This is great... although, sadly, Stephen didn't have time to change the Newsweek logo's typeface - Rockwell Extra Bold is notorious for its liberal bias.

Ahh Steven Colbert, never out of character.

    Stephen,

While we may have won the war we have not yet won the hearts of the Iraqi people. I too was recently in Iraq on a humanitarian mission with Child Aid International (www.childaidinternational.com). I can tell you that if we leave now without taking care of the women that we have widowed and the children that we have orphaned then we could face a serious back lash. I think everyone should take responsibility and sponsor these children. Currently there is over 5 million orphans in Iraq and opportunity and living conditions are pitiful at best.

We should make a positive difference in Iraq and do our part. visit www.childaidinternational.com

"I've brought my hit TV broadcast over there to support our troops."
And how exactly does that work? Entertaining the troops is one thing; broadcasting these shows is another. Your efforts to bring attention (and money) to troop-supporting charities is commendable. But this should not be confused with what appears to be complicity in perpetuating a Pentagon-controlled image of an "Iraq" scrubbed of all the ugly realities of the death and destruction brought to that country by your audience at "Camp Victory".

    Stephen,

In citing our many and triumphant victories in Iraq, you forgot mention how we conquered the Al Queda connected terrorists. This shouldn't be overlooked, as later on those terrorists in Commander Bush's 20/20 hindsight, quickly became one of the main reasons for initially invading Iraq, once no WMD's were found.

Actually, we did find WMDs in Iraq. Over 500 chemical weapons. They were not, however, the ones we went to war over.

But to say that there were no WMDs in Iraq is false.

For all you who're either slamming or praising Colbert for going after the Bush admin, go back and reread the line "And by August of next year we'll withdraw every single one of our troops, leaving behind only memories and 50,000 troops." If that isn't a jab at Obama, I don't know what is.

Like all great satirists, Colbert and his team aim their pen at targets both to the right *and* the left. It's what sets them apart from (and above) the Fox News and Air America (are they still around?) rabble rousers.

But, of course, I know that deep inside, Colbert agrees with ME and thinks that those on the other side are the worst thing to ever happen to this great country.

it's funny, but then the truths behind the laughs aren't so funny. There were no WMDs, our troops are exhausted, and we're going to be stuck in Iraq for a long time to come. Thanks Bush! I always wanted my taxes to go into an illegal war!

Oh my God, this is absolutely the most unbelievable thing to happen to Newsweek since the Eliot Spitzer issue.

    • Posted By: sregis @ 06/08/2009 9:45:23 AM

...but it seems you can't turn away? newsweek must be doing something right.

Be sure to include interviews with the millions of refugees and the 65% of the doctors who have left Iraq. that's what our $700billion bought.

    • Posted By: Fortunate Fox @ 06/07/2009 4:21:03 PM

Do you have a credible, non-biased link for those figures?

      • Posted By: expatMATT @ 06/08/2009 5:14:16 AM

check the websites for the UNHCR and IOM - those will at least confirm the 'millions of refugees' figures. There's also tens if not hundreds of articles on that topic. there are almost 1 million refugees in Jordan and more than a million in Syria - severely straining those countries' resources and capacities to provide basic services - e.g. education, health care, etc. Moreover, for the first few years of the war (i think up until 2007) - the U.S. resettled less than 1,000 people to the U.S. (a country of over 300 million) compared with Sweden (a country of just over 9 million) who accepted somewhere between 10,000 and 20,000 Iraqi refugees...

anyways - there's plenty of official sites out there that confirm these things. get informed! (everyone)

        cheers

    Dear Glorious Leader,

As part of the Colbert Nation I Know your presents at Newsweek had honored Jon Meacham. I humbly await my copy to once again bask in your greatness.

  • Posted By: Galasso @ 06/07/2009 9:40:56 PM

Jon Meacham is a decent guy. He just has to suffer fools like Fineman and Zakaria. Colbert is not a Charlestonian. He was born in the district of Columbia and is still regarded by most of us - North and South of Broad Street - as a sniveling, cunning carpetbagger of the first magnitude.

  • Posted By: wildechild66 @ 06/07/2009 7:49:59 PM

It is Stephen Colbert. You're not supposed to take it seriously, so stop whining.

  • Posted By: funkdome @ 06/07/2009 7:09:55 PM

Yay! A partisan liberal editing Newsweek. Of course, we have a partisan liberal editing Newsweek every week, but at least now that partisan liberal is forthright about his biases.
