Absolutely, says MSNBC's Joe Scarborough. How he'd restore American conservatism.

What they should be thinking about is what they can do to help America survive, after years of misrule that has ended up destroying every financial instrument in the country, along with that vicious health care system of theirs and an environmental record that would suggest they have a subconscious desire to destroy the planet we live on. Not to mention a poisonous political environment and a Drug War that has cost trillions while doing nothing to stop the flow of drugs along with turning our cities into war zones and American left holding 25 percent of the world's incarcerated prisoners.

What the hell have these people done for us? And what the hell do they have planned, should they ever get in power again during our lifetimes?

Why don't we leave slavery to the states? Same old, tired, sexist Republican crap.

    Hello Newsweek,

Can???t begin to tell you how disappointed I am in Newsweek. Guess when your magazine is a part of MSNBC you are unable to be unbiased ??? speak no ill of our colleague as shown by Jon Meacham in his interview with Joe Scarborough on Morning Joe.

Sure Joe is a great guy. However, America is in real trouble. The GOP almost ran the nation into the ground. Where was Joe on this issue. Cultural Conservatives have a right to live as they please. When people are losing their homes, jobs and businesses because of the last eight years then there is no defence. The republicans can never have power again. They simply do not care about little people. There is no proof. Obama will change the landscape for the next 100 years.

when you are a born a southern racist it does not matter what you right or do you will alyways be that which you are no matter how you sugar coat it.

Scarborough is exactly right that the GOP will have to take some responsibility for the various corporate scandals and the role of deregulation in facilitating them before it can appeal to independents again.

Sad state of affairs, any party that need RACIST/POOR/UNEDUCATED PEOPLE/INDIVIDUAL THAT WILL VOTE AGAINST THEIR BEST INTEREST these are the people that form the base of the Republican party what do you expect

First we hear that the Republicans attracted only rich old white people. Now we hear that the poor, uneducated people are voting Republican. They must be leaving the Democrat Party en masse. That is great news for the Republicans.

I'm guessing that your "hearing" voices in your head that really shouldn't be there. You do realize that a book was written that included in its title, "Rush Limbaugh is A Big Fat Idiot". I'm guessing that you haven't read that book, or any other book during your lifetime, and so is anyone else that comprehends just how worse off most of the world is after George W. Bush. Hey, is this harsh enough for you? If not I've no problem getting even harsher, because Fascists don't understand anything else.

        • Posted By: bjsassy @ 06/07/2009 11:48:24 AM

mbronner. There you go again. You are completely off the topic. My selection of books are a little more literate than your selection. I am reading an excellent book, "The American Lion,"written by Newsweek's editor, Jon Meacham. BTW, my earlier comment was sarcasm. Do you know what that means?

Have you ever noticed how in all nations the misery index is pegged to how much of a sway conservatives have in those countries, whether they be in Asia, Europe, Africa or the Middle East? And where religious edicts made into law are NOT permitted, where conservatism is not allowed to take root, the happiness index in those countries is much higher than anywhere else. Countries where conservatives hold sway are generally poorer, more likely to be attacked from without by it's neighbors (and far more likely to attack those neighbors), have a lower life expectancy, a higher mortality rate for babies, more crime, more prisoners and less education.

Our most serious enemies throughout our history, the really noxious ones who have drawn the most blood from our people and used up the most treasure have been considered within their societies to have been conservatives - including our enemies in the old Soviet Union whom we might have considered as being on the "Left," but who in their own countries.were definitely considered to be conservative. I think even the old Confederacy proves the point even further.

This not only holds true nowadays, but seems to have been at a truism throughout history. The bottom line is, conservatism is a recipe for misery. Conservatives create misery for themselves and their neighbors.

    • Posted By: bjsassy @ 06/06/2009 9:10:02 PM

The Soviet Union was definitely left. All Communism and socialism ideology are considered left-wing. What countries do you consider conservative? Please give specific examples of these miserable, unhappy conservative countries. I am assuming that you consider all the Muslim countries, with their authoritarian governments and lack of human rights, especially toward woman, as conservative. Give me break. You are certainly allowed to have your own opinion, but you are not allowed to have your own facts.

Uh, do you remember David Duke, the FASCIST? He is a REPUBLICAN. You know that. So, don't throw your extremism back on those that wanted to actually let Katrina victims cross a bridge, which was denied to them by the likes of you. THOSE FACTS ARE NOT JUST MINE.

        • Posted By: bjsassy @ 06/07/2009 11:43:30 AM

mbroneer. Uh, David Duke is not a country. Hello! Apparently, you define an extremist as someone who is searching for facts and truth.

Going by charlie cook and the website 538 it would seem the politicians that get elected mostly cause voters hate or fear the other guy. So is the above idea of Joe's hateable or anything to be afraid of. That is the question! I will be back with the answer! once Joes idea is tried out for the first time ever! Silly Voters! State's right's are a myth now. Welcome to the police state! Pot gets you jail longer that child molestation, Raising the flag in your front yard, can now be deemed offensive. Hence fined(yes! Even On Veteran's day, and don't ask me how I know). Both parties lose simultaneously, everytime one wins. Hence It's time to stop Blaming the other guy and be quite. I will go first!

GOP must have one of the best times now. They were controled by disgusting right-wing conservative leaders, such as Bush the Moron - no more. And thanks to liberal idiot Obama, nobody of independent would vote for Democrats for next 12 years, starting from 2010 elections.

If the Republicans want to be what they were intended to be; they will need to reread Plato's Republic and redo their platform consistent with Plato's version of a Republic. Plato's Republic was concerned with the "good". It was intended that their elected officials would be statesman not politicians. Statesman that are trained to be good public servants concerned with the welfare of their people. Plato envisioned a nation based on efficient function, justice, equity, wisdom , courage and temperance not greed, advarice, maliciousness and arrogance.

Smart conservatives are telling their comrades to shut up, but beyond that there's no calls for change.]

They love their Rush Limbaugh, but to a majority of Americans he's simply a pornographic spectacle. And their endless preoccupation with reproductive issues would suggest that they're not just mean spirited but mentally ill.

These are the people who would have put Sarah Palin a heartbeat away from the Presidency. I think that pretty well disqualifies a party from ever, ever, ever again being afforded the slightest bit of respectability.

    • Posted By: bjsassy @ 06/06/2009 10:02:51 PM

Joe Biden is a heartbeat away from the presidency. Nancy Pelosi is two heartbeats away. Now that is really scary!

"Harsh Rhetoric was a source of pride" to Republicans. Pathetic excuses for politicians let alone human beings.

  • Posted By: bjsassy @ 06/06/2009 9:45:49 PM

Joe says in the interview, "One of my greatest concerns has been the development of different media outlets that allow Americans to sit down and plug into whatever media outlet they chose to plug into to reinforce their preexisting beliefs. You see that on too many TV news shows, radio shows, too many Web sites. A conservative can wake up in the morning and never have his or her views challenged. And the same is true for liberals."

That is definitely a true statement. Nevertheless, Republicans and conservatives are much more informed than Democrats or liberals. Most of the major media outlets are now left, including Newsweek. Conservatives still read left leaning websites or watch the major network news, but the liberals would never turn on Fox or read some of the more conservative websites. They keep ranting and ranting about Rush Limbaugh. Even President Obama makes digs about him. Hey, folks, Rush is a political commentator. He is not the news or the leader of the party.

Lately, the media have been piling it on regarding the Republican Party. Either they pronounce the Republicans dead, doomed and disconnected or they are offering "helpful" advice on how the GOP can become more like the Democrats. Please. If the Republican Party has become so significant, why are the libs so afraid? They are kicking the downed GOP as hard as they can in the hopes that they will stay down. The Dems want to hurry and introduce all of these huge social programs that will make the citizenry more dependent on big government. Well, it ain't going to work.

As an over 50 Christian conservative, I have to say that I find Obama to be a moderate conservative, and I strongly support his nomination of Sotomayor. As for Republicans, I find them to be somewhat frightening. If Ronald Reagan were running all over again today, he would run as a Democrat.

  • Posted By: Mimi13 @ 06/06/2009 8:51:35 PM

The comparison between Jon Stewart and Limpbaugh is not especially apt. Jon Stewart said during the last election campaign that if young people were getting most the news from his show they would not very well informed. I wonder if Rush would have the guts to say the same thing about his precious dittoheads.

  • Posted By: TJ the Grouch @ 06/06/2009 7:51:25 PM

As a long time conservative I resent the implication that I am, therefore, a Republican. I wish we could wrest conservatism as a movement away from the cultists who admire their drug-crazed Rush. As long as that clique presides over the GOP, neither I nor anybody in my family will cast a vote for them.

  • Posted By: bogie_dennis54@hotmail.com @ 06/06/2009 3:15:00 PM

There is NOTHING moderate when it comes to the Republican Party. Just keep criticizing and turning off voters. I love watching all these people turn to the Democratic Party.

The Republican Party is already beginning to be irreverent.

THE PROBLEM IS THE AMERICAN LIBERAL HAS BEEN ABLE TO WAKE UP EVERY MORNING AND GO ALL DAY AND NEVER HEAR LIBERALISM, FASCISM, SOCIALISM, PROGRESSIVE RADICALISM CHALLENGED--SCINCE THE 1940'S.
THE PROBLEM IS THAT "MODERATES" HAVE ASSUMED LEADERSHIP OF THE GOP AND INTEND TO KEEP IT, SO AS NOT TO OFFEND THE RADICLE PROGRESSIVES, FASCISTS, SOCIALISTS LIBERAL DEMOCRATS OR THEIR LETHARGIC NEWS OUTLETS.
THIER GAOOL IS TO LEAD THE GOP, WITHOUT HAVING TO LEAD THE COUNTRY (BY ACTUALLY WINNING ELECTED OFFICES). BUT, JUST HOLD SOME POSITION WITHIN THE GOP! IT'S LESS WORK!
THE CHALLENGE FOR THE GOP IS TO GET THE DEADWOOD OUT OF THE GOP! DON'T FUND THEM! THEY DO NOT PUT OUT!

Scarborough is the only voice of reason on MSNBC and it is an anomaly that he has lasted this long. Maddow, Schultz, Schuster, Olbermann, and Matthews are the boiled down essence of odious propaganda from the left and it is no wonder their ratings are in the tank. The afore mentioned, sans Scarborough, are in sum an insidious disease in broadcast journalism and dwarf Limbaugh and Hannity into insignificance. Scarborough's point about Conservative thought being hijacked by the right is valid and the more the nuts on the right attempt to identify with Reagan, the more they reveal themselves as imposters. Reagan would have never presented himself or his philosophy as coarse or engaged in the character assassinations that are widely practiced by both sides. True Conservative thinkers like Edmund Burke, Richard Hooker, and Barry Goldwater would all be crucified as liberals on talk radio if they were still alive. True conservatism espoused moderation and social harmony but it is impossible to put a label on what the term means today as bastardized by the right wing of the Republican party. So with no alternative, the Democrats are laying socialism brick by brick and plank by plank and no one is paying attention.
