Does this article really come as a surprise to anyone? Unfortunately, American political philosophy is rooted in touting Christian beliefs. That is why everytime we try to take a progressive step forward we have take two steps back. Read Benjamin Rush's stance on utilizing Christian morals and ethics in education to create a prejudice toward American Nationalism and control docile republic. James Madison said that "liberty is to faction, what air is to fire." However, a government rooted in fundamentalism is a fire that will burn liberty to the ground. These people are supposed to be able to float above the fray of factionalism and serve the best interest of people as a whole.

The question I see that arises is why are we even at war? Convictions. Whether or not you think your convictions are based upon the Bible or your upbringing, humanity as a whole has a moral sense of what is right or wrong. Everyone must judge the actions of others as right or wrong. Sure we can avoid having to pass judgment as long as we aren't directly affected by another's actions, but as soon as we are "touched" we must judge. Our consciences are a directly reflection of a God given moral compass. We say that trying to evangelize a nation, whether that be Afghanistan of America, is wrong, but we stand in a war that was a reaction and judgment of another???s actions. We cannot stand on the sidelines of injustices because of that moral compass we try so hard to quite and drowned out. Our presence in the Middle East alone stands as a testimony to our beliefs. If we shouldn't try to propagate our morals of right and wrong, then I propose that we should also stop sending money to the orphanages and HIV victims of Africa. After all, that is pushing our morals upon a culture that most likely rejects American "religions". There is only one absolute truth. If truth is not true for all, then it is not truth at all.

This notion that we are not a Judaic/Christian nation is another example of those who wish to rewrite history to fit their own personal issues. Many have a deep distaste for religion as it calls into question their own personal choices in life. Moral relativity, environmentalism, and equality (at all costs), have been re-introduced as the new relegion. I think we will suffer a great deal over the next decade as this belief takes a stonger hold in society. If some (bible thumper) as many today call them, hands you a bible, and says "can I tell you about this book". You have the freedom to tell him "no", close your door, and toss the bible in the trash. Why do you fear them? Why pick Christianity and the jews as a the whipping boy, and then get offended when a Koran gets tossed in the toilet ? We put foot baths and prayer rooms in colleges for islam, and the aclu litigates to remove crosses from public places. Those who preach equality have a funny way of showing it. This schizophrenic way of thinking is just pointless. Next time you visit the liberty bell ask yourself why there is a verse from the Torah on it. I'm Jewish, but I embrace the fact that this is a religious nation.

The problem does not lie in the faith of the soldiers. They can, and are allowed to believe whatever they want to to get them through to the next day.

The problem lies in America's inability to separate religious crusades from military invasions. First and foremost, no one knows for absolute certain whether God or any other gods exist. Believers hope, pray, and have faith that there is a God out there to save them. That is why religion is often interchanged with "faith". Nothing in religion is founded on certainties. There is nothing wrong with having faith, but there is something wrong with pushing unfounded faiths on people of other countries who already have a faith of their own.

When so many different parties beleive so strongly in their religions, and believe with such strength and stubbornness that their god exists and the other ones are wrong, who is to say what god, if any truly does exist? How can it be wrong that Christians put so much faith in God, yet thousands of years ago, Greeks put their every fiber of their being in the gods and goddesses? Both were absolutely sure that their gods and God existed. Who's to say they do or don't?

Chaplains evangelizing the word of their God through the military, and trying to get people of other religions to believe what they believe confines the beauty of this world. Our planet is amazing in the fact that so many bodies of people are able to hold different beliefs...and do so without persecution.

....and WHY do we have chaplins in the military?

  • Posted By: ehooch @ 06/24/2009 2:05:14 PM

stormy miller - You make christianity sound a LOT better than Islam. Was that your purpose? "Bin Laden" and "Robertson".... Hmm.... Mass killer versus an eccentric....

The same points being made here are less dramatic and violent than what most islamists preach on a daily basis and a very global scale. I am in the US military and have yet to see anything remotely close to this report being made into a reality, let alone the "soul" focus of any military exercise or operation anywhere. If anything, we are told to basically keep our mouths shut when it comes to religious discussion on duty among ourselves and in foreign lands. Such discussions can get heated and lead to trouble to say the least.

We see islamists nations persecuting or executing it's none islamist citizens all the time. Did you know that having Holy Bible or Torah (or anything other than the koran) in some islamist countries will cost you a lot more than just having it confiscated? It may cost you your freedom or even your mortal life.

I am not in favor of any religion because they all share common traits, that of the tainted/twisted mind of man and a control factor that sometimes borders on the paranoid and sick.

Here we go again with the No Atheists in Foxholes BS....I am/was one! Who do you think you are making such a comment? Go to www.maaf.info and you will see how many of us there are! When death surrounds an Atheist we don't turn to the "invisible man"., we think rationally about what to do next for ourselves and fellow soldier next to us. If a mortar is coming at you you don't have time to pray! Duh! I never say "god help me!" because there is no god!

I served in the Army from 95 - 05 in the states to eastern and western europe to the middle east. I serve the Army still as a civilian contractor in Iraq. The comment made by "hartman_john is clearly biased, deranged and absolutely absurd. You can thank the best of America's youth for standing up and protecting your freedom to badmouth there sacrifice.

The name says it all. This religioNazi wacko thinks the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan are about protecting our freedom when clearly it is about a political agenda. Part of the agenda was to bring "export democratic government" to the Middle East. The oher part was to Christinize as many Muslim people as possible. These have NOTHING to do with protecting our rights. They have everything to do with nation-building and arrogance. It is shameful that anyone would attempt to defend these wars as anything else.

  • Posted By: ehooch @ 06/24/2009 2:02:02 PM

NasTN8 - why should there be? i thought this was a democratic country. The ONLY mention of religion in the constitution is the prohibition of CONGRESS from RESTRICTING religious practice or creating a national religion.

Ammerman and Hartman are true nut cases and so are the other Chaplins, and thats why people are not as religous as they use to be or follow no particular religion because of people like this. Trying to push the bible on people from another country and telling the soldiers to hunt (kill) for jesus. Really, now Jesus wants you to kill for him ! How very Christian of him. There no better than those nut case fanatical Muslim who twist the Koran into their own view of it (Bin laden for example). Just be respectful to others and their religion if they are religous and don't push it on them. If they come to you looking for guidence then listen to them and tell them what you think and tell them when ever you want to talk I'll be here. Thats what a chaplin should do.

thank you, born atheist. religion is not the only 'foundation' on earth. all you religies sound just as brainwashed as the next. jesus, most of your statements sound so robotic. i feel sorry for your weak minds.

religion is an evil force in this world and should be illegal!

  • Posted By: Oneman @ 06/24/2009 1:57:58 PM

I find it somewhat amazing that you find it offensive that members of our country are spreading the gospel to the people in Iraq and yet you are willing to have tax payer dollars fund the teaching of Darwinism in their public school system hum. You know you should take a closer look at your beliefs and do an assessment. Furthermore if you read the Constitution of the United States you will find that it says, under the first amendment Freedom ???of??? Religion not Freedom ???from??? Religion, it is quite an excellent document you really should read it some time. Did you know that those men that founded America are Christian, and that freedom of the press and speech were paid for with the blood of Christians. If you study American history you???ll find I???m right. In closing I would just like to say enjoy your freedoms paid for by others because Freedom isn???t Free.

I'd like to see the lot of you urban dwelling liberals on the front line to protect our country when in need. After your initial horror of having to carry an M4 or SAW , your limp wristed advance against an enemy would be interesting. A lot of good Christian soldiers are out there now protecting your rights. You make me f**king sick

  • Posted By: NasTN8 @ 06/24/2009 1:56:46 PM

well, there should be a separation of church and state, even if there isn't one

  • Posted By: CZARKY @ 06/24/2009 1:55:53 PM

Its o.k. that we screwed up from time to time trying to spread the word...blah..blah..blah.Tell it to the Jews, victims of the Inquisition, anyone arrested under moral grounds, family members who lost their loved ones to cults"Jim Jones",the Ani-baptist,but don't tell me If you believe in Christ fine I don't care but like an anathema most "not all" modern Christianity has forsaken or left behind what Jesus was all about and returned to more misleading and legalistic hybrids that claim\ peace, truth, and kindness but deliver fictions and in Church spiritualism..Watch "with God on our Side" then tell me that evangelical leaders and others have not or do not force their beliefs on people. When you decide to legislate morality to the point they would like it legislated then we all have a problem.
law men "enforce "the law. Evangelical leaders openly want a Theocracy and may become too impatient on waiting for Gods return,If they got what they wanted we would be where Tehran and Iran are today but with an even more insidious regime to fight..Oh yeah if I havn't said it already you can't force a corpse to believe anything, because you would be better off dead in their eyes ,because debate isn't an option for the more extreme elements of "crusade mentality."

  • Posted By: BornAtheist @ 06/24/2009 1:53:21 PM

saddened american, I don't need a religious foundation nor am I lost! Who do you think you are? Extreme measures due to religion are the only things used to manipulate your mind. Why can't you think for yourself and take credit for it? Why must you use religion as a crutch?

  • Posted By: palbigler@yahoo.com @ 06/24/2009 1:28:55 PM

    hmmmmm.....
Seems to me that sending a Bible anywhere still requires that the person who receives it still has a few chioces, open it , read it, believe it. Last time I checked becomming a follower of Christ is , to each and everone who truely knows Him, an active and individual decision. I can't make anyone believe, and I can't do it for them, but I am called to lovingly share the gifts I have recieved: Redemption, comfort in times of hardship, peace, joy, wisdom, hope, faith, LOVE. I surely hope that is something I can pass on to others. I am greatly overjoyed that we don't withhold medicle care to burn victim's, food and water from starving children, and the peace and comfort of knowing a God who loves loves loves no matter what. But no matter what we put out in an outstretched hand to another person, they have to recieve it, and they always have the right to say no. What is it that this artiicle really tells me? Not that the issue of anger is the words being spoken, or the passing out of the Bibles. The real thing that go "somebody" stirred up, is the fact that people are accepting the word, and they are reading and beliving those Bibles. Which, is also just as a protected freedom as this article being written.

    • Posted By: Onycho @ 06/24/2009 1:48:15 PM

palbigler, you do not understand. The point is this, if someone, outside the US military wishes to go and preach the word of the christian form of God in Iraq and Afghanistan, they are free to do so. It is NOT now, never has been, and should NEVER be the job of the US military or anyone in the military. To do so, especially in muslim countries does nothing but endanger the life of military personel and endanger their mission there.

      • Posted By: ehooch @ 06/24/2009 1:53:17 PM

"the job"? Who says its "the job" of the military? It is a RIGHT.

  • Posted By: sarzee1 @ 06/24/2009 1:52:31 PM

WHAT A JOKE!!!! Another failed scared tactic being pushed by a liberal media agenda.
