The Hundred-Year War

Obama's speech was great. But one day's effort means little against a century of enmity.

Today we heard a visionary speak. We heard President Barack Obama's Cairo speech and in it was the "what" of his vision. Not the "how" that many wanted. No, it was the "what" of his vision-- his vision of Freedom for all human beings, his vision that every human being counts, every human being matters.

His vision makes us ask this question: why do we give up our Freedom? Why? And to whom? As President Obama pointed out, we only have a very short time on the planet. Why or why do we humans ever give up even an ounce of our Freedom to other human beings: our Freedom of speech, of education, of choosing our life partner, of religion -- Freedom of every kind.

Some generations, some people have been blessed with a visionary: a Gandhi, a Mandela, a Martin Luther King. We are blessed with President Barack Hussein Obama.

    Blessed be!

Blogger is job title? How is get paid for that?

      • Posted By: jimbo3800 @ 06/05/2009 7:50:10 PM

Oh, there are lot's of paid bloggers on this site. At least Jan Iddings, aka Miss Sheep, is honest enough to identify herself as such. Most of them, such as 40yrRetard (or whatever his name is these days) claim not to be paid bloggers but really are. Around the election there was non-stop paid blogging from a paid blogger named Nins (or Ninscompoop, as I like to refer to her).

They both went absolutely apesh*t when I 'outed' them.

"Most of them, such as 40yrRetard (or whatever his name is these days) claim not to be paid bloggers but really are."

Based on what, your own high-and-mighty say-so?

You too good to have to actually prove an accusation?

        • Posted By: Vigilance @ 06/08/2009 2:35:03 PM

I must have missed it when Nins was revealed to be a paid blogger.

Was she really a paid blogger, or did you just happen to suspect her, accuse her, and then convince yourself that you were right without proof, the way you have promoted suspicion of so many others?

You brought back fond memories of my stay at Marquette University. I took a number of classes where I had no idea what thery were talking about and we both spoke english. Keep up the good work.

One hopes he can, and will, fulfill any potential destiny as a statesman that he may have to grant to history. That history is yet to be written.

Obama delivered a powerful speech. Yes, does it matter?

Whether it would have any profound impact on the Islamic world is certainly far too early to gauge. The Muslims want ACTION.

It is rather a strange coincident. Many of the words and ideas he used are strikingly similar to what some of us have been saying and advocating for years.

Verily, his goal of forging a closer tie between the US and Islamic nations cannot be anything but noble. He is an idealist and speaks his mind boldly and affectionately. However, one would suspect if he really speaks for most of the Americans.

For the sake of world peace, let us hope that his ideal will BEAR FRUIT; it does not matter when, albeit the sooner the better.

      He speaks for me.

      • Posted By: jimbo3800 @ 06/05/2009 7:54:43 PM

And he does not speak for me.

I am beyond sick and tired of hearing how the Muslims have been "humiliated", and want "action", and my personal favorite, always repeated onto a live CNN camera, "the Jews are sucking our blood". Now really, what in the hell does that even mean?

All you lefties and Islamofacist apologists need to get a grip.

        • Posted By: Vigilance @ 06/08/2009 2:33:11 PM

Get used to it. I don't envy you your anger in the face of what is indeed looking to be a rising tide of sentiment towards peace.

well the death of 600000 innocent Iraqs(Muslims) becuase of an illegal and immoral war atarted by America and it allies can not be forgotten just by fancy speaches from Obama....The Handlers of Obama (Zebigbew Brezinski) again trying to exploit the muslims as they were exploited before In Afghanistan against former USSR.

Oh gosh!! Such blatant distortion of facts!!! It is not Islam but Hindus who discovered math! India's Ayurveda is the oldest form of medicine! That apart I loved Obama's "reimagine and remake the world" rhetoric. He is a pragmatic centrist and not the liberal ideologue as caricatured sometimes. Commendable speech overall and the most audacious from an American politician thus far. I can recall some of his eloquent words from last year- of "acting outside the categories that define us" and "choosing unity over divison". I fail to understand why he has endorsed division in that case then for Israel-Palestine? This is an opportune time to induce Israelis to learn from India and give up the "Jewish homeland" delirium. Because we know that nations whose foundations are built on religious and ethnic divides are doomed to failure in the long run.

I have listened to plenty of Obama's speeches but this one here is the most blatant pandering speech I have ever heard him give. This guy was TOTALLY pandering to Muslims. And of course while pandering to the "Muslim World" he had to throw in some jabs at the United States. Why is the President of the United States continuing to go overseas and knock the very country he represents? Why is the President of the United States pandering to the "Muslim World"?

  • Posted By: Marquette70 @ 06/05/2009 2:24:39 PM

Maybe we can find the guys who dealt with the "moderates from Iran during the Regan administration" and turn this terrorist thing around. Yes, there is a very small number of terrorists in this area, but there are too many like the quiet people in this country over the killing of an abortion doctor. They would never kill anyone, but they sure won't help in catching them or feel to bad at what they did.

  • Posted By: shalmcginnis @ 06/05/2009 11:05:46 AM

I don't think we listened to the same speech. Maybe you didn't hear what he said??Again he talked about how the USA was the bad guy. I personally am tired of his rhetoric. Why does the media not tell it like it really is?

    • Posted By: Vigilance @ 06/05/2009 11:43:37 AM

Because the truth is a complex thing and your definition of "how it really is" is pretty narrow?

  • Posted By: MichaelX @ 06/05/2009 10:00:30 AM

Well, Duh! Oboyama has a very agrandized view of himself, and that is typical of a so-called "minority" that only wants to be a good dog for it's handlers. Who is really running this country? Are we to let this blatant kiss-assing of inherent beligerents continue? Impeachment! Oh, islam, stick it where the sun dont shine!

    well mr.hirsch
100 years of enmity seems rather a short sighted statement -
the world has been at war since kane and abel -imagine one as a muslim and the other as a christian and you get the idea -
it's all about survival and sources and of course .....

President Obama continues to mislead as leadership, why is he the voice of reason again in the Middle East? If he wants to lead the United States he should reduce our troops in the Muslim Countries not send more. Then, by actions, he will be judged, not politics and false words.

  • Posted By: Monachello @ 06/05/2009 8:31:10 AM

Obama clearly understands that 1 speech can't transform a flawed relationship overnite; frankly no one who listened to the speech is likely to be that naive either. However, symbols matter and he is beginning what could be at least an 8 year process on his watch with a hand of friendship and mutual respect rather than a fist of self-righteousness; a big difference rhetorically. Leaders in the Arab world should respond in kind. This is what it means to lead in this rapidly changing world. The follow-up needs to be regular, on-going dialogue at every level of government AND more cultural, business, professional, athletic, travel, and individual exchanges among private citizens. The U.S. State Department should redouble its efforts to facilliate these exchanges and leaders of government, industry, and culture in the Arab world should do the same. The more we know and share about each other lives the more our efforts at cooperation will be honest, effective and long-lasting, rather than shallow and superficial. Obama has shifted the paradigm; other leaders in all walks of life in both America and the Arab world should step up as well.

obamas speech was intellectually flawed and not so great -but he is still the best of a bad lot

the paradox of being obama and a speech in an incarcerated cairo and coptsShare

he never once mentioned KASHMIR with 20 miliion muslims and a global tinderbox even as a peaceful negotiate whereas he promised in november it must be resolved peacefully .
-AND obviously omitted the fact that it was not muslims who murdered 6 million jews -
SO obama thinks that muslim women must be allowed to cover their faces if its their choice but i am afraid that is not islamic law and how can you drive a car or go to a court or travel when you cannot be identified as man or woman -
then he conveniently forgot that he has sanctioned 150 billion for war in afg-iraq ,
2 muslim countries his country has occupied for 8 yrears now -...
while giving the shameless paki admin 1.5 billion for killing 15000 compatriots .
i have never seen a man so abusing the name hussain -allah forgive him and us too as that entity is the greatest martyr ever -
while he talked of ANDULACIA -and muslim tolerance -he forgot that muslims were totally wiped out from spain and sicily in a ruthless genocide -
is he not a real paradox and who writes his speeches is another greater paradox -
he than started talking to the COPTIC AUDIENCE IN THE HALL -who are the most pampered minority anywhere in the world and his oratorial style is getting to be the same haranguing BUT -YET -IF -america will -america hopes ,

sorry but you have 6 months more mr .husssain and your time will be running out then as for being out of iraq by 2012 -i think that is a fantasy that no muslim believes and the issue of west bank is completely out of his grasp like kashmir -
i feel soory for this socialist liberal who is only a face to american corporate malice and global greed -its not working even though he is a good soul and an integrate man -
yet he had to praise MOBARAK WHILE PROMOTING DEMOCRACY IN ARABLAND -how cuckoo can i get even in cuckooland
on the plusses he can say salam o laikum
and knows one of the commonest and most quoted koranic verses -
also he managed to impose a martial law on cairo as 18 million people were incarcerated while 1800 copt came to cheer his speech -thats just what i heard and saw -
but my sister is like most ordinary muslims too -she was very delighted he quoted the koran as if that is a favour to muslims and islam -i think that notion is downright reeking of inferiority complex garbed in patronage as if islam even needs muslims let alone obama ,the fact is it is vice versa -
and 1.5 billion muslims are just being given lip service but let us see how long it can last between now and december -
the reality is when allah wants he will send a tariq or a saladin or MEHMET or mahmud -just like HE SENT kamal pasha and jinnah to save the muslim herd -until then obama can rule the roost with mrs.clinton and of course michelle and the cute LITTLE DOG who is adorable of all the CHANGES MADE .

There's a commercial in the U.S. that says "friends don't allow other friends to drive drunk" which means a true friend saves you from harming yourself. Barack Obama is a true friend of Israel because if Israel continues on its present course of taking more and more land there will only be two solutions left to the conflict: either keep the Palestinians in a giant prison without any rights or else have a bi-national State. Neither of these two options are acceptable, and the best choice is a two State solution.

The settlers take badly needed money away from the elderly, the poor, the hungry and the disabled and it's long past the time that those funds were spent inside Israel to help those who truly need it.

There is a fantasy among the right wing in Israel that either the Palestinians will disappear or else go to Jordan. They don't understand the grievances of people who see someone from Chicago or New York move to a settlement on land taken from them who now call it theirs. The settlers have made a two State solution close to impossible.

I am a moderate Democrat and a fervent supporter of Israel and I believe that President Obama is a true friend of Israel and a true friend sometimes has to tell you things you may not want to hear but in the long run are in your best interests, and he said those things yesterday in his speech.
