A wise medical doctor explained this to me: He said that when a patient comes to his office, they are coming to seek out his help. His education and knowledge doesn't encompass all the different foods and supplements on the market. Patients can go to health food stores and to other sources for free for that information. He said that if he were to charge a patient for telling them to go home and eat helathy, take a good multipvitamin and excercise, they'd accusme him of theft or at best , being a snake oil salesman. He was correct! A doctor can tell his patients to stop smoking, eat right, exercise and even help them by giving them aides to help them. But this is all information that we actually know and that we can reinforce for free almost anywhere. A medical doctor should be accessed only AFTER we have exhausted other alternatives unless it is something of serious proportions, like a lump in the breast. To expect medical doctors to also be alternative medicine doctors or nutritionists is wrong. Criticizing them because they are not all things health related is ignorance on our part. They go to school for many years and then intern, and they still only receive a short course on pharmacology. Your pharmacist is a good source for detailed information on medicine. And any pharmacist will tell you that there is no way to know all things about all drugs, have you seen a PDR (Physician's Desk Reference)" Yet, many expect their doctors to know everything about everything medically related.

Excellent article, one that captures a glimpse of the 'Oprahisation' of our culture. The sad truth is that millions of women, including my sisters, listen to her for advice on how to live their lives. I definitely would not put her on the level of a Maury Povich or a Jerry Springer, but the few times that I watch and listen to her are purely for entertainment.

You are the one to pay the cost for your choice.
Good old fashion values never go out of style
    Fads Come and go
I can show ads of doctors promoting smoking and eating Lard
how doctors thought germs were not even present and many other ways our thinking changes

Your life is yours and I think your envyous of Oprahs success and friends

Western medical science is only a small part of healing modalities that are essential for health and wellness. People like me, living with life-threatening illnesses every day - for decades often must research, listen to other people (like Jenny McCarthy & Suzanne Somers), try new things in order to get answers that can improve their lives. An example is importance of sound nutrition in health. In decades past western medical science gave no validity to nutrition being importance in health. It has only been in the last 10 years that they were willing to acknowledge there is an important place for better choices in what we feed ourselves. High levels of Diabetes and Heart Disease that our children are now suffering from could have been avoided. Research is funded (with healthcare as a commodity - as in the US) by institutions who have something to gain from the research. Who is willing to pay (for example) for food research. Not many companies. There is a place for western medical science but it is quite narrow in scope. So many of us have to live A-Head of science in order to live productively and to be well. Oprah Winfrey highlights options that open my range of choices. I am on compounded hormonal therapy and responding well. I am forever thankful. Thank you Oprah!

"In decades past western medical science gave no validity to nutrition being importance in health" - actually every doctor I know (and working in healthcare I do know a few) recommends healthy diet and exercise to their patients. The problem more often than not lies in patients being unwilling to make the lifestyle choices to help themselves. High levels of diabetes and heart disease children are now suffering from can be avoided if people feed their kids a healthy diet and encourage them to get daily exercise. Don't blame the medical community for individuals decisions to live unhealthy lives. Face it, there are a lot of people who prefer to take a pill than to quit smoking, alcohol and burgers.
On your comment re: food research - most food manufacturers conduct food research - the results are often new product lines. If you meant specifically research into health benefits of food then there are companies doing that too. One company here in NZ, Zespri, has been conducting studies into the health benefits of kiwifruit, another company Comvita is researching medical benefits of live manuka honey (they already have a line of honey wound dressings on the market here). All this bleating about how natural remedies are being squashed by big bad pharma just peeve me off. If you actually look you will find there are a number of food manufacturers out there working damn hard to offer healthy, medically proven, benefits to consumers - they're making the effort to invest so they can make product claims that are backed by fact and not fantasy.
My concern about Oprah is that she is promoting product without balance - people need to know the risks as well as the benefits of the product. And they should always be encouraged to seek advice from their doctor or a healthcare professional before taking natural or alternative remedies as some herbs, vitamins etc can interact with each other and produce side effects.

ABSOLUATELY AGREE! I don't nkow where I would be without bio-identical hormones. A doctor in Jacksonville, Florida has been treating women with them for 20 years - hundreds and hundreds of women. Only two of those women have ever gotten breast cancer. There is a MAJOR difference between hormones that have had their structure changed so they can be patented by drug companies and hormones that are the same structure as those the body makes. If hormones in proper balance caused cancer then younger women should get cancer more than older ones because they have more hormones. Common sense. I'm not saying that every woman needs hormones or that there have never been problems from them - they need to be individualized and balanced. Progesterone always needs to be prescribed along with estrogen! Newsweek takes advertising from drug companies and I've found them to repeatedly write prejudiced articles that are not based on fact. Any magazine that relies on advertisements from drug companies will NOT provide information from the other side. Alternative medicine should really be called NATURAL medicine - medicine tha recognizes the fact that the body works as a whole and that interrupting normal biological processes in the body, as drugs usually do, does NOT cure any disease but creates MORE disease. Everyone I know that has simply gone to a mainstream doctor and taken whatever they prescribe is getting SICKER! I've observed this for years, I've studied books written by doctors with beliefs from both sides and I've observed the experience of others as well as myself. Biased NONSENSE continues to be publoished in Newsweek as fact when it istn't. I hope that all readers will delve into the info themselves but unfortunately many people just want someone to tell them waht to do!

Good point. Sophiae. Western medicine is very dogmatic and narrow mind and refuses to consider alternatives. This Newsweek article was ripped to shreds by the brilliant Dr. Deepak Chopra who will forget more about medicine than the entire staff of Newsweek will ever know.

This is ridiculous! I am a fan of Oprah. And I can't believe people get the medical advice from a talk show. I think it's the people that look to TV and not their doctors that are the problem. There are many, many good reasons why you should watch the Oprah show. The main reason is to be informed about things that are out here as OPTIONS! I think these shows are setup to get the public asking the right questions to THEIR doctor. There have been several shows that I have watched in the past that had me calling MY doctor to ask questions about. You should never blindly follow advice from any TV show, website or news article without consulting YOUR physician. I can recall that on several of these shows, she stated that same or similar statement. Furthermore, there are plenty of other talk shows out there. The Oprah Show is by far the best and most though provoking out there. However, people should use good ole fashion COMMON SENSE!

    • Posted By: lizdaw49 @ 10/27/2009 8:30:36 AM

Of course one can't proceed simply based on a talk show! HOWEVER - how does anyone know that their OWN physician is informed about the truth of all choices! Does the opinion of the doctor you have chosen automatically make him right in your case? I chose my doctor - an integrative and very caring and informed physician - based on my own research and the fact that what I've learned agrees with his philosophy on health care. However, if I find something that doesn't agree with his idea and makes sense to me I will discuss it with him, he will listen and even research what I bring up. Generally I end up agreeing with him because he gives me good reasons and I know he has my best interest at heart. But I have been to many doctors - including well-meaning ones - that simply did NOT know things that I knew were correct. One put my husband on statins because of high cholesterol (he is now off them and has good cholesterol tests without them due to nutrition and lifestyle changes) - she did NOT tell him to take Q10 while on the statins and that is dangerous! Well documented - yet few doctors that firends have gone to, including cardiologists, tell you that statins cause a dangerous Q10 deficiency! So if YOUR doctor puts you on statins and not Q10 - is he automatically correct??

I'm sure that if you get rid of all the personal agenda, product placemnt, and misguided opinions, Oprah is a pretty good show.

Oprah is a great entertainer but definitely a mixed bag. I cancelled a subscription to her magazine because the emphasis on glitzy glamour products befitting the budget of a billionaire didn't do much for me.
I would disagree with the authors on one point. Oprah hasn't failed to lose weight and keep it off because she fails to follow Oz and Greene's advice, they have failed her by providing bad advice: low-fat dieting and lots of aerobic exercise. That, combined with soy foods, are a great prescription for burnout. Along with ditching the soy, Oprah would do better to learn about good fats (including natural saturated fats) and weight training and interval training, with judicious resting.

Jennie McCarthy is definitely a mixed bag too, but suggesting that perhaps huge loads of vaccines shouldn't be put on tiny children's immune systems all at once is hardly "out there." When I was a kid we got a handful of vaccinations. Mostly I suffered through mumps, measles and chicken pox. Now kids get about 3 dozen vaccines, and sometimes quite a few of them together. That's a big science experiment going on affecting the most vulnerable members of society.

"Just to be very clear... I am NOT a Scientologist... nor am I familiar with all their practices. HOWEVER... they are SPOT ON when it comes to psychiatry and if you pull up my Bio and my posting history... !" - Dr. Julien Arbor

Wow..." Dr." Julien Arbor, really? Scientologists are spot on when it comes to psychiatry ?! Not only do you not have the credentials to give a professional opinion on medical science, it seems to me you also fails in your own field!

Given that I have now been correct regarding every single diagnosis that I informed the physicians that I had, been correct regarding every single diagnostic test that I suggested, been correct regarding the treatment that I SHOULD have received... that also would have stopped the progression of my own Adrenal Insufficiency, Acquired Brain Injury, and now Epilepsy... perhaps I SHOULD have those credentials!

I especially disagree with Jenny McCarthy's rant against vaccines for young children. I'm a special education teacher who has worked with young children with autism for nearly 15 years. It's a complete disservice to parents of these children for McCarthy to imply that her son has been cured from autism. There is NO cure. Children can certainly make progress and become independent and more typical, but this takes very intensive--often expensive and time-consuming--intervention that many parents cannot afford. It's wrong for McCarthy to (a) make parents feel guilty for immunizing their children and (b) for claiming these children can be cured. I'm dissappointed that oprah didn't investigate autism further before having McCarthy on the show.

The entire world needs to get a sense of humor! Menopause is not a life and death situation and NO ONE person has the responsibility to inform us as to what we should do. It has to be a personal choice based on investigation, education, family history and experimentation. What works for one may not work for the other. Women are not stupid and in the past 5-6 years, have become their own "experts". They rely more on each other than they do the doctors, pharmaceutical companies or the FDA.

Let's all laugh and get along! See the first (and only) menopausal cartoon @ http://www.minniepauz.com

It's nice to see a major news outlet exposing Oprah for the quack she is. It's frightening to think about her legions of followers and their absolute and complete credulity.

I used to be one of Jenny McCarthy's biggest fans all the way back to her MTV days when she was the wild woman with a heart. Now the very sound of her voice can send me into an anxiety attack. In the United States, over half a million people, of which a majority are children, were born with a Primary Immune Deficiency better known to most people as a "bubble boy" disease. Impaired genetically, these children are unable to fight off invading pathogens. Giving these children a normal life as possible is maintained through intravenous immunoglobulin, or IVIG therapy, which temporarily replaces missing antibodies and helps protect against infections. The problem that Ms. McCarthy creates by spouting off her opinions-- Bubble boy children cannot be vaccinated with live virus vaccines like measles, mumps, rotavirus, BCG, and chicken pox (varicella). Nor do these children have the ability to fight off any of these diseases. So in two, three years from now when my child comes in contact with her child who has unknowingly contracted the chicken pox virus, she will lovingly nurse her child back to health and life will go in. I will be burying mine. Sound melodramatic? Just the horrifying facts that we live with everyday. Sometimes opinions are not just innocent statements, sometimes they destroy other people's lives. Especially when given the stamp of approval by someone with as much influence as Oprah Winfrey. I had no idea Ms. Winfrey had given Jenny McCarthy free reign on her stage without presenting facts such as those that affect my child. I am beyond disgusted, I am terrified to think that there are parents out there that might believe this stuff. Your sick child, the one who came down with an illness that could have been prevented by a vaccine, is a death warrant to my child. As always, there are two sides to every story and Oprah should know better. I wonder how I can get an invitation to the show to present this other side. I hope the people reading this board have better sense or at least the decency to truly read the acts. In the meantime, please give to the Immune Deficiency Foundation or the Jeffrey Modell Foundation.

Oprah if one goes to her website has a loophole and disclaimer under the contact/submit form- it states that Oprah can and will not pay for a story or words submitted to Harpo- it also states the information and dates of the words and submission can be changed, with out discussion. You submit to her and ABC you then lose the right to your experience, the experience, idea, plan, product is no longer kept confidential- the disclaimer states it can be shared and sold, without a right given to its author. And you wierd, old pathetic celebrity leeches out there watching T.V. and reading online. Her entourage of celebrity wealth, protects her-,actually she claims its an "aura"- when actually its business connections and Hollywood power players...health food and a really expensive lifestyle which can purchase clean everything.

And lets cite a quick example here- if Oprah were a mayor (MAYOR), and worked for the government- and the public wrote to her office, and under the contact form of her government offices submit contact form it stated, as it does under Oprah's contact form online right now as of this writing July 10, 2009, that Mayor Winfrey retains the right to your words, can sell them to companies, change your information and dates of submission- would the public trust her?

She'd be in prison. Spell that P-R-I-S-O-N. Prison.

Oprah is not a healer of the sick- she tries to ail others and profits from their well being. If Miss Winfry, truly cared for the ill- she would not persecute criminals- which who by her standards are truly the ill of the world. Never does she help criminals besides herself. People who molest others, or killers, rapists, homeboys turned to crime all are to be punished- their personal stories and history also are portrayed in a negaive light- and she goes on witch hunts for individuals she wants to use as an example,..all the while using a liberal consumer- their compassionate weakness and pyschology to make $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$. Money talks and so does Oprah- but Oprah speaks she is speaking for others- only one catch she takes money which could have gone to the originator and person with the experience whose words are no longer theirs.

I have an inbox full- just full of spam mail from Oprah's show which is sent to my account because she sold my information and so do millions of people. Oprah works in publishing, her staff's writers also work in the media.

Humans will always look for a leader, whether it is Buddah, Jesus, Mohammed or Oprah. If Oprah ran for president there would not even have to be an election. Oprah's appeal is emotional not intellectual. The people who come to her defense on here only THINK they are free-thinkers and highly intelligent. They are followers. And followers will always need leaders.

This article was quite the diatribe. Does the author think the average person doesn't have a brain or shouldn't think critically about medical advice? If there is one important thing I've learned over the years, it's to NOT blindly accept my doctor's advice but to do my own research and find the best solution for myself; I am my own best advocate. This questioning isn't an Oprah movement. It's a common sense movement of the people who don't want live their lives on synthetic drugs, who want to get back to grass roots, who want to tap into wisdom and knowledge and not rely soley on science to solve our problems. Sounds to me like this journalist is out of touch with the average person and needs to get a grip.

  • Posted By: namewithheld2012 @ 06/21/2009 4:57:47 PM

As a medical professional, my advice is that you all need to become involved in your own health care. This means questioning everything not just the doctor, but Oprah as well. The only type of medicine that matters is evidence based, which is not what Oprah is advocating during many of these segments (anti-vaccine movement). The article although biased, raised many numerous good issues. I have seen many people who could have been treated for a common disease, but their belief in "the secret" or other mystical claims caused their disease to progress to incurable stages.

You need to do the research yourself along with the help of your medical doctor. They'll be able to help you understand what is going on in your body. Along with doctoral advice, read peer-reviewed, evidence based scientific journals which are at the center of medicine and any science for that matter. Your doctor reads these to stay on top of the practice of medicine and research.

Many of the reliefs you're experiencing through these alternative therapies are simply placebo, but this does not discredit them. However, it does harm when people place all their belief into one basket. This is what the article was attempting to get at. It was not a direct attack on Oprah, but something to generate a debate which can only lead to better health, something we all want.

And as a side note: The anti-vaccine movement is very worrisome. Please follow my advice and research for yourself how effective vaccines have been at public health. The fact that parents are worried about vaccinating their children is completely unfounded and due to the dissemination of misplaced fear due to people like Jenny McCarthy.

    • Posted By: namewithheld2012 @ 06/21/2009 5:00:30 PM

I also want to add that Oprah's response to this criticism is great, "I trust the viewers, and I know that they are smart and discerning enough to seek out medical opinions to determine what may be best for them."

This is great on her part, but the fact is that the majority of her viewers are not intelligent or perhaps not active enough to seek out and complete the research necessary. That's why the watch Oprah.

      • Posted By: pencilcase @ 06/23/2009 6:04:56 AM

Actually the majority of Oprah's viewers are intelligent, that's why they are watching first rate entertainment, the exploring of taboo topics and why her book club has been such a success. It's Newsweeks readers that are not intelligent which is why Newsweek insults their intelligence by cherry picking a few controversial shows out of thousands of episodes, misrepresenting those shows, all the while hoping their dumb readers wont catch on to all the adds they get from big pharma during a time when Newsweek has become increasingly desperate to maintain advertising revenue.

    • Posted By: pencilcase @ 06/23/2009 6:03:37 AM

I've read the Secret & it doesn't tell people to not get medical advice. Sure out of the millions of people who read it, some will misapply it, but this applies to any self-help including sleeping pills. Just because someone believes in the proven power of positive thinking does not mean they ignore standard medicine. That's like saying it's wrong to teach people to eat healthy because then they wont feel the need to take medicine. For someone who claims to believe in evidence based medicine, you have no statistical evidence that the Secret causes poor medical choices, only cherry picked anecdotes. That makes you no different from Jenny McCarthy who also bases her views on anecdotes.

The fact of the matter is that when someone becomes ill, and depending upon the severity of his/her illness, if you do not have the means, the knowledge, and the resilience to get rid of your illness, you are on your own. It is a sad fact, but a true one. So, what to do if you are in such a predicament? I believe we are fully responsible for our own health, and if this means to go to medical school to learn how to treat our own cancer, so be it.

I dont know about Oprah in the US but here in South east asia, we know that she is just doing a job as a saleswoman and many of us are aware that most things she says or promote are crap. I mean, health system in the US and EUrope (ive experience living in Europe) are nothing compared to Asia.

    • Posted By: Yesyou @ 06/20/2009 8:53:06 PM

She is a saleswoman and a very good one to the point where some will believe anything she says, despite the fact she is an entertainer. Newsweek was right on the money about her so-called medical experts, like Suzanne Somers and Jennie McCarthy. In simpler terms, Hollywood celebrities are no more political experts than they are medical experts. I'm your ordinary average American citizen who is college educated. I am also smart enough to never buy into what Oprah and her colleagues say as the Gospel Truth because it isn't.
