    Collaborators are just collaborators no matter how you try to twist the facts. Ultimately the Americans have to sacrifice their own rights and comforts in order to accomodate more immigrants. Those from Iraq and Afghanistan are just the US way of paying them for their services as collaborators.

    Many US citizen have no jobs and many have lost their homes and have to stay in tents but those immigrants are being supported by the government. But since the Americans have given their support for Bush to spend a lot of money on the wrong wars and have endorsed Obama to continue the war in Afghanistan,they ( the Americans ) have no alternative but face the consequences of being neglected by the government.

    Those from Iraq and Afghanistan are all self-centred and will even be willing to collaborate with Russia to undermine the US security for their own self-interests.

    I'd just like to say to those reading these comments, in defense of my potentially great nation, the US: please do not take the bigoted, racist statements being made by the under- or uneducated in this country as some kind of generalization about how Americans actually are or feel. Clearly, both in this country and Iraq (as well as every other nation on this planet), there are people that have arrived at their opinions in an intelligent manner and there are those that are controlled by ignorance and negative emotions, likely inherited from years of bad parenting/childhoods and self inflicted idiocy.

    As far as I am concerned, if you have something good to offer this country, you are welcome to come, legally or otherwise. All I ask is that you respect the fact that there are people here, like myself, who welcome you. And there are many of us.

    The best of luck to any and all immigrants that come to this country in search of the American ideal. We must all keep in mind that the history of this country has been short, and although we'd like to say it is ours, the fact is that we are all immigrants.

    I would just like to thank the author for this interesting and relevant piece. I think many of us forget about the daily sacrifices being made in Iraq to help repair the damage done by our ex-leaders' bloodlust. I can't imagine having to choose between leaving my home, my family and my friends or risking all of our lives to stay. A beautifully written article!

    Whoa! They do not, thnk of America as their "homeland", adopted or otherwise. No middle-eastern person ever will.
    This article is bullshit. I take affront at the waves of people with filthy habits, and archaic beliefs, and ehtnic centrism.
    They take pride in their origins, just dont force it on us here. You want your "culture", go back where it came from.

    Whatever the Iraqis are escaping from, the amount of bigotry they're now experiencing must be a surprise to many. Their religion is regarded as vile and homicidal and they are embedded in a population that finds it hard to make racial distinctions about people from other parts of the world. America's Sikhs -- a religious group from India, with no serious links with Iraq or, indeed, Afghanistan -- faced years of being arrested on American streets because they wear turbans. Sikh turbans look nothing like Iraqi or Afghan ones, they're just ... turbans. Some patriotic law officers took evident delight on posing with a greyhaired Sikh captive bent with nose near knees by having his handcuffed wrists hoisted behind him.

    Good luck to these immigrants. As your story implies but doesn't state outright, the US military incursion made it impossible for millions of those nationals to live in peace in their own homeland any more, and the Bush administration was resolute in denying US residency to virtuall all such refugees -- including those who could produce official US government documents showing they had worked as interpreters, etc, for the American occupation force. Dreadful.

    I am glad to see that, despite the ignorant (and probably racist) nay-sayers, there are many others who agree with my point of view. I thank our warriors who have sacrificed so much for our nation, and who have been kind enough to share their thoughts with us here. In my mind, I see no difference between you and the Iraqi nationals who have fought and bled beside you, and have also put their lives on the line for a shared vision of a better future. In both nations, we are lucky enough to have men (and women) of indomitable spirit and courage who, instead of hiding from conflict and preserving their own lives, have stepped forward in service of their respective nations. Perhaps tsv0728 said it best, that in Honoring those who have sarificed so much (American and Iraqi) in defense of the ideals that our nation was founded on, ideals which are in fact not uniquely American but, rather, are a universal expression of human rights, we Honor America herself.
    Happy belated Independence Day to all!

    People from all over the world are waiting in line to get a visa and work in the USA. Why on earth should we grat those opportunities for people from Iraq?

    We have just released them from their dictator, build their country, infrastructure and legal and other institutions without them chipping in, despite the economic problems in the USA and their surplus.

    Now that they have their chance at freedom and a civil society- let them build it and fight for their rights and privileges like the rest of the world- in their own country.

    Why on earth are we to give them any preference over people from other countries that have shown more loyalty and less of a security threat to the USA?

    Asian, African and East European countries have enough poverty stricken people who deserve to come to America before any Middle Eastern citizen.
    For starters, they never belonged to a group that yelled "Death to America".

      Many of these Iraqis have fought more for this country than Americans have. Why not gove them the opportunity to live in a country they sacrificed to protect? It is a sad day when those who have not given their time away from their families, blood on the battlefield and everyday luxuries feel they have aright to judge those who have. And if you are wondering...this post is coming from an American who sacrified over 3 years in Iraq and protected Iraqi citizens.

    Well said chingotchcook. To honor the vision of our founding fathers is to honor the value of life and freedom. Even if the founders weren't able (or perhaps willing) to enforce their principles on all of America at the time, their words have remained true, and each new generation accepts the responsibility to do their best to make the application of those words true. How can we now help the Iraqi's who put their lives on the line for their country, in defense of the ideals our people and gov't espouse around the world. To protect these Iraqi's is to protect the ideas that created America, and doing so will give people around the world access to the same privileges we enjoy. That is the best thing America can do for the world.

    I served side by side with Iraqi Army and Police and saw many of them give their lives for their country. They are the best people you will ever meet. I am alive today because my Iraqi translators were watching out for me. They are a great addition to our country. It was wrong for us to invade Iraq and these people did not ask for their country to be destroyed. We have a moral obligation to rebuild the country, and the least we can do is give citizenship to a far number of them.

    How sad for these people. We're handing out to Mexicans that have done nothing for this country but bring it down, and yet we can't help the people that put themselves and their families in danger, to help our military? Wait a min., we don't take care of disabled military people when they come home either. Hmmmm, kind of makes you wonder, doesn't it? One thing for certain, our politicians are sitting pretty with their income. I'm 66 yrs. old and, what I've noticed through the yrs. is, the people that are truly deserve the help, don't get it. The ones that are simply too lazy to work, and know all the angles, have no trouble getting help, with some of them collecting 2 or 3 checks a mon. under different names. Doesn't make a whole of sense but, it's happening on a reg. basis, and our government does nothing to straighter it out.

    Anyone who would spill their blood in defense of our nation, and who would make sacrifices most of us would never dream of, are true Americans. Whether citizen or aspiring citizen, whether born in Babylon or Beijing or Tijuana, these are the people that make our nation strong and give us hope for our shared future. As an American, I believe that human rights and natural laws as set forth in our Declaration of Independence apply to all people in all corners of the world, not just to citizens of the U.S. "We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness." These words bring tears to my eyes and pride to my heart. We should Honor anyone who would sacrifice themselves in defense of these ideals, no matter where the sacrifice occurs or what country they call home.
