Public schools are ranked according to a ratio devised by Jay Mathews: the number of Advanced Placement, Intl. Baccalaureate and/or Cambridge tests taken by all students at a school in 2008 divided by the number of graduating seniors. All of the schools on the list have an index of at least 1.000; they are in the top 6 percent of public schools measured this way. (Article continued below...)

If you have questions about the list, please contact challenge@washpost.com. Note: Subs. Lunch % is the percentage of students receiving federally subsidized meals. E and E % stands for equity and excellence percentage: the portion of all graduating seniors at a school that had at least one passing grade on one AP or IB test. For more information on methodology, see our FAQ; please leave your comments on the list in the comments box below.

**Includes IB. Nearly all other schools use just AP tests.

TJ is listed in the The Public Elite list, 14 schools that are too superior to even be in this list. Look at the box on the right "The Top of the Class" - click on "The Public Elite."

Obviously this is an imcomplete list at best. The absence of Thomas Jefferson High School in Virginia is enough to show this to be true.

America's Best Guidance Counselor

For the 2010 edition of the NEWSWEEK-Kaplan College Guide, we have asked legendary high school guidance counselor Gwyeth Smith Jr. (the subject of the new book "Acceptance") to answer your questions about finding the right college. For nearly 40 years, Smitty, as he is known, has been helping students (and their parents) survive and even enjoy the search for the ideal school. His unconventional approach—he often goads top students to look beyond big name campuses, and encourages "long shots" to aim high—has set hundreds of students on the path to success. Click above to submit your question. Smith will answer selected questions in the 2010 NEWSWEEK Kaplan-College Guide, to be published in August.
