TV infotainment - NOT only Oprah by any means - is modern voodoo 90% of the time, I feel. All infotainment shows would need a constant subtitled disclaimer to this effect to make this clearer. But then who would pay attention to that after a few days or so?

TV, with its decades long symbiosis to human short attention span, is not a medium that lends itself to in-depth analysis. I try not to watch it whenever I can.

    OUT OF CONTEXT!

Your article takes the content and intent of Oprah's guest out of context and presents a demeaning perspective on Oprah as a person.

You may want to do an article on yourself as to the uderlying racism that leads you to find dirt in everything a person of color does.

Oprah has my admeration and respect for her accomplishments.

I disagree that color has anything to do with this. My understanding is that individuals are blindly using what is advertised/recommended on the Oprah show as a quick fix, cure all, etc. rather than doing their own research. I have heard comments "if Oprah had it on her show it must be true". It can't be taken for granted that each item will be examined for their validity. In most other circumstances a warning is posted. It may be time to do the same on the Oprah show.

Oprah has always reminded her audience to take the information she presents, research it for themselves, seek their own medical advise and then apply it as necessary. I have watched her show for years and although I do not treat everything Oprah says as gospel, I do think she helps women to understand issues, new advances in technology, health care and current events.
Just like any newspaper, television or radio station, you can't always believe what you hear. The media and it's reporters always present a one-sided prospective. It is your obligation as a listener to get to the truth by educating yourself through more thorough research.
Oprah lost a lot of merit with me when she refused to interview Sarah Palin during the Presidential election. I dropped my subscription to her magazine and stopped watching her show. After a few months, I realized Oprah is a regular person and perhaps a little racists. She wanted her canidate, Obama, to win and being the smart woman she is, realized having Palin on her show would boost Palin's popularity and might even cost Obama the election. I would probably done the same thing in her shoes only I would have stood strong in by endorsements and not try to hide them. (I have since started watching her show again.)
However, on the whole, Oprah is a very good and spiritual person. She is the most giving person any of us will ever get the chance to know and believes she is doing what God would have her do. Which God she serves is still a mystery to me but Christs says, "he who is not against me is for me." Luke 11:23

Oprah has done a lot of good for a lot of people, especially spiritually. I suggest you take a closer look at yourself, especially after putting the word "soul" in quotes.

II plan on cancelling my Newsweek subscription. I have no problem with the magazine criticizing Oprah. The way they did it was brutal and disrespectful. The cover is insulting. Of their approximately 26 pages of advertising in the magazine the week the article appeared, 10 1/4 are ads from pharmaceutical companies. Why would Newsweek give any credibility to bio-identical hormones most often dispensed by compounding pharmacies with no profit in it for the big guys? They mention of no cases where anyone was harmed by taking them. I for one have been helped tremendously. My bone density in my spine increased 12% over a 2-year period. Whoever this Pat Wingert is - she is doing no service to women. Newsweek, not Oprah has lost my respect.

On the website rateitall.com I read blogs of people that love Oprah and people that disliked Oprah. Someone that thinks like me wrote, ???If the women???s ego gets any bigger, she???ll need to be hoisted by a crane. With all the Oprah stuff, give us a break.??? On a positive note another person wrote, ???She is a great journalist, she asks all the question everyone is too weak and too powerless to ask! All Oprah has to do is mention her dislike for anything and it will bankrupt the industries that sell it and shake the economy. Get over yourselves people and give honor where it is due. Oprah is the most powerful women in America, go ahead and swallow that and as for her using her name on all her business ventures that's good business because her name will sale anything (even dried dog poop). As for her Christian avoidance thing I am positive it has something to do with her million dollar contracts, because I know she's a Christian. What's going on with her show is alot more complicated than people know. She is on all of her covers because models cost big bucks and she runs a tight ship, why pay a model when you can do it free. Oprah deserves everything she has, she came from the back waters of Mississippi, near poorest of the poor, outhouses etc....She has a big heart to go along with all that big money. update---A book club is about enjoying reading, not about reading tight-ass ultra-intellectual toilet paper so you can show everyone how supposedly smart you are! O's book club is important in the right ways.???

Oprah has been the first to do a lot of things. I think she supported Obama because she wanted to see another first. I think that is great that she is living the Amerian dream. I think she has done great things for the multitude of people, but I also think she???s become increasingly full of herself. I do not know why she needs to put her name on everything. What???s next the Oprah Winfrey tampon? I think if Oprah told her viewers to drink Kool-aid laced with cyanide or jump off a bridge they would do it. This is what scares me. With great power comes great responsibility. She is due to renew her contract in 2011, so we have a couple more years of her, unless you keeps going. I think she has been brain washed by Tolle and she really needs to think about the kind of stuff she is putting out there. O-men.

In September, Oprah gave away 276 brand new Pontiac G-six to people in her audience. They didn???t come out of her billion dollar pay check. The sticker price was 28,500 and people got stuck with a hefty $7000. tax if they wanted to keep the car. The Harpo Spokeswomen said winners had three choices. They could keep the car and pay the tax, sell the car and pay the tax with the profits or forfeit the car. (CNN) Who really won? Way to go Oprah. You are such a giver! Send some more money to Africa. You really fulfilled wishes???the wish for you to make more money in advertising. Oprah is the president of Harpo productions which is Oprah spelled backwards.

Tom Cruise returns to Oprah. Oprah does an exclusive interview with Tom Cruise since 2005, on Tom Cruise???s sofa in his Colorado home after jumping off her couch on the show. He said it was the way he felt for Katy Holmes. Oprah asks Tom about Scientology and about how people are saying he is trying to convert her. He says that she or people are interested they should read it on there own. Tom says, ???Absolutely, I believe in God???There is no way you can come here [in the Rocky mountains] and think there isn???t a god.??? She ask him about the paparazzi. He said his life was already a zoo, then came Katy, and then the baby, and it was even more of a zoo. They waited three months to put the picture out of Suri and finally did just to get it over with. He feels misunderstood. Well Tom, did you think your life was going to be less of a zoo by jumping on Oprah Winfrey???s cough?

Now Oprah is going to fix people homes. She is probably doing this because she heard how well Clean House of the Style Network was doing. Nicey Nash is not going to like this. Is Oprah scared Nicey Nash is going to be the next Oprah. People love Nicey Nash. Is Oprah trying to be like Style? Style is one of her hundred of topics Oprah has on her website. She has got some BS, I mean something for everyone.

On a show in 1996 she allowed a debate between Gary Weber of the National Cattemen???s Beef Association. (NCBA) and vegetarian activist Howard Lyman. Lyman had easily won the argument, horrifying Oprah and her audience with vivid details about cannibalistic animal-feeding practices and their link to England's outbreak of mad cow disease. Angry, the cattlemen had responded by pulling $600,000 dollars in advertising from Oprah's network and were already threatening legal action. (Rampton) Mad cow disease is a disease you can get by eating nerve tissue of a cow with the disease. Presently the cattlemen are telling the public that the problem of mad cow disease has been "solved" in the United States by a new FDA regulation last summer which, in the words of the New York Times, "banned the use of ground animal parts in feed." In a way I think it was a good thing by waking people up to the horrors of uncooked meat and getting some new regulations passed. A sexist subtext ran through discussions of the Oprah trial. In Amarillo, bumper stickers and T-shirts sported the slogan, "The only mad cow in America is Oprah." (Ramptom)

We can not forget the book A million little pieces by James Frey controversy. The book was released in April of 2003, In September of 2005, the book became an Oprah???s Book Club selection. The book shortly thereafter was the number one paperback ???non-fiction??? book on the New York Times Best Seller list for 15 straight weeks and quickly became the number one book on Amazon.com. This shows us the power of Oprah. In January 2006 the book was reported as being, a completely factual memoir.

Now, she has she got her Bon-Bon eating audience brainwashed with her spiritual guru propaganda. She has lost touch with the average women with her $50 million dollar mansion in California. I guess you have to give her credit for being a poor child from Milwaukee ghetto and becoming a self made black women billionaire, but I really think she needs to think about that information she puts out there I think she has been brainwashed by Tolle. She started on this self help road when she lost her weight. She wanted to help others lose weight like her and now it has snowballed into this spiritual self help guru propaganda. Oprah slogan is ???Live your best Life.???

Ed Tolle is no different than Jim Jones, Ron Hubbard, Moon, etc. Winfrey even had scientologist Tom cruise on her show. If think that was more for ratings because of his relationship with Katy homes. He was jumping on her couches during the interview. A common theme in discussions of the Oprah program was the notion that Oprah's popularity gave her some kind of improper influence over the mindless female multitudes that constitute her audience. As evidence of her hypnotic powers, commentators noted that an endorsement by Oprah's book club can frequently propel an author to the top of the bestseller list. (Rampton) Oprah???s supports people that are not creditable and supports unhealthy diets and fads.

Drink Acai to lose weight fast. I keep getting these emails about the Acai diet seen on Oprah. I opened the email and there was Oprah???s face. It is not healthy to drink only a shake for breakfast and lunch and only eat dinner. You need to exercise. Acai is a fruit an expensive fruit and it is no different from drink any other fruit as your breakfast or dinner. The only difference is the price. They are trying to get people to take it in pill form claiming that it kills leukemia cells and that it is a colon cleanse. All fruit has fiber and can be a colon cleanse. I like Acai and all kinds of exotic fruits. People need to keep in mind that everyone body is different and something that might be healthy to one might not be healthy to another. I do not think it is a bad thing. I think what is bad is how they are trying to make money off of it.

What is different about Tolle connection for Winfrey is that for the fist time she went in her applauded Book Club???s history, she gone in to business with the author. And the author is not one of a novel, memoir or cookbook; he???s a mysterious creator of a philosophy that Winfrey endorses and suggests her readers live their lives by. (Friedman) Ed Tolle speaks about enlightenment. I hope this will show him some enlightenment. Oprah has her degree and is a smart women, but has these wack jobs on her show. We have seen from the Asch conformity and Milgram studies that people are easily persuaded to do things. Oprah has that kind of power over people. They do whatever she says; Oprah supports it. She has a following. That is why I am calling her a cult leader. Nevertheless many of Oprah???s rapt devotees were ready to believe whatever ???secret??? she had to share, after all, who better than a billionaire talk-show host to lead them into the ???promised land.??? (Ross) In my opinion she goes where the money is. She needs to be careful what she puts out there. She was already sued by the meat company.

Larry King was surprised that she was not endorsing Hilary Clinton because she is so pro-women. I like that about Oprah. I am surprised she didn???t vote for Mcclain and Palin with all her soccer mom viewers. She said it is because she is friends with Obama. Oprah did not use her show to support Obama, but after he won she screamed on television. She said she had not seen this kind of unity since 9/11; 9/11 was this tragic experience that brought us all together, and she says we now are all brought together in the name of hope. She said it wasn???t about race, but I believe she wanted to see a black president and it was because of his black roots she supported him. She has never taken a political stand before. I have no problem with having a back president. Anyone that hooks up with Oprah is an instant celebrity.

Bill Keller, an internet evangelist, from ???Live Prayer,??? says that Oprah is the most dangerous women in the world; nevertheless, her fans disagree. He understands she makes people feel good, and her program does a lot of nice things, but her program has evolved over the years where she is the Queen of the new age gurus and is making a fortune pushing this new age philosophies down peoples throat. He believes she is leading people down a dangerous path. She claims to be a Christian, but said on her show that there are multiple ways to get to the light and she started an XM radio show this year a course on Miracles claiming there is no sin, so you do not need a savior. She promotes a 10 week course on A New Earth a book written by Eckhart Tolle.

Oprah has given millions of dollars to charity from the Boys and girls Club to Hurricane Katrina. There is the Oprah Winfrey foundation, the Oprah Winfrey angel network, the Oprah Winfrey operating foundation. Do you see a pattern? The Oprah???s Angel Network works around the globe to give people the chance to live their best lives. The Oprah Winfrey Operating Foundation, in partnership with the Gauteng Department of Education in South Africa, is building the Oprah Winfrey Leadership Academy for girls- South Africa. These are all good things, but has she gone too far in exploiting and distributing the teaching of a questionable new age writer? She does not care who is on her show. With great power comes great responsibility and she has a responsibility to get creditable people on her show, which in my opinion she does not. It is great that she gives, but don???t you kind of have to when you have that kind of money.

We have all heard the bizarre stories of cults with mass suicides and killings. It has been 30 years since the Jonestown massacre where nine hundred Jim Jones followers were ordered to drink cyanide laced Flavour-aide. (Layton xi-xii) Don???t drink the kool-aid or in other words do not believe everything you read or hear. Take it with a grain of salt. There has been recent talk about Oprah Winfrey leading a cult and her involvement with certain individuals. Her latest book club selection is A New Earth by Eckhart Tolle. People are letting this new age doctrine in their homes. Some people can not miss the Oprah Winfrey show, so they TiVo it. Is the ???O invitation??? an invitation to join the Oprah cult? For decades Winfrey has cultivated a cult following. And millions of Oprah fans appear willing to do whatever Winfrey wants, whether it???s buy a book or a DVD (Ross)

The ???Oprah this??? and the ???Oprah that??????The Oprah Winfrey Show, Oprah.com, The O is the Oprah magazine, Oprah???s book club, etc. She now has her own channel on You Tube. She joked about calling it Oprah???s channel. The Oprah???s favorite. The ???Oprah loves this??? and ???Oprah loves that???. Is it just good business? Will Oprah???s name sell anything? (even dried dog poop) Is this someone that really cares about America and the world, or someone who cares about Oprah? She is the #1 celebrity in Forbes magazine, based on earnings and fame. She is worth 2.7 billion dollars according to Forbes. Just because she has a lot of money does not make her more knowledgeable about certain subjects, or any kind of an expert. Everyone knows if you get on the Oprah Winfrey show, you have instant fame. So what is this massive media phenomenon all about?

Michelle Obama introduced Oprah at her husband???s campaign in Iowa as the lady that touches people???s souls and empowers us, the first lady of television. Oprah joked about what people would say about her influence on the campaign???will they say it will have the same influence as her book club or like her favorite thing show. She said she was endorsing Obama because she cares about America. People online are calling her a Kool-Aid drinking Liberal believing everything Obama says. I wouldn???t call her a Liberal???she just dose whatever it takes to make money. The Oprah Winfrey show is currently the highest-rated talk show and longest running television show in the American television history. She has been on the air for twenty two years. Or is she just overrated? According to TIME magazine???s fifth annual list of the world's 100 most influential people: leaders, thinkers, heroes, artists, scientists and more Oprah Winfrey was #22. She is even higher than Mother Theresa.

Oprah is an entertainer. She is not authority on any subject. I cannot believe the people who take her advice.

This issue was no longer "news"week. The article about Oprah was something I would expect to find in a weekly gossip magazine. Hopefully, this is not a result of your new format because I'm a subscriber for the next three years. Please return to reporting newsworthy material. Thanks.

Thank you for writing this article. Oprah, because of her billions, has made herself into a modern-day Messiah. She would still be broke in the south without wealthy women who have nothing better to do with their time at 9am during the week. Nice reporting!
