I 've watched Oprah from time to time and over the years I have found myself changing the channel more often. I still find Oprah interesting , entertaining and even educational (at times). I do not turn to Oprahs' show for medical advice. I have always found that Oprah's best shows have been related to social issues. Whether it be a story of people making a difference in their own communities or stories of injustice around the world...these are the stories that have made Oprah great. Oprah is (was) a journalist. If I want to learn about health, beauty and fitiness I watch something else.

Thank you Newsweek for your unflinching look at Oprah, the self proclaimed expert of everything. She hides behind disclaimers knowing that most of her audience is not checking with their physicians or looking beyond her so called wisdom. Integrity should begin with her, the one with power and a voice and it is shameful she rakes in the money but shuffles off her responsibility.

In a society that is addicted to reality shows it shouldn't be surprising people are so easily led in important life choices by someone with no credentials but it is still disturbing that so many follow.

Weather Oprah was presenting Suzanne Somers as an expert or not, too many times mainstream (Western) medicine has dismissed fringe ideas too only eat crow later.

I'm not debating the merits of Mrs. Somers ideas, but what bothers me was the slight arrogance this article was written -- I know the author has to make the piece as enticing as possible, but I think the angle at which was chosen is irresponsible to the journalism community; too much of media is taking this route, but it keeps the ads clicking, flashing, expanding, etc. Isn't that what it is all about?

I think this article is totally on-target. There are many people who rely on Oprah for medical advice (hard to believe as that it) and they are being done a great disservice when Oprah puts on these amateurs with their half-baked quasi-medical advice.

  • Posted By: SrAN @ 06/01/2009 1:47:15 PM

I think the issue here is simple. the things that she is promoting is not good for everyone. From what I have read in this article, the author just wants people to be more aware of what they are doing to themselves. First off Oprah, Jenny McCarthy and Susan Sommers are NOT medical experts. They came on the show to give their opinion and show people what works for them. That does not mean that it works for everyone. For those out there who are sticking right by Oprah, wake up, she is on television to entertain. Not everything she says is gospel. Speak with medical professionals who went to school for this stuff and who actually have experience and a degree to back up what they are saying.

Mecidcal conventional doctors have not been trained nor have they studied alternative practices so why would we ask them what they do not know and their egos cannot handle questioning..lS. Somers is not preaching her own diagnosis she has interviews with 12 board certified doctors ER..to neurosurgery..and they have the courage to study outside the box...and realize the results of alternative practice..Do you understand the FDA is feediing the economy and the advertisements and prescription abuses make money lots of money and yes this is the manipulation....so when you say how can youi believe in something that the FDA has not approved...I ask you they can only approve what they study Why have they not studied this further after selfevidence of real results..because it cannot be patented and therefore no profit..be your own advocate , study and you will see results and speak up for preventative study......

Oprah fans aren't stupid. We DO consult with a doctor before trying medical advice we hear on her show, and she tells us to do so. The article is insulting in that it assumes women who are home during the day are too stupid to handle discussions about the latest controversial medical treatment & will recklessly try anything without researching it first. One reason Oprah is so successful is she has enough to respect for her audience to give them information, even controversial & disputed information, & trust that they will know how to use it.

      • Posted By: pdskep @ 06/01/2009 7:29:35 PM

"Oprah fans aren't stupid." Do stupid people know that they are stupid?

        • Posted By: pencilcase @ 06/01/2009 9:50:51 PM

          I don't know. Do you?

      • Posted By: SrAN @ 06/01/2009 2:49:12 PM

I dont think I ever called anyone stupid but I did point out that many people take what she says for gospel and I think that is where Oprah is going wrong. If she is going to open up a platform on a topic then she needs to open it to everyone including those with opinions and those with facts. From everything I see she really sticks by the people who come on her show who have opinions. Hell, she gave Jenny McCarthy her own talk show! How does that not prove that she is backing up an agenda that has no scientific basis?

  • Posted By: HypnotiqOne @ 06/02/2009 8:03:32 PM

This article is unfair. Every news program promotes "health advice" and are not held to the same type of accountability as Newsweek suggests Oprah should. The journalists are really attempting to attack Oprah's influence, not the advice given on her show. And they should have a created a more critical argument in that regard.

  • Posted By: SeitenNari @ 06/02/2009 6:49:43 PM

    @pencilcase

Actually... no. Consider how prevalent depression is in academic types at the highest level. Have they succeeded? Yes. Did they use "The Secret"? No. Thinking positively certainly can't hurt, but if it's not possible in certain situations, it's not going to stop otherwise driven people from being successful.

Put in the context of the whole article, I think Kosova and Wingert have valuable things to say about Oprah's Secret. Besides, Oprah's success isn't the sort of thing most of us would want for ourselves (I hope, at least...).

  • Posted By: bkempin @ 06/02/2009 7:13:24 PM

I find it interesting that your article on Oprah's "Crazy Talk" didn't mention that Jenny McCarthy, by following her pooh-poohed "mommy instinct," pursued a dietary regimen and therapies that allowed her son to recover from autism. Many other children with autism have improved dramatically by following similar treatments. That's why Jenny says, "My science is named Evan."

  • Posted By: skyblueclara @ 05/30/2009 7:56:34 PM

I have a love hate relationship with Oprah. I believe she is truly blessed and has done alot of good. However when she
started to push the "secret" i stopped watching her show. This new age mystic Oprah can practice the Secret because
she has a few billion stashed away and an arsonal of experts and assistants at her disposal.. If i waited for the cosmos to straighten out my life as my grandma said I'd have a wish in one hand and *** in the other. I just dont get Oprah now

    • Posted By: pencilcase @ 06/02/2009 6:41:08 PM

I'm so sick of people whining about The Secret. All the Secret is saying is that if you focus on your goals & think positive, your chances of success will be increased. To me that's just common sense. Sure there might be a little hocus pocus thrown in, but you could say the same for the Bible and I don't see Newsweek attacking that. And if anyone knows the secret to success in life, its someone who went from a poor sexually abused black female to the billionaire Queen of All Media Presidential King Maker.

    • Posted By: Cazador72 @ 05/30/2009 9:00:20 PM

Except that she wasn't always rich. I'll be happy to take success advise from someone who went from a dirt poor, pregnant teenager (something the author of this article didn't bother to research or mention) to billionaire in less than 30 years and without doing anything illicit.

Here's a tip, it certainly wasn't because of "The Secret."

Up to 169 deaths... over 45000 preventable illnesses not prevented... Oprah should be ashamed she's promoting the anti-vac crowd. There are real world consequences to things.

It needed to be said, Newsweek. Thank you.

This was one of the fairest, most well-researched articles I've read in a while. Plus, to go after a "sacred cow" like Oprah is gutsy!

To Bob Nathans: I'm Black. I read the article and found it to be fair, balanced, and well-written.This isn't about Oprah's race, it's about her lack of good judgement in the guests she has on her show and the unproven medical practices she allows to be promoted. Her actions are very irresponsible and the two writers were correct to expose it for the good of the nation. Her show has now become a major health concern. I'm Black and I did not find this article to be racist; informative yes, racist, no.

    • Posted By: pencilcase @ 06/02/2009 5:02:59 PM

On the web you can be whatever race you want.

  • Posted By: chigal @ 06/02/2009 12:27:06 PM

Personally, I didnt like the article...not because it bashed Oprah or exposed some of the things she discusses as false... I didnt like the article because it was a poorly written, one-sided editorial. As a journalist, you have a responsibility to objectively review a topic and it is quite clear that the writer neither likes or agrees with Oprah. That is absolutely fine but dont write it like some objective expose. Oprah is an entertainer. Plain and simple. And while you may not agree with her 'mission,' I do think she wants to see people be happier and healthier in their lives. At the end of the day, is that so wrong?

I agree that her science around vaccinations is really bad, but I think Oprah operates on the assumption that people "know" about the mainstream stuff and that she is just educating them on an alternative. And that should have been the intent of your article...that Oprah either naively trusts that Americans are really doing their own research and are educated on current events. Bashing someone like this article did is more like what you would see in US or OK. I am disappointed in Newsweek for publishing this.

Explain how pointing out the truth is "mean-spirited."

  • Posted By: lapaul @ 06/02/2009 3:01:14 PM

iThe fact that this is the cover story is the very reason the new incarnation of Newsweek is doomed. This is an abomiinable piece of journalism. And...hello...I'd like to think that is an informed opinion since I am the chairman of the journalism department at a major university. Further, how unfortunate that the writers chose to pass such severe judgment on a woman who brings so many people in the world so much joy. Oprah is influential, but to say that she is dangerously influencing people to compromise their health sort of diminishes the audience, doesn't it? Oprah and her staff are informing people of options they may not have ever known about. She is not telling anyone to defy western medicine or to do a raindane to cure cancer. You know Newsweek had already lost my attention for any number of journalistic missteps over the past few years, but now....well, now I"m moving on. Way on away from Newsweek. My guess is that over time advertisers and consumers will do the same, en masse.

I had such high hopes for the new Newsweek under Meacham's guidance. Am I disappointed to read on the first launch his comments about agreeing with President Obama that we don't need to dump things down for the American public. This piece is not a product of critical thinking or shedding any new light to the topic. It's a hit piece from writers who don't even watch the show. I watch the show now and then, and I actually appreciate the information the show makes available for the public to decide for themselves. Oprah never says you should do one thing over the other. She has guests that come on to the show to present their views/opinions. If Newsweek assumes that the viewers are that stupid to take everything on TV as gospel, then Newsweek is dumbing things down. Such disappointment in Meacham for sensationalize a topic to get "rating." I won't be renewing the magazine when it expires this summer.

  • Posted By: Maxim @ 06/02/2009 2:12:54 PM

I thought the writers did an excellent job of exposing what is a very dangerous form of communication each week: The Oprah Show. Her topics are usually one-sided and poorly researched and not backed up by medical science, yet, she endorses them as such. Her new-age thinking is fine for her own personal life -- but it should end there. Her show should be balanced and informative about relative topics for all audiences. I'm afraid that she's reverting back to her earlier tacky days of programming tabloid trash to maintain herr ratings and keep her in the life style she has fallen in love with. Again, I thought the article was very well-written, fair and, unlike most of her shows, informative.

I was thrilled to see an article proclaiming what I have been saying for years! I blame Oprah for the mass hysteria society in which we live. And now, her unchecked, manipulative, "money can by anything" performances have seeped into the political, she created a tragedy that will affect the health of this nation forever: she elected a President. She is a case of media and money going overboard to the extreme.
