It is obvious to the casual observer that the GOP is the party of old, rich, white men. In addition to being virulently anti-minority; they are also anti-women. These mastodons will be completely gone in another election cycle or two. Their emblem is George Will who is so conservative he makes Goldwater look like Che Guevara.

Goodbye GOP; you were the party of Lincoln; until you became the party of Nixon, Reagan, Bush I , Bush II and McCain and Palin and Ensign and Sanford and Vitter and Jindal and Pawlenty and Gingrich and Limbaugh and Bachmann and Inhofe. The list goes on and on; each one a bigger idiot than the last

You forgot Oh Really, Hannity, Glen Beck, Malkin and Coulter. Absence substantive issues, they are beginning to invent them. Their recent comment is that the new energy bill passed by Congress will increase tax on electricity. Rove even mentioned imagined figure of $1,800 per year per family when the worst-case estimate is only $85 in about year 2020 which will be lower than current inflation rates.

Apolitical: By not including all variables, the Congresssional Budge Office grossly underestimated costs of cap-and-trade. The CBO's study is flawed because it doesn't address economic changes resulting from restricted energy use and potential job losses. Why do you automatically reject legitimate objections to this bill?

        • Posted By: Apolitical @ 07/03/2009 5:42:04 PM

Legitimate my a$$. Most of the objections are from GOP puppets whose strings are being pulled by oil, gas and extractive energy interests. Why not the world's, the country's and the people's interest, welfare and health for a change?

Apolitical. What a strange choice of names for a person with such a strong bias. Unfortunately, you have a closed mind because you are in lockstep with the Obama Administration.and Democrat Congress. I would advise you to read multiple sources and educate yourself on this bill. It will be a real eye opener.

It is fortunate that the GOP has spokesment like Will and Limbaugh. There is no doubt about where the gop stands. No shades of gray; no nuance; no hint of intelligence just a strong and unwavering NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO! These guys are circling the drain and I for one will not be sorry to see the party go away. We will then havea two party system; Liberal Democrats and Moderate Democrats
    bwahahahahahhahaha

You keep repeating yourself. It was inane the first time.

Until the kind of racists on display in the Republican party during the last election have ceased to exist (probably never), the Voting Rights Act and its protection against "clever" bigots in power and their attempts to disenfranchise black voters should remain in place. Amazing how Republicans think we've all forgotten their "Obamabucks" and other disgusting examples of the racism that pervades their party that was so recently on display. The fact Obama won is hardly proof that racism no longer exists, despite the popular Republican myth to the contrary.

    • Posted By: bjsassy @ 07/01/2009 2:24:18 PM

Edward. Name specific examples of the general racism that you say permeates the Republican Party. There are racist members in both parties, but neither the Democrat or the Republican Party is racist. It is absurd to to rant about a subject that you know nothing about.

    • Posted By: bighappy @ 06/28/2009 12:55:14 AM

      Who are racisits?
It is well known that Democrats were KKK party when racism served their purposes, trhey still have one KKK member in Senate. They never apologised for racism and hate propagated by their party, just opposite, as soon as afro-americans got voting rights (against Democrats will) - they immediately "switched" to the best friends of minorities and and muman right activists. Exactly the same people who were known as worst racicts and anti-semits (like famous Walles) became anti-segregationists, and what a surprize - were elected by the same former opprest people. It is such a nature of american people - forget who their favorites were before and believe only empty promises.

That is about the most ridiculous piece of revisionist history I've ever had the misfortune to gaze upon. Insulting to anyone with a lick of common sense and the ability to read. That I've read this sentiment, including the exact phrasing, as if they just copy and paste, expressed in many other venues, is illustrative of what appears to be a concerted campaign by the right. They seemingly seek to capitalize on the trend American's intellectual laziness...knowing that empty promises aren't the only thing believed. Is there any one so dense as to actually believe the Democratic Party, written as if it were a single, sentinent entity, switched sides, instead of the reality....the people who were in the party flocked to the Republican Party? *Sigh* I guess this is a rhetorical question...that this misleading bit of revisionist history is posted in yet another place, is proof enough. This is why those laws will need to be in place for years to come, as long as honesty remains, for some, a rarely-possesed commodity.

George, were you in on the image of the two eyes over the black background? I always love to hear about the great republican Lincoln and the evil Southern dems. all somewhat true, but since 1965 the kkk has taken over the repubs and jerks like George Won't won't admit that the repub party is just a subdivision of the kkk (that Christian org)

    • Posted By: bjsassy @ 07/01/2009 2:16:32 PM

kimmel. Please give specific examples of how the KKK has taken over the Republican Party. Please do not generalize. Name a current representative, senator or governor that is a member of the Klan. I have asked this question of many ranters and they have never been able to come up with one name or even news item concerning a Republican being affiliated with the KKK.

So any black who supports shedding this legislation is a trader and any white person supporting it MUST hate blacks? You are right, racism is not dead. Obviously by the comments on here it is alive and well in many posters.

Those who equate racism of today with what went on in the 60's need to pick up a book, and look at what really happened back then. Blacks back then were hung for sitting in the wrong part of the bus, dating a white woman, drinking out of the wrong fountain, SITTING IN THE WRONG PART OF A CHURCH, or just because they were breathing in the wrong place. This was reinforced openly by the government, particularly in the southeastern states. The racism today, while still sickening, in nothing compared to that.

You are never going to rid the world of racism, these laws were not meant to do so. They were meant to make sure the government did not establish a systematic campaign to stop blacks from voting. They don't. Now they really push to make sure those who are gainfully employed, especially hourly workers, never get to vote with 3+ hour waiting times, and constantly shifting polling places. I was told by one voting board member, if I had voted in the primaries, I would know they moved my poll. So they openly discriminate against independent voters.

A yes, I have voted south of the Mason Dixon (FAR SOUTH of it) for more than 10 years. I have white and black friends who have come from all walks of life. I have heard from friend who have grown up in the ghetto, and escaped poverty, and lawlessness in some of this countries shameful poor communities.

While having Obama in office does not suddenly bring out rainbows and pixie dust and make the nation a wonderful symbol or perfect harmony, it is a symbol of how far this nation has come and how we no longer need these laws left over from a horrific chapter in this nations history.

    • Posted By: bighappy @ 06/28/2009 8:43:42 PM

Did you eber asked your black friends which party was in power on the South in 1960s and actively propagated and defended racism there. I wold not be surprized if they would answer it was GOP, and Linkoln was a Democrat.

  • Posted By: DBVictory @ 06/28/2009 7:12:36 AM

Obviously Will has never voted south of the Mason Dixon line.

  • Posted By: maxbyte @ 06/27/2009 10:52:02 PM

Clarence Thomas is pathologically disconnected from reality. George Will is still dealing from the bottom of the deck.

George Will does not build an ipso facto argument that the Voting Rights Act is "a burden that has lost its rationale". Can Will, or anyone else seriously believe the Voting Rights Act is no longer necessary simply because Barrack Obama is now President? How completely irrational!

  • Posted By: FreeDem @ 06/27/2009 3:33:49 PM

As Usual Mr Will thinks in generalities and has no empathy for the specific, That is we can elect a president with African ancestry then all structures and minds that are still racist must have already evaporated.Alito & Scalia have already demonstrated a willingness to toss the country under the bus so save their agenda. This sop to anti-racists will not harm their agenda near as much as if they had voted with Thomas.

Sounds like The Court did just the right thing. Congress addresses the issue on a regular basis. When they think the inhabitants of those regions have learned to behave they can change it. Isn't it odd that Conservatives have no problem locking people up with no recourse, or taking away the legal rights of sex offenders forever, or numerous other "once guilty never trusted" laws but here, where this review and adjustment available, they're incensed.

Which side is George Will on?
