Let's talk about the REAL reason that reality shows are so popular-- they're cheap for the networks to produce. Why spend the time and effort to produce an hour of intelligent, thought-provoking television when it's much easier to film a bunch of pseudo-celebrities arguing inanely? When historians chart the fall of Western civilization, they will identify reality television as one of the contributing factors.

I used to think that reality shows should be banned too. But I now I think, let the stupid people keep watching them and keep getting stupider. If we're lucky, maybe they will try to imitate the show, kill themsleves off, and win a Darwin award!

Maybe reality shows should be banned because they set bad examples. They're violent, sex is a major topic in them even if the show isn't really about that, and if they are not like the aforementioned and completely harmless overall, then they are downright boring. Aside from the fact that they make television overall pathetic. That is, in contrast to shows and movies where we can watch real drama and tragedy and comedy with, you know, clever plots and interesting characters, or just actual news and get some ideas of current events in the world.

Reality shows seem to fill a fabricated gap in between entertainment (or the escapism of fiction) and the desire for objective news and information - it's really more like something in between, being neither real nor informative. Maybe only the people who watch these shows need to be banned, but unfortunately, they appear to be the majority, making some people wonder what kind of bizarre and generally stupid world we're living in.
