I know one thing. If business bean counters are designing healthcare, then not much will be covered. Therefore, the government will be picking up the slack:putting good money on bad care. But to have a government healthcare, we could be putting good money on good care. Tax payers are paying no matter what: but without much control on the bad care.

If congress is allowed to stall, the public will get a fake health care system. The time is now. And all the money will not be spent the first year: maybe 5 percent. The third and forth years will be HALF the cost of the second year. ... Plus the public will have better health.

Obama's health care program forces an artificial liow cost and degrades the whole health care system. Europe and Canada are not the models to follow. Our distinctive American health care is the best and we made it that way with innovation and distinctively American solutions.

    Dear Senator or congressperson X

There is this feeling out here in the real world, that the blazing
galaxy of obvious facts now surrounding us will have little effect in
your world of the bought and sold. You did after all, just let the
Wall Street gang hold us for ransom and they walked away with trillions.
Faced with a desperate situation at the lower end of our economic
latter, you poured the balance of our current national wealth and all
the wealth our children will likely create for the foreseeable future
in to the top of Wall Street's great ravenous machine. It is a machine
that apparently has no bottom and knows no shame. Somehow you expected
this heartless mechanism to mediate our problems for the greater good.
Were you really surprised when absolutely nothing came out at the
bottom of this ruthless device to benefit those in real need?

Please don???t make the same mistake with our health care system. In
this domain you've already let these same folks literally kill a fair
number of us in their ruthless pursuit of profit, but my friend, we
are coming to the end of the line. We've surrendered all we have to
give and there is no more room to wiggle. If for no other reason than
the fact that we are, as a nation, somewhere south of being broke, it
is time to choose what history has shown to be the cheapest, the most
equitable and most efficient way out. We can no longer afford the
luxury of sustaining our 19th century fundamentalist ideological purity.

Healthcare reform is THE test that will reveal the true nature of our
government and the future course of our very civilization. It has
taken on a symbolic importance that goes beyond the lethal numbers and
their serious life and death ramifications. IF we can't make this so-
called democracy work FOR us THIS time around, the essential, enduring
bonds between this people and this government will have been broken.
What little faith still remains in the virtue of your good offices and
what little hope lingers for a new day in America will have foundered
on the twin shoals of greed and cowardice.

    Sincerely,
    --

It is so convenient that factcheck.org can cherry pick facts with the best of spinsters. Nor do they feel the compulsion to attribute their facts or numbers to any specific report. What makes the Kaiser Family Foundation so authoritative? Kaiser Permanente is a huge health industry player. Who fact checks factcheck.org? It is becoming obvious that this group is anything but objective.

I suppose some common sense and cool head can solve this cost problem.
As we know, the public option currently being discussed is modeled after Massachusetts Plan, under which about 97% of all Massachusetts residents are now covered.
According to the approach of CBO, its rate of the uninsured in Massachusetts should be far greater than the present one at the moment.
Moreover, in case the strong public option, medical IT, increased efforts in prevention, and a broader array of cost-saving plans and beyond add to the Massachusetts Plan, the cost containment does not matter at all. And most importantly, the promising stem cell research is making its way.
To date, private insurers have coexisted profitably with Medicare and Medicaid for many years.
Basically, healthy society leads to better productivity and better performance.

If you want to get a real handle on the laughable nature of Obama's "plan" listen to White House chief economic advisor Christina Romer's sing song presentation before the Commonwealth club of San Francisco. By her own description their figures are "back of the envelope calculations" projecting "freed up resources" that will magically go to finance expansion of coverage instead of padding corporate profits, reduce the deficit, fight unnecessary wars over oil and finance the usual executive bonuses on Wall Street.

Why is it that we have over 40 million people without health care that the insurance companies won't cover, yet they don't want the government to cover them either?

  • Posted By: Retiree60 @ 06/18/2009 8:05:13 PM

Does anyone out there know what health plan Congress has? I understand that it is a private insurer, not the government and that it's a pretty good plan. I'd like to know the premiums we pay for it. then I'd like to know if the members of Congress would opt for a nationalized plan that gave service similar to the VA. THe VA is the only government run system we have for comparison in this country so I assume the nationalized system would be similar. Anybody have any information on that?

    • Posted By: 4ndybot @ 06/18/2009 10:37:27 PM

Such a program does exist, it's called "Medicare". And VA is only underfunded because it represents and services only a tiny fraction of the US population and most people are too self interested to care about veteran affairs.

Medicare is projected to go broke by 2019.

I wonder what the obesity rate is in Japan, Switzerland, etc. While there is a genetic disposition toward diabetes type II and hypertension, many people in this country could avoid or delay these diseases by watching their weight and exercising more. How much does our "fatness" contribute to heart attacks, hip and knee replacements, kidney dialysis and strokes. After a friend of mine lost weight, she was able to discontinue her high blood pressure medication. As soon as she gained the weight back, her hypertension returned. In addition, she had high cholesterol, a bad back and acid reflux. She never tried to lose weight again and everyday she takes handfuls of tablets. I love her dearly, but she would rather suffer with these issues than diet and exercise. I once knew a diabetic man that had one toe had a time amputated. He eventually went blind. He had a multitude of problems, but he weighed 400 pounds and smoked three packs of cigarettes a day.

It is pretty bad when the life expectancy in this country is lower than Guam and Jordan. While our healthcare needs fixing, is it our lifestyle that is contributing to our early demise? Maybe this country should practice more preventive medicine.

Let's talk about personal responsibility. Maybe if we as a nation stopped guzzling soda and eating fast food, we would not have half the health problems or the cost. Stop relying on the government to come up with an easy fix. When has the government done anything efficient or cost-effective. We need to help those who are uninsured, but we must not ignore our own personal responsibilities when it comes to the health care debate.

Has anyone determined how much tax revenue would be generated by companies that no longer have to shoulder the burden of employee healthcare expenses? These companies would reduce thier out of pocket healthcare expense and increase thier taxable income. Even at current tax rated this could generate moe revenue and lower the cost of a public healthcare option.

Fact checking Bama is a waste of time. This criminal si going to do whatever he wants no matter what the cost to America and the SHEEP are going to follow to the slaughter house.

Lets see.... "Massiah", "Bama" "criminal" "cost to America", "sheep", "slaughter house". You missed a few of the Republican talking points, but you did pretty good overall. Typical high powered Republican debate tactics have been real effective of late, huh? Do you have a real contribution to the healthcare problem?

You are absolutely correct. We should never question our leaders. Oh wait, isn't that the big argument that the press didn't do its job before the Iraq war in questioning. Now we are not suppose to question or citicize the president's healthcare proposal. Please, you all knowing liberals, please explain to me why we should not question/criicize and hold accountable our leaders.

Hmm, coming to the rescue of the Obama administration!
"We found several claims in Obama's recent health-care sales pitches that could use some explanation or qualification."
So when are you going to ask the questions that you should be asking?
How far is too far? When do we realize that our freedoms are being not so slowly taken away from us with only a false sense of personal security to placate us. When do we realize that our country is no longer the land of the free.

But to be fair, I do believe in Obama... and the tooth fairy... and the easter bunny...

A campaign promise to create national health care was made by the presidential candidate in .......1948. Big Pharma, the CEO self presevation society and all the corporations wallowing in corporate welfare have spent billions, year after year to block it. You the haelth care consumer have been paying for the efforts. Why not pay for better health care and not corporate welfare.

    Newsweek, and facts. Since when?

  • Posted By: 4ndybot @ 06/18/2009 10:22:56 PM

To open up an issue of Newsweek is to understand where they are coming from. 70% (50% in Luxembourg) of the magazine is devoted to drug ads for octogenarians. I don't believe they are allowed a neutral editorial stance on this issue.

  • Posted By: MyBrothersKeeper @ 06/18/2009 10:18:52 PM

I am a certified employee benefit specialist and I say, "get off his back'. He is 100% correct in his assesment of the situation if only 95% statistically accurate. You do the country a great dis-service by continually biting at the President's heals. He is the only hope we have to get on the right road. Has anyone got a better idea or we just snipping away hoping the future will allow some credit to fall our way?

  • Posted By: LMarcT @ 06/18/2009 9:25:05 PM

Give me a break. The claim that Obama was wrong about us paying 50% more for healthcare is because Newsweek counted Luxembourg? Their so small, I would remove them from the comparison... Do that and his claim is right.

They dispute his claim that it costs us $1000 more in insurance to cover the uninsured. So he needed to say that it costs us $1000 in added insurance and taxes and raised prices in hospitals. Okay, a slight misstatement, but the point is true. It costs us a $1000.

To call this a "fact check" and then to only list the 2 or 3 things they dispute is ridiculous. It implies he mis-lead us. HE DID NOT. They needed to list ALL the facts he presented... even all the true ones to give the correct overall perspective.

And I don't know about you, but my insurance costs have been increasing at a very "healthy" clip of at least 10% a year... and no end in sight. Throw that into the 10 year equation and tell me the break even number to fix this... I'm sure its enough.

There are many more reasons than healthcare for longevity. To assume that it equates to the provision of HC is fallacious and is BS. Why can't these people tell the truth?
