I read this article with much intrest as my specality is geriatric offenders. I can safely say to anyone who reads this that not all geriatric people are kind grandparent types. Currently geriatric offenders serving time may or may not need prison. In some cases such as a geriatric offender with Alzheimers I say release them to a nursing home where the cost to care for this person is decreased and as an added bonus Alzheimer units are monitored with a locking door system so they will still be locked up. Some offenders need to be kept in prison just because of their safety risk to society. To some geriatric offenders it does not matter how old they are they will continue to be the way they are and to do what got them to prison in the first place. Some people know right from wrong and continue to make poor choices becoming even more of a burden on society.
I do know of a couple of geriatric offenders who wanted to go back to prison because they could get the health care they needed. There are 3 classes of citizens in America that are federally mandated to receive health care
1. US Active Servicemembers
2. Prison/Jail offenders
3. Congress Members
In prison we must provide necessary medical care at a cost to the state taxpayers where the offender is incarcerated. There is no insurance for prison offenders except what the state mandates for prison health expenses, this money comes from state taxpayers in that specfic state. Medicare/Medicaid cease when the offender becomes incarcerated if they have ever received it. Even Medicare and Medicaid does not reimburse for some Medical/Dental issues such as dentures (except in some cases) and good luck finding a health care provider. When you become incarcerated you can get dentures, you can get cardiology doctors, you can even receive a transplant (must meet criteria) all at taxpayer expense to name a few. Wow... it is better than my current health care plan. I also want to say some people think the health care is poor in prisons, I have witnessed many state run prisons that provide equal if not better care than their community counterparts. Its the few horror stories that people remember...we should keep in mind the many health care providers working in the prison system doing their job well and going unnoticed.
