they legally deserve, as the UAW. It's out and out theft!
Amen, Mainer1776.
My new found optimism and my personal accountability have nothing to do with Obama, but rather with an era of reality that hit with the economic meltdown. I refuse to fear this idiot and I want our country back
When we recall the fight and integrity of Martin Luther King and Rosa Parks, without whom some would still be giving up a seat on the bus and would not have the right to vote, we need to ask ourselves if the legacy of those who conquered the spare of opportunity that we enjoy today, has been reserved only for political speeches and has ceased to be a commitment of a generation to self respect, education, honor and faith
Thanks UMwater. I am as well, a social conservative but not party affiliated. YUP, and the "rags" reported "The First Lady America Has Been Waiting For". What an INSULT. I seem to recall Laura Bush and her tireless work for literacy. No excuses; just WORK. No "victims" just WORK
"Yes We Did"?? What did you do??? You voted a man who had never accomplished anything into office. I guess "you did" vote the first black president into office. yay! Racism is dead now that black people can officially practice reverse racism without anyone saying anything against it!
Who cares if he is the first black president? It doesn't matter if he's a useless president.
In the words of a great black man, "I have a dream that my four children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the color of their skin but by the content of their character." It's time to start judging the man by his character and not by the fact that he's black!
You want to know his character? He claims to be a Christian, and yet stands for things his God condemns: abortion, homosexuality, etc. The question is not whether you agree with abortion or not, it's whether or not you trust a man who will forsake his own God in order to be popular! If a man does not represent a God he believes in, how can he be trusted to represent our country?
Still Free in the USA: I wish I had time to read all of your posts. You're fabulous. You have a global understanding of our current views on racism, mediocrity, celebrity, and undeserving election. I wish more people would have the insight you do. I am neither Republican nor Democrat. I vote with my intellect, after researching issues, learning voting records, assessing character, finding experience. Using the terminology the "First Black American Preisdent" specifically illuminates what he professes to decry: racial identity. And his wife........she considers herself Black before considering herself a First Lady. She's a liability to him and a liability to our country. I'm ashamed to say the American people voted this inexperienced charlatan of a moral Christian person into office.
Ah, Johnathan. Would you like some sugar to sweeten your OBama Kool-Aid?
In the wake of Memorial Day; while Mr. Obama has never served in the military; perhaps he needs to spend some time in combat; to understand that we are not only at war overseas but here at home; battling and loosing to a severe recession bordering on a depression. Perhaps; just perhaps he could learn about strategy versus strong leadership and decision making. Strategic planning was a buzz word ten years ago when there was a TON of "fat". We dont have that luxury anymore. This President needs to put his big boy pants on now and behave like a warrior. With conviction and strong leadership.
Well said. Not all intellectuals are counter-balanced by the weight of real world observations. The key to running any organization properly is finding the middle ground between the two. Like any traveller you need a direction and the intellectuals provide that direction. An example might be moving towards a greener economy or creating a missile defense system or loosening the economy. But the placing limits on implementaion of these objectives comes down to the realists like the Eisenhowers or Omar Bradley, and Pattons of the world. When you travel too far in a given direction you quickly outrun your supplies and the effort becomes wasteful or even perilous. What is even more wasteful is setting the wrong objectives and going the wrong direction from the beginning. The Bush administration suffered from a failing in both areas. They chose the wrong the direction to go in by ignoring intellectuals and eschewing scientific evidence and failed to place realistic limits when they did move in a particular direction. The Iraq war is a great example of both failings. Obama has the intellectuals and is going in the right direction. This article points out correctly that his major challenge is going to be measuring how far to go before stopping and deciding what can be fixed now as opposed to later.
My boss has a great line that I???ve often repeated and just love: We all live in our own heads.
But with respect to my boss, it just seems in Washington, their heads are lodged in a very dark place ??? no need to be graphic, but time to get real.
Because what else could explain a nation's capital that totally ignores the revolution unfolding in California???s capital? Where they're cutting spending like crazy after voters in that state went crazy and told them to stop spending, stop taxing, stop playing the same old games.
But looking around in Washington, nothing's stopped. Not the taxing, or the spending, or the ignoring, or the thinking, "We know better than our clueless subjects know."
So they merrily go on thinking in their heads that they're doing just fine. Clinging to election results from half a year ago. And insisting they've got a mandate ??? totally ignoring election results in California half a week ago and forgetting what they've got now is a manhole... and they're sinking into it.
It's one thing to be half-baked. But another to push spending that's proven half-ass.
But you wouldn't know that, would you, Washington? Your big head just doesn't fathom half-ass. No wonder. It's not that your head can't see it. The darn thing's just wedged too far up it.
i'm so tired of all the "Bush" bashing!..Good lord, the man wasn't that bad. Just wait and see how bad "Oblahma" screws us up...he has a good start already. He's a man that has such an unwarrented ego that it just repulses me to see or hear him. America should be ashamed of this person who keeps putting down Americans. He seems to forget that he is half white also...what happened to that part of him...or is it just easier to cop out and call hisself black?? Anyway...Bush vs Obama...no winners there....the loser is America!
Cool article, Jonathan ...
I agree with drewand. Neither the "whiz kidz"nor the Pope is infallible. Obama is wise enough to recognize this.
