If you're a talented writer who refuses to be a lemming and write the same thing as everyone else you can't even get an agent today. As long as publishers only care about making money, as opposed to publishing quality writing, it will not matter how great a novel is, or how talented a writer is -- all that will matter is how many $ a book can make. We'll have wave after wave of yet more Harry Potters and vampire stories, and we have more than enough of those as it is. If the publishers of the 20s-60s had been as shallow and money-grubbing as today's, we would never have heard of Hemingway, Fitzgerald, Salinger, Welty...People don't "publish" anymore; they sell. And we have a hard time finding true writers and literature because of it.
