For Chivian, biodiversity is both the measure of disruption in an ecosystem—the symptom of illness—and the final cost. It makes sense that a less diverse planet would be more sick: biodiversity is also the diversity of defenses, of cures. More simply, biodiversity is not a thing apart from humans. There is no us and them—no useful distinction, when it comes to health, between the human world and the nonhuman. "We share the same pool of infectious diseases as all species," says physician Aaron Bernstein, Chivian's colleague. The absolute worst thing is to end up alone in the pool.

    The Swine flu panic was over-covered by the media, however the issues that this article brings up will have to be dealt with some day. You're being ignorant if you are taking the redneck/ultra right wing stance on this. This is something we cannot turn a blind eye to.

    Control human population to 0.5 to 1.0 billion and keep 1/3 of land off limits to human exploitation. Simple.

    here in south western id. we have wild cats becoming a part of the ecosystem. there are not many mice or birds! so if you want some, come and get them! bring a cage, a can of catfood, and gauranteed within an hour you will have 10!
