2008 oil consumption: 85 million barrels of oil per day
42 gallons equals one oil barrel
55 gallon steel drum: 22??? wide by 3??? tall
A mile is 5,280 feet long
Circumference of the earth is 24,901 miles
    Speed of sound 768 mph

Take the 85,000,000 bbl of oil & times it by 42 gal in a barrel to equal 3,570,000,000 total gallons of oil used everyday.

Divide these total gallons by steel drums
3,570,000,000gal / 55 gal steel drum = 64,909,090 drums of oil consumed each day.

at 3 feet tall it takes 1,760 drums laid end-to-end to build a pipeline one mile long: 5280???/3??? = 1,760 drums

Daily consumption of oil in drums divided by the number of drums in a mile:
64,909,090 drums/1,760 drums in a mile = a 36,880 mile long pipeline worth of drums laid end to end being consumed every day

Circumference of the earth is 24,901 miles

At 85,000,000 barrels per day, in one year???s worth of consumption enough oil drums could be filled to make the trip around the world 540 times: (36,880 miles * 365days)/24,901 = 540

36,880 miles / 24 hours in a day = 1,537 miles every drum would need to travel each hour to cover the 36,880 mile distance in a 24 hour period.

1,537 miles / 768 mph speed of sound = 2 or twice the speed of sound.

To sum: at 85,000,000 barrels worth of daily consumption you could build an oil pipeline using steel drums 36,880 miles long (or approximately 1.5 times the circumference of the earth), and since you???d be replacing this pipeline???s volume every day the crude oil flowing through it would be traveling at twice the speed of sound! And in one year's worth of production you would use enough drums to encircle the earth 540 times.

Now, who in their right mind believes just half that amount will be replaced using bio fuels?

The US uses 20 million barrels per day but only 5.1 million is produced domestically. The US roadway fleet uses 10 million of that 20 million. IOW, all other things remain the same, Obama and D.C. could outlaw all roadway transportation - motorcycles, cars, trucks, and SUVs - and close every gas station they'd eliminate 10 million out of the 20 million barrels of daily consumption. BUT at only 5.1 million barrels being produced domestically the US would still have to import 5 million barrels per day...or half its oil consumption.

An Immediate Fix For The Oil Crisis While We Develop Alternate Fuels.

Save 75 Cents/Gallon At The Pump This Summer & Cut Pollution By 90%

Thirty-seven years ago during the 1973 Oil Crisis- http://video.yahoo.com/watch/53792/1453429 -we developed a fuel enhancer. We call it MPG50. When added to gasoline or diesel fuel, it provides many benefits including a mileage boost of 20% to 30%, a several point octane boost & up to 90% exhaust pollution reduction. It is very cost-effective & widespread use of MPG50 could cut American dependence on foreign oil by 35%. See: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mSQh4zQcThc

Buy a $25 trial bottle of MPG50 & get a $40 Gas Rebate Voucher good at any gas station in North America. You make a $15 profit for trying MPG50. With $3.00/gallon gas prices a bottle of MPG50 saves 75 cents/gallon & since 1 bottle treats 160 gallons, you save $120 in gas or diesel fuel.

An Affiliate Plan lets you make extra $$$ & there is no cost for the business (Buy 1 bottle/month to qualify for commissions). See http://MPG50.com

    God Bless America

Oh Please, anyone can have a doomsday theory, especially if it makes them money by selling their book!

The following facts illustrate why we have to get off of oil even if there is no production peak in the near term and no global warming. It is all economics.
    1) Since 1970 w have rack up $4 trillion (measured in today's dollars) in balance of payments deficit due to imported energy--80% of what we owe the rest of the world in dollars.
    2) At current prices and our current oil imports of about 12 million barrels per day, we are racking up $350 billion more in deficit each year. We would have to export 10 miillion totally U.S. made cars costing $35,000 each to offset this shortfall. At $140 per barrel, it would be $700 billion per year.
    3) If there are 20 billion barrels of reserves in the Alaskan North Slope we would drain it in 4 years if we depended on it for all our oil. If there are 100 billion barrels of oil off shore, we would use it up in 20 years. How many of you have less than 25 years to live? We have been trying to build a nuclear waste repository for 27 years and are no where near licensing one.
Without one, we cannot license new nuclear power plants. We do not attack problems quickly anymore.
    4) Most of the oil exporting countries have huge populaitions under 25 years of age and need increasing oil revenues to keep the lid from blowing off in their countries (think Iran for example). They will raise prices at every opportunity.
    5) The price of oil will go up as the value of the U.S. dollar goes down to maiintain purchasing power for OPEC countries.
Our future as a consumer of 25% of the annual world oil production is in peril.

"We have been trying to build a nuclear waste repository for 27 years and are no where near licensing one.
      "

We have one. We just can't use it due to red tape hokey-pokey.

If the combustion engine and the need for gasoline to run it would have been developed during the civil war, we would be out of oil now here in the US. Think 19th century. Our only hope is holding on to our foothold(thank you Pres Bush) in the Persian Gulf which has enough oil for the US and Iraq for over 100 years. Of course, we will have to fight a nuclear war with China to keep it and we will lose as it will be a sneak attack again with them using their latest nuclear subs each carrying 12 nuclear missiles. This will happen with 3 years. Forget the college funds. ..rx

"Yet, like other believers in the "peak oil" theory, he falls into the trap of underestimating society's capacity to meet future fuel challenges through innovation and conservation. " This is a very weak argument. The author does not come to terms with what we are actually facing by confronting the data we have. Our data is incomplete, but the best data we have suggests that at that very least, we will have a production shortfall in the short to medium term (2010-2015) The number of exporting nations is declining. Mexico will likely become an importer in the next five years. We can't all become importers and have enough to go around.

First, the manipulated oil price bubble is not what "caused" the economic crisis.

Second, shipping represents a small fraction of the value of goods as anyone can plainly see from the minimal value of many shipped goods.

That "economist" Jeff Rubin could be so wrong on these two basic points suggests that his thesis has had no critical review. Is it just silly, chicken little alarmism or is there an agenda behind this endlessly promoted meme? As described in a recent article, Dr. Chu's Energy Bait and Switch, the current energy debate in congress includes a proposed 100 new nuke plants.

"Yet, like other believers in the "peak oil" theory, he falls into the trap of underestimating society's capacity to meet future fuel challenges through innovation and conservation. "

In my view, he doesn't. When you look at two factors:
    * how quickly oil will decline past its peak of production and
    * how quickly producer countries' consumption is growing, leaving less for the world market
it becomes clear that the world economy cannot adjust at that pace without severe dislocations.

I recommend that you read the 2005 Department of Energy Report "PEAKING OF WORLD OIL PRODUCTION: IMPACTS, MITIGATION, & RISK" to get a sense of what's in store for you. You think this rate of decline is something we can "just handle" and it's not even close.

There is a reason why tens of thousands of people around the world have begun preparing for oil decline. It means a discontinuity in the very fabric of our civilization.

As Vaclav Smil, author of Energy at the Crossroads, writes: ???There will be precious little of any rapid change,??? he added, ???as energy systems are inherently inertial and as energy transitions take decades to accomplish. Besides, he [Obama] will preside over a bankrupt nation.???

I urge you to do more research on this. The future is unlikely to be easy. We have lived through the golden age of oil and it the countries of the world fight over its dwindling supply, probably the most peaceful period, too.
