you are absolutely right. You have just described the foundation of the KARL ROVE/BUSH DOCTRINE. THEY USED 9\11 as an excuse to lead us into the greatest catastrophe of this century so FAR. IRAQ AND AFGHANISTAN. LOOK AT THE MESS WE HAVE MADE IN THE MIDDLE EAST. THOSE PEOPLE HATE US and we have killed Hundreds of thousands. WORST OF ALL WE SENT OUR YOUNG TO DIE FOR WHAT SO IRAQ CAN HAVE A CORRUPT REGIME UNDER THE NAME OF DEMOCRACY. LOOK AT AFGHANISTAN. THe GOVERNMENT THERE IS SO CORRUPT and so inefficient that we are now in a greater mess than we were before. IT IS JUST ALL WRONG. YOUNG AMERICANS ARE DYING SO HALLIBURTON COULD PROSPER AND MAKE BILLIONS. CHENEY ROVE RUMSFIELD; THESE GUYS ARE SO EVIL AND SO TWISTED; USING BIBLE QUOTES in the name of war. What a bunch of nonsense. Have a military guy scrub your work because a First Sergeant does not set up or place door charges (his positions does not have him doing much breaching at all, dynamic or otherwise). If he is "engineering" those charges in a way as to suggest he is designing them, then he is not out in the field and it's no wonder that he hasn't lost anyone. Being in the engineer corps and an officer in the US Army, I will tell you that tfirst, hose "breaching charges" are all laid out in Army field manuals and require little design at all and second, that placing and initiating those charges is done at the squad leader level and below.
Being an officer I will also say that the intel officer is rarely, if ever outside the wire like my soldier are, screaming at folks to get out of the way so I just don't buy the idea that she expeiences combat induced urges to scream at the errant shopping cart operator who is blocking the Cheerios.
Don't be taken in by these individual's mischaracterizations and exxagerations of their service.

First off sir as a Combat Engineer NCO i know what the manuals say and your wrong go read them again. Explosives charges are based off of the dimensions and material of the object to be demolished. It takes planning and calculations to use the least amount of explosive so as to get the right effect and save these people who are slandering our reputation tax dollars.

As to your comment about a 1SGT doesnt do hands on Demolitions well, you just havent met a good one like 1SGT Dodge who exemplifies the concept of BE, KNOW, DO or you wouldn't have made such an ignorant comment.

Not all soldiers just sit at their desk and tell people what to do once they make rank some of them still actually get their hands dirtyand Lead by example not by mouth.

As for the people who call these soldiers psychopaths, remember to thank them when you see them in the Stores and churches all across this great country for defending your right to insult their patriotism , sacrifice and devotion to a constitution and way of life that yourself didnt fight for.

Tonight when you lay down in your bed with your pillow and air condtioning, after eating a nice meal at the dinner table with your family, try to remember that there is some soldier out there somewhere tonight who gave up those comforts so you can have them . He is out there getting shot at and blown up so you can enjoy those things and then get up the next morning and insult him and his peers on these little blog sites.

      • Posted By: jj812us @ 08/10/2009 11:54:05 PM

Get over it. You expect to be "thanked" on a daily basis for doing a job you signed up for? You are free to quit anytime just like anyone else in any job. I am tired of hearing this "thank the military" nonsense. Talk about arrogant. Do you constantly thank firemen, police, EMTs, garbagemen, and doctors? They are help to keep us safe and healthy as well. Why are the military so special? It is a dirty, tough, tiring, and dangerous job. That is certain. However, you don't desere to have your ass kissed on a daily basis. Quit so I can stop hearing your whining about how we should all thank you.

As a fellow Engineer Officer, you are correct that the school house has breaching guides to supplment the FMs for this type of breach (that was intruduced by Marine Infantry not by us). Unfortunatly, P for Plenty is not always the best option. Especially in an urban environment. If my 1SG had been unable to prepare explosive charges, I probably would have fired him for failing as a leader. You have to know the jobs of your men to the lowest level.

I have had some piece of crap LTs who couldn't even do a route survey, though.

You, sir, are the loser. The people this article is about should be held in the highest regard. Maybe they don't fit into normal society in the manner that you deem fit, but they do have a place, and the jobs that they do are what help keep the boogyman away from your door. Like it or not, we live in a world governed by the controlled use of violence or the threat thereof. Thank God that we have these people willing to place themselves in harms way. Maybe you don't agree with the politics and the reasons behind the wars that we are fighting, but you should damn well learn to appreciate the people that fight them because they are the people that give you the freedom to make your opinions heard. Now, go p!$$ up a rope. You make me sick.

Oh really. Well that's why women need to run the world. There'd be few if any wars. Very few women would send the children they birth into battle. You seem to relish these wonderful guys, they can bust into anyone's homes they want, that's makes them a hero!
That's makes them sociopaths and very dangerous. But then you probably voted for the chicken hawks who never saw a day of war, Bush and his pals. To me, anyone who voted for them especially in 2004 has no valid opinion about anything, cause you're wrong about everything!

        • Posted By: NeoBlackdog @ 06/09/2009 12:23:06 AM

Oh Andrea, if women ran the world we would already be extinct as a species. It would only take one post menopausal, hot flashin' bitch-fit and THE BIG BUTTON would get pushed! Either that or a PMS tirade that would tee off everyone else in the world and cause them to push their BIG BUTTON. Get over yourself.

You think John Kerry had war experience, he got three purple hearts so fast they had to be staged or he was the stupidest office in the Navy. I served over there with guys who had four and five, they never went home early, they also didn't bring a movie camera so they could be filmed coming out of the "Jungle" in full field gear. If I had my way he and Jane Fonda would be rotting in prison today for TREASON. But that is just my idea, everyone else loved him, oh thats right he lost so I guess the Majority disliked him.

    • Posted By: nvoaos @ 06/07/2009 12:43:00 PM

You obviously are they typical officer, which know absolutely nothing about NCO's or other fields in the Army. There are hundreds if not thousands of Army intelligence officers who go into the field. Do you really think that there in not 1 single officer in the Army that doesn't know Arabic, Korean, Russian, or a second language at all? There are hundreds of interrogators who are in military intelligence that go into the field with their troops. No, they are not all warrant officers either. I know 3 officers who went to Afghanistan right after 9/11 (as in less than 1 week after) and all of them were in the field during all the fighting to take the Taliban out of power. I highly doubt you even considered learning a 2nd language because you would think it would be beneath you. You have no idea what other officers do and you saying that you know what they do because you are an officer makes every other officer look completely ignorant. A 1st Sgt making charges? Probably not in your unit considering the way you are talking, but does that mean that all 1st Sgts are the same? I'd say most likely you are in a command unit that would never leave the green zone unless for a PR tour, heading off to Dubai for a vacation, or going home. Use some of that college knowledge for once and don't make stupid comments about things you don't know. Oh..wait... you're an officer so you MUST know EVERYTHING ABOUT EVERYTHING because all officers know 100X more than a Sgt who has been in the army for 4 years while you were in college. It's a wonder the Army can keep anyone with officers like you in command.

For some, the call to a warriors life can be quite unsettling to an ordinary individual. The desire for normalcy that revolves around family, friends, and children are the antithesis to what would be considered normal for the warrior. This does not mean that they are borderline sociopaths as the Newsweek article suggests. They have found their vocation, their purpose, their reason for life. They march to the beat of their own drum, and we should be grateful for their sacrifice. That they do not conform to the norms of modern society means nothing at all. In their case it would be wise to remember that not all who wander, are lost.

You are a narrow minded fool: Like your GPS? Like your Velcro? Like that plastic surgery you got last year? Like the plasma that saved your miserable life when you had that accident? All products designed by and invented by the military and then given wide use in the civilian world.

      • Posted By: concerned liberal @ 06/08/2009 3:51:20 PM

If it is designed by the U.S. military, first it cost 5 times as much as it should have cost and secondly it was paid for by the American taxpayer!

        • Posted By: malcolmspeakeasy @ 06/20/2009 6:07:27 AM

When in combat, equipment failure is not an option. There are also operational philosophies that condition the inherent costs for maintenance. Fighter aircraft of the US operate like race cars, running at 99.99% of potential performance. Pricey as hell but it gives one hell of an edge over the opposition. Your average schmuckmobile achieves only 70% of potential performance (I'm being generous). I do race stuff and I design and fabricate hardware. Sometimes it would have been easier to just pull out twenty dollar bills and set them on fire.

        • Posted By: valkry18 @ 06/08/2009 6:21:29 PM

The reason the equipment costs 5x what it does in the civilian world is that the military is covering the Research & Development that your civilian business won't cover because it is 'too expensive' a start up to make a profit from. The military is covering it because they believe that the lives of the men & women who serve are worth a bit of extra expense if they can bring more military home alive. Sorry the lives of a few thousand of your neighbors seem like wasteful spending to you.

Oh and don't forget while you are so smug about how the private sector sector could produce stuff cheaper... the GPS, the Hummer & all the thousands of other things industries adopted for civilian use are the 'cheap knock-off versions.' Your GPS, your Hummer are probably not going to have to function after someone tries to blow you up, in the military there needs to be very good chance that they can still function.

Please if you are going to be 'concerned' get some facts before you start parroting off lines that have been around since the 80s & were just as factually incorrect then.

        • Posted By: SrAN @ 06/08/2009 3:57:44 PM

And you are lucky all you do is pay taxes. We VOLUNTEER for this, we decided on our own to join the military at a time of war. So please keep going to your nice job where you are ensured to go home in one piece where your wife/husband and kids are waiting for you with a warm meal and a soft bed. I hope this country never has to rely on people like you to defend it if it came down to that.

    • Posted By: malcolmspeakeasy @ 06/07/2009 8:14:11 PM

There is one hugely nice advantage to that "home". When the enemy reveals himself, you get to hunt him down and kill him. Unlike here where you have to restrain yourself.

    • Posted By: comrade87 @ 06/07/2009 12:27:12 PM

ahh yes, whats your definition of a real job? Playing desk jokey, filing paperwork for a company that makes some little insignificant difference to anyones life? Do you answer complaints all day inside of a 4x4 box? Does that really seem like an imprtant job? Or maybe you build some insignificant part that is needed for a car, that could be built cheaper in china. So go ahead, go back to your 'important' job, and remember how insgnificant you really are

  • Posted By: AmericanSage @ 06/15/2009 6:09:57 AM

The issue of ANYONE who cannot make the transition back to civilian life is one that should raise red flags for all. A soldier, indeed, an army, is no more than the discipline of its lowliest soldier. The above cited case, of a returned veteran who cannot be bothered to 'meet the deadline' to pick up his child at daycare on time, is a clear cut case of an explosion waiting to occur. This individual has FAILED to learn the most basic tenet of the soldier; RESPONSIBILITY. The statement that he 'loves it in Iraq' because he can 'go where he wants, bust into peoples houses as if he owns them' is both telling and disturbing. This is NOT a soldier, not a professional in any sense of the word. This is a THUG in a uniform awaiting his next chance to be a bully. The army, indeed any person in any position of responsibility who becomes aware of this individual, has a moral duty to restrain him at the first opportunity and to undertake action{s} so as to negate the 'explosion' waiting to happen. If the majority of the Iraqi veterans are of the mindset that this in depth article highlights then civilian incidents in mainland USA, akin to thew soldier who went berserk in the counseling center, are going to become all too commonplace.

I am currently fighting back the tears. For 13 years I have devoted my life to defending this country, and you people have coused me to question why I have given so much. The people in this article are personal friends of mine. The charactarizations in this article are completely out of context, Jason Dodge is absolutly an Alpha type male. He is not a war monger. He has sacrificed years of his life, and more important, years of his childs life to fight his countries wars. Why? So you dont have to, if you think we dont understand the fact that war has changed us then you are mistaken, I will not try to justify the actions of soldiers while in combat, I will simply say that YOU can not judge the way someone reacts while at war when they feel that thier life, or the lives of thiers subordinates are at risk. You have no right. These Soldiers have given so much more than should be asked of any person. They have given parts of themselves that can never be recovered. The impact of combat does not go away, ever. Hold your tounge when you consider critisising these Heroes. Espetially when you get your information from someone who obviously had an adjenda when they wrote this article.

Personally read the dullard posts and pity the writers, but even as dinked up as they are it's not an excuse; it is what you and everyone else before and after you has granted them, freedom. They have no clue what the costs were for theirs, but take away their rights they would be screaming holly hel%, demanding as to were your at! Kind of a catch 22!

  • Posted By: oxfordgt @ 06/11/2009 12:10:29 AM

You people keep talking about the whole entering houses and driving how we want but you have never been there. Hell yeah I have kicked peoples doors off the hinges and ransacked their house looking for weapons. Hell yeah I have rammed cars off the road or put a few rounds in their engine when they won't pull out of our way. That is our job, we find the bad guys and either capture or kill them all while protecting ourselves. WE ARE NOT POLICE, WE ARE SOLDIERS. We do what is necessary to accomplish the mission. And the mission is capture or kill the bad guys and make Iraq safe enough to leave it.

  • Posted By: oxfordgt @ 06/10/2009 8:04:31 PM

I would give my life to protect some Iraqis before I would for some of you. At least they have honor and support their country.

  • Posted By: jamiefoxer @ 06/10/2009 7:51:55 PM

"But even the driving is better in Iraq. There, you "do whatever you want on the road. You own the road ??? You can go into people's houses without being invited in. It's like you own their house."

When this is part of your mentality, you know there is a PROBLEM. I think Sgt. McBride is a SICK man and I'm ashamed to see the American military forces allowing him to remain in uniform. If there ever was a case for relieving someone of duty, I'd say this one is it. Taking pleasure in abusing one's military position to enter the homes of people we're supposed to be "liberating" is not a healthy mindset for a soldier. How about some action from his superiors, please!

  • Posted By: Peng Win @ 06/10/2009 7:49:00 PM

You can enter people's houses like you own them? You own the road? Likes to shoot his gun? Likes combat? Emotionally closed? These soldiers are psychopaths. They belong in a prison, not on the battle field. How many civilians have they murdered to fuel their needs for an adrenaline rush? These soldiers are in Iraq and Afghanistan terrorizing the citizens, like it and brag about it. Just wait until you get shot in the gut and have to poop into a bag the rest of your life, or get shot in the head and spend your life retarded, soldier boys. You soldiers are sick.

  • Posted By: cadmunlorien @ 06/08/2009 10:56:35 PM

Thanks ox. You say a lot of truth. I don't agree with the reasons some people go into the military (or are forced) and whether or not they like to be there is their personal reasons, but once a man becomes a soldier he becomes part of something bigger than just themselves (regardless of what ideals people want to put on them, such as war for oil, etc.). Regardless of who they are individually they deserve respect for what they are a part of. The military in its form in America is one of the reasons we can do and say what we want within the law (and have the rights to oppose and try to change laws we may question). Without it and without the fighting/peacekeeping/warmonging/protecting (whatever you call it) abroad, we wouldn't exist in the country we have today. Peace is ideal, but the world and those that rule parts of it are not, and we have to stand in the way often rather than just back-up and talk. Both must be employed. People that enjoy being in the middle of it, we need in the middle of it to become the best they can be and have that motivation to strive to become that ideal, same as any profession, ideology, science, etc. More power to them.

  • Posted By: expatincebu @ 06/07/2009 6:57:17 PM

Gee, Richard, some uneducated half witted males in America (like you!) do not know the difference between a baby and a fetus, and seemingly do not have the mind power to comprehend viability. Therefore they think that gives them justification to enslave women.

As for the article, idiots like the soldier in question are why I definitely DO NOT Support the Troops. They all volunteered to kill and destroy innocent women and children for corporate profit, so good riddance when they get killed themselves.

I'm sure you stayed in a building and never set foot in a jungle magicdragon so your opinion means nothing. I don't get a rush from killing I get a rush from nearly getting killed. The same reason I drag race while at home and others skydive or rock climb. That doesn't make me stupid nor do I get in trouble while at home. I'm sure you spent more time in jail from getting cought in rest stop bathrooms then I ever did for driving on a suspended license.

I was in Viet Nam so 'oxfordgt' doesn't have to tell me about war!
People who like war are generally of low intelligence, consciousness, and if they didn't get the 'rush' killing others in a foreign country they'd end up in trouble at home in their own.
But, in a strange way this is good, as we get them out of the 'gene pool' quicker than most!

  • Posted By: oxfordgt @ 06/08/2009 7:25:29 PM

You people crack me up. A bunch of internet thugs that know nothing about the war except what the news channels tell you. To clarify a few things in this story we drive like we own the road because we have too. You never know when another car will drive right at you and explode. As for entering peoples houses like we own them it's because we are looking for terrorists and have good intel that they are in that house. We don't just walk into any house or kick their door in. If we hit a house from bad intel we pay the family for their troubles and any damage caused during the raid.

As for expatincebu I doubt you would have have the balls to call me or any other Soldier an idiot to their face. But you can say what you want to on here and try to sound like a tough guy but at least thank us for making sure you always have the right to do so.

And I have never killed a woman or a child that did not try to kill me or another American first. No Soldier signed up to kill and destroy they signed up to serve their country and protect it like true Americans should.
